Has anybody confirmed if he signed his LOI yet?

I can confirm he hasn't because the LOI period for the spring has passed, so he'll be official once he enrolls in classes.

I watched Mostella play for 2 years at Austin High School. Kid can jump out of the gym.....a freak of nature. He needs coaching, not sure he surrounded himself with people that would push him to do better.....more like people to manage his life. If Dixon can push this kid his upside is unlimited. He needs to get to practice and realize he will not be the best player on the court any longer without hard work.......

Hopefully his attitude is a bit better than that.  If not, he might be on the same path as a big kid who was here for 1/2 of a season.

RE: DETRICK MOSTELLA

Birch was being recruited by a coach in NE (Skerry?) who was at Providence at the time and when Dixon hired him as an assistant coach he brought Birch with him. Then the assistant went and got a head coach job even before Birch got here, and with that Birch still came here, in fact a year earlier than was planned.

In other words, Birch was NEVER really a PITT player. He was not recruited by Dixon or the other coaches that had been here, was not sold on them or the program, and so when he left it should not have come as a surprise and I am sure Dixon and the program learned from that experience.

On the other hand, Mostella was planning on going to Oki State, but then they had a couple of players that were expected to turn pro not turn pro, and so Mostella backed off and they let him go as they didn't have the scholly and had to let SOMEONE go... and Mostella then said it was his family that really made the decision on OSU.

Then he came here and met the coaches and saw the facilities and then met the players at Greentree and was himself SOLD on coming here. Felt really at home.

Mostella is highly ranked coming out of HS, but if you come to a top program you have gotta realize you are gonna have competition for PT. He is a 'verbal' commit right now (past the time where you can sign a LOI) and won't be in the program officially until he registers for class come September or so.

So, there is a chance he could change his mind before that but I doubt that is gonna happen. Seems like a good fit for both Mostella and the program.

Yeah, right now we need a player at SG that can score. The only other possibilities are Durand Johnson, where there is a question as to whether he is better at SG or SF, Josh Newkirk, who seems better at PG, and Chris Jones, who is a wing player like Johnson and has not really broken out yet.

So, IMO a good fit for Detrick as well as ourselves.

Yeah, with Newkirk and Mostella, we got two players from the south coming in and that would probably not have happened except for the fact that, we are now in the ACC.

Re: DETRICK MOSTELLA

Mostella is still not listed as enrolled in the online Pitt directory, so until that happens I guess anything can happen.  Its a little strange because other incoming freshman who are starting in August are listed in there (and I'm not just talking about athletes, I know people starting in August and they're in there already).  That said, I think its unlikely that he'd change his mind at this point as it would be a scramble to find another school with open slots.

Birch was a "different" kind of recruit and the type that Dixon probably wouldn't have pursued if not for Skerry.  There were red flags with Birch left and right.  I don't see any of the same red flags with Mostella.  If he has a lot of handlers, hopefully they have his best interest in mind, not just an NBA paycheck.  Mostella just needs to come in with the right attitude and take advantage of the opportunities he'll get.  The door for early playing time is wide open.

Re: DETRICK MOSTELLA

Knocking around checking the kid out when it hit the press about him and Pitt, there seemed to be some thought that his father, who I think played semi-pro or something, was the one who was the gremlin with the kid.

Re: DETRICK MOSTELLA

I would think that DM is not enrolled simply because he committed to Pitt AFTER classes began in June.

Its possible.  I know he committed on July 2, so if he couldn't start by the July 8 final summer session he would have had to wait until August.  That said, August enrollees are listed in the directory and he isn't.  Regardless, I'm not reading too much into it.

He's probably enrolling initially for the fall semester which starts Monday, August 26.  So, we should know for sure shortly after that date.

Re: DETRICK MOSTELLA

One of the sports writers covering pitt hoops reportedly tweeted yesterday that Mostella will be at Pitt for classes either Monday or Tuesday.  Saw that on some other board or blog--can't remember which at the moment.  Should know for certain this week.

Since he committed after the close of the LOI period the coaches cannot make an official announcement show him on the roster online, etc. until he is actually in school taking classes.

Yeah, it sounds like this one might come down to the wire.  Students have until September 6 to enroll, so we may be waiting another two weeks to know for sure.

Its clear that he wants to be at Pitt based on his Twitter account, but these NCAA processes can drag on and on.  Until that happens, its a waiting game.  Worst case, hopefully we can get him into a Pitt-friendly JUCO if he's not cleared by September 6.

Re: DETRICK MOSTELLA

You could be correct that there is a clearinghouse issue, I suppose.  However, there has been no indications that such is causing any delay.  Monday is the first day of classes at Pitt and someone on TOS stated that the delay is due to some family matter so I don't think there  is a clearinghouse issue invloved.

It almost has to be a clearinghouse issue at this point.  There's really no other explanation for not being able to enroll.  I haven't heard anything about it being a family issue, and its unlikely a family issue would stop him from enrolling.

If September 6 comes and goes and its a small academic thing, then its possible he could get eligible by next semester and be able to play in any games after the spring term starts on January 6.

Re: DETRICK MOSTELLA

There was a tweet referenced somewhere that he expects to be here either Monday or Tuesday... that a family issue had delayed him coming up here. If he's not here he can't really register.

Re: DETRICK MOSTELLA

You can register without setting foot on campus. If he was able to do so, he'd be registered.

Check Twitter now. A writer on TOS received a text from Mostella himself saying he's on campus now
To hell with Georgia

And now he's saying that he's not able to confirm the text was actually from Mostella.  Mostella Watch rolls on.

We might need to implement a smoke system on the Cathedral, Vatican-style.  White if/when Mostella arrives, black if he does not. cool

Did the smoke come out of the Vatican yet? Is Mostella with us?
