Phil Steele picks Dwags as National Champ sleeper

Phil Steele picks Dwags as National Champ sleeper

I was listening to 680 on the way to work this morning, and they had Phil Steele on. Last year, he picked FSU as the sleeper outside of the top 10 that had the best chance to win the national title. This year, he has picked the cesspool.

He cited the lack of qb presence in the SEC and particularly the East as a primary factor in his decision. I could have misheard, but I believe he said that Hudson Mason was one of the most experienced qbs in the division. Obviously, the dawgs have a lot of talent, but they do almost every year.

For some reason, I just can't picture UGA making a run. There are two things that have been almost certainties the past decade for UGA: they'll beat tech, and they'll choke away a national title appearance.

What say you 5; think the pups can make a run this year?

Depends on whether returning 10 starters from a bad defense = a good defense.  They could easily start 0-2.  They'll be underdogs in Columbia.  FWIW, Dylan Thompson has more and higher quality experience IMO.

If they get through the first 2 games with only 1 loss, or zero losses, the schedule is actually not too bad.  Depends on if Florida or Tennessee turn into good teams.  Otherwise they've really only got Missouri (who I think will fall off quite a bit) and Auburn.  Auburn is at home.

They've still got the SEC title game but obviously if they win the SEC with 1 loss or 0 losses, they'll be in the 4 team playoff.  Maybe even with 2 losses as the SEC champ.

I think they lose 2 or 3 personally.  Not convinced the defense will be much better, and the O-Line has question marks.  Mason will be pretty good, but he isn't Aaron Murray.  They are loaded at RB and WR but that isn't where you win football games.  Certainly not national titles.

Mason's parents actually live in my neighborhood. I could definitely see it honestly, especially with the playoffs in place. Todd Grantham held them back for a handful of seasons. Pruitt should make the D much better and the Gurley factor alone makes them extremely dangerous.

I guess it is possible but I just can't see them beating whoever wins the west division in a conference title game.

Sadly, I think this is the "year" for them. Solid QB. All-American back. Always another guy waiting in the wings at WR. And Richt finally did what he needed to do, which is go out and hire a mercenary DC.

It could be a loooooooong offseason for Tech fans.

EDIT: Can we move this to the water cooler?  It kills me to see this on a Tech football message board?  At least it's a little more hidden on the wc.

I pick the dwags to go 7-5 this year.  Losses to Clemson, USCe, Mizzou, Auburn, and GT.

Never say never, but I think they are assuming too much out of a new starter at QB. Aside from Shockley, they have been very average with a first year starter at QB including Stafford and Murray. Mason didn't get the playing time that Shockley got. Plus, as we have seen, you can make strides with a first year coordinator, but I don't think you can become Bama overnight...and that assumes Pruett has that in him. COuld they? Sure. But I do think they lose two or three.

I pick Georgia Tech as my National Championship sleeper.

Doesn't my opinion count as much as Mr. Steele's? wink

I don't know what to make of Pruitt.  He has exactly 1 year as a DC and that was with FSU, where he out-talented everybody he played by a wide margin.  Except Auburn and maybe Clemson.  FSU's defensive numbers were pretty good against Auburn but they also had 5 weeks to prepare, which always helps the D more IMO.

I'm not sure he is upgrade over Grantham.  We'll see.  He is just unproven IMO.

Yep, that is the big question.  Young QB is the other.

Are you sure they return 10 starters on defense?  I thought more than that left the program and they are talking about starting a lot of young guys in the Defensive backfield.

Re: Phil Steele picks Dwags as National Champ sleeper

Y'all have been reading too much of the paper.......

QB....tell me again what he has done.  Started two games and should have lost both of them against teams thaey should have beaten easily (Unfortunately)

RB - Gurley will be a beast if if can stay healthly.....but he never has.  Marshall still recovering from ACL.

FB - lost their starter for the year a week or so ago.

TE - nothing there but inexperience

WR - Mitchell still hurt....

OL - Could be OK

So I don't look for the offense to put up a lot of points this year as opposed to last.

Defense - yes Grantham is gone but so is the defensive backfield.

And you must remember....when have the dwags finished better than projected.  Just like UNC-CHeat in that regard.  They always lose a game that today you would say no way that happens.  This year it could be at Arkansas which is between the Mizzou and FLA games

I'm not sure.  I saw that in one of my preseason magazines but I haven't read/studied as much this year as I usually would have.  I could be misquoting.

Stafford and Murray started early in their career. Mason, like Shockley, has been a backup for a while now learning the system.

Re: Phil Steele picks Dwags as National Champ sleeper

All Mason has to do is not **** up. He just needs to be Tee Martin.

Where Georgie might stumble is in offensive play-calling. I can't count the number of times I've seen them run all over a team for 2 or 3 quarters and then lose because they inexplicably got away from what was working and turned to the passing game. I don't know if it's Richt's passing background or Bobo is just a moron at times, but it's something you can count on. The problem is, they still often win despite making it more difficult for themselves.

I've been saying they are two things away from a run of titles. One is a top-notch DC. They have that. The other is a top-notch OC. They THINK they have that, but they really don't. The best thing that could happen to Georgie is Bobo taking a promotion. It's ridiculous how much talent they have. I used to think Georgie fans were nuts to want Richt gone, but they are right. They have seriously underachieved with him (of course, I'd take their "underachievement" any day of the week). They really have no excuse for not having a title at this point. And they should be embarrassed if we ever make it close in November.

Champ Sleeper-  They can have that award if they want it.  But I think I can sleep as well as anyone else.

Re: Phil Steele picks Dwags as National Champ sleeper

Reminds me a of joke that seems to circulate every year at about this time:

Boy: Dad, how many national championships have the dwags won
Father:  Well, son the answer is 3.  They won in 1942, 1980, and the one they'll win this year.

Usually, by the middle of September, you can't tell this joke.
