Second Team?

Second Team?

I think we've done this before but I want to see who you 5 would choose as a second team to follow and root for if GT was out of the picture.

To help limit it, choose one from the Power 5 so we're looking at teams that have at least a chance at a playoff spot and aren't rooting for small or directional schools that some may have attended.

Mine: Texas, Hook 'Em Horns!

Oregon

I like the fact that they buck the norm with regards to play calling and fashion.

Auburn, because they're not Bama. You have to choose sides over here. It's a state law or something.confused

Re: Second Team?

I typically cheer for UF as my 2nd team.  They hate Georgia, Florida State and Miami, and we never play them.  My brother went to UF and I work with a bunch of UF Architects, so it feels like a somewhat natural alliance.  (Plus the UF fans have had a nice reality check the last few years to bring that ego down a few notches).

Re: Second Team?

For over 35 years, it's been GT #1 and Penn State #2 for me. My allegiance to the Lions has been severely tested over the last few years. This season under Franklin, (not my first choice, btw) will be a "make or break" year as far as my future interest goes.

Otherwise, if NOT the Jackets, then another ACC team

Re: Second Team?

I would say Auburn because of the vast # of family who hold allegiance there, and I find them not so offensive.

However, an interesting dynamic has arisen in my household - I'm a Tech fan, my wife Auburn. My daughters have decided to align themselves with Tech. While I have given them permission to root for both (so long as the 2 do not play each other), they adamantly refuse. It is now to the point where they will intentionally point out their disdain for Auburn and their love of Tech just to watch my wife seethe. It has created a little internal rivalry where none really existed. They will point out passing cars with Tech stickers/tags, always say how they want to go to Tech someday, "boo" anytime they see an Auburn logo...its like they were meant to be born in the 50s/60s...

I used to be the same way. One of my best friends from Tech was a huge Florida fan because both his parents went there and he grew up near Gainesville, so I started rooting for Florida mostly because of him, and because UGA hates them.
But over the years I've gotten to know a lot of Florida fans and started seeing how obnoxious they are as a fan base. The last straw came when I married into a predominantly Florida grad family (thankfully, SWMBO did not go there). After experiencing them, I just can't bring myself to root for Florida much anymore. There fans are pretty much on par with UGA.

I don't really have a true #2 anymore. It's really just whoever is playing UGA, and I generally root for ACC teams, although I have a hard time rooting for Miami and VPI.

Pretty much this.

Whomever is playing Ugag is the main #2 team.

Always root for ACC against any OOC opponent, even VPI and Miami.

Then root for whatever helps GT's ACC Championship chances during conference games - which generally means rooting for Atlantic division teams and the Coastal underdog.

LOL last year it was like "Yeah go Duke! I mean, hold up Duke, chill out. WHOA DUKE WHOA, CALM DOWN. Ugh, nevermind."

Ole Miss but this goes waaaaay back to when Jake Gibbs,Doug Elmore,Glynn Griffing,Perry Lee Dunn, Jim Weatherly( who by the way is the only SEC qb to pen a #1 pop hit), Stan Hindman(will never forget him chasing down Joe La Bruzzo? of LSU on Nat'l tv), Jim Dunaway & all that bunch.
I always pull for the service academies, Wake Forest & Mississippi State,Rice,Baylor,Tulane too.

UF fans here in central Florida are as bad as Dwag fans in Georgia. I used to root for UF, but not after having to deal with these folks here. I don't really have a #2 team, except for UGA's opponent.

Arizona State since I got my MBA there and in live here. Since I also have a place in Missouri i do like the Tigers but my loyalty isnt strong. Since I married into it, I also follow Kansas State because my inlaws and BIL go to school there and seem to wind up in Mahattan KS once or twice a year.

Tie between Auburn and Clemson.  Two pretty decent Southern engineering schools, both with scumbag rivals (like us).

Re: Second Team?

Of course whoever is playing Georgia

After that a tie between FSU and Miami. I grew up in South Florida, so I must be a thug according to many of you, and my brothers and close friends went to FSU.

Edit- If they meet head to head I root for FSU

Georgia State.

I sometimes feel guilty for not supporting my alma mater more, but this Tech habit is hard to shake.  I'm the exact type of fan that GSU so desperately needs.

I like to see Clemson, the service academies, and BYU do well too....when they are not playing Tech obviously.

For the Scion of the Southland since 1997

GIVE 'EM HELL TECH
