Question for SEC fans...

Question for SEC fans...

And it has to do with your favorite topic... oversigning.

As I look at the Scout recruiting rankings I see both A&M and Georgia have 30+ verbals.  I know they are just verbals but how many will they actually be able to sign?  Not sure when the SEC oversigning rules go into effect and what loopholes are available.

BTW, I didn't start this thread to get into an oversigning debate (because we will never agree), I am just trying to get an answer to my specific question.

Thanks.

RE: Question for SEC fans...

Georgia doesn't over sign. Only 69 scholarships at SEC championship. Depth largely responsible for Bama running over us in the 3rd and 4th quarter.

I believe a few will be early enrollees and not count towards this years number.

Good info can be found at www.oversigning.com

Ask all the Alabama trolls what they think.

So unless they non-commit Georgia will be able to keep all 30?

Re: Question for SEC fans...

rose right now uga has 69 scholarshiped players on the roster.redface

between a few players getting into trouble and getting the boot, a few having to take medical redshirts and a couple just quitting we are in worse shape than if we had been put on probation from a numbers standpoint.

last year we had 7 players at signing day that we were waiting on that ended up signing with other schools--including 4 that had told our staff they were signing with us.

long story short we will be able to sign between 32-36 JUST to get to 85.

between being 16 short right now, add the seniors and then a possible 3 juniors that may leave early.

we can take 11 early enrollees and then sign our 25 for this season.

i would have to look at the roster for individual info but we wont go over the 85.

have no clue on a&ms roster status.

Wow, only 69?? Amazing you guys were able to have the season you did. Does you praise Mark Richt for being 1 play away from a NC and having a good season? Or do you condemn him for having only 69 players on scholarship. That's pretty bad.

Bama fans are quick to respond on most threads. Very hesitant on these. Saban won't discuss it either.

RE: Question for SEC fans...

Georgia's last 4 classes have been 19,26,19,20 (according to this site). Thats 84 signees over a 4 year period. Given natural attrition, being 5-10 guys under seems about right.

Since they had 19 last year, they can backlog at least 6 commits this year. Unless they go up to 35+ before NLOID, I don't see this as an issue.

Re: Question for SEC fans...

I believe Georgia can take as many as 11 early enrollees (count against 2012 class) as well as a normal signing day class of 25 (all of these count against 2013 max of 25).

They already have 6 JUCO transfers and 5th year post-grads (military school) in their 34 commits - so I assume they are counting on at least 3 other kids graduating from high school in December and being enrolled in class in Athens on Jan. 7, 2013.  This would leave 25 to sign a 2013 LOI and graduate next spring.  Of course there may be 1 or 2 who they are concerned might not make grades and will go the JUCO or 5th year post-high school route - those commits won't count until they return and enroll at UGA.

Re: Question for SEC fans...

Alabama does not oversign.  The reason why it looks that way is Bama has players who signed in previous years, included in the list.  Alabama also gives athletes medical leaves if they are caught with drugs or other items.  This prevents the student from getting a bad reputation while trying to fix his or her problem.  Othe schools do it more in the open, but they are trying to help the student as well.  If the student can not fix it, then they are gone.  Several Alabama players have had this happen, and transferred to other lesser schools (FCS, JC, etc.)

Alabama has as many scholarship players on their roster as any other college team.  Everything else that you say is an excuse for losing to Alabama and the SEC.

Re: Question for SEC fans...

My question had nothing to do with Alabama.

I just wanted to know if those team will really be able to sign 30 and 33 players this year.  I got my answer on Georgia.  Anyone know anything about A&M?

I realize that, but because Coach Saban protects his players from the media, the actual number of scholarship players Bama has on the squad is not known.  I do know this, Bama has less than 85.

Other schools may do the same thing for their players.

It is the universities job to protect their students...... or doesn't OSU have a
health clinic/ hospital on campus?

Student, meaning actually has to study,

edit: to add smiley sunglassescool

maybe I should be more sensitive, these athletes bring a lot of dollars and excitement.  I guess I'm  lamenting about how academics takes a back seat, which is true of most schools, not just Alabama.

I think one of the issues with Bama is that there have been reports that medical leaves weren't just for students with drug/alchohol issues, but were also used to keep underperforming athletes from counting against the scholarship totals.  I don't know if those  reports are true or not, but I think that's part of the reason some people might question Bama's scholarship numbers.

RE: Question for SEC fans...

According to my understanding of the SEC's so called new 25 man limit, teams can only oversign by 25 if they're back counting scholarships from last year. Considering Georgia signed 19 plays last year, it seems like the limit this year would be 31 regardless of how many players you have on scholarship. I'd be curious to where this 36 number came about.

RE: Question for SEC fans...

narfa we had 17 guys get in last year and 2--john atkins and leonard floyd have to go to prep school. both of them are in this years class.

of the 17 that got in we had i think 6 or 7 that were able to be counted back to 2011.

we actually could count i think 14??? was the number mentioned towards last year.

its the 85 limit that is going to get us this year and not the per year.

i love coach richt but we have done a poor job on roster management.redface
