Hendrix' "All Along the Watchtower" was the first one that popped into my head.

Nina Simone - Here Comes the Sun - Beatles

I've always liked the Earth Wind and Fire version of Got To Get You Into My Life.  Easily the best cover of a Beatles song, in my opinion.

years ago I remember one of the Beatles (Paul?) commenting that Joe Cocker's version of "With a Little Help from my Friends" was superior to their own.

other great covers I like...

"When the Levee breaks" a Led Zeppelin cover of a Memphis Minnie song
"Statesboro Blues" a cover of a Blind Willie McTell song by the Allman Brothers
"Close up the Honky Tonks" ...Dwight Yoakum covers a Buck Owens song
"Comfortably Numb"...Dar Williams version of the Pink Floyd tune
"Gold Dust Woman" by Grace Potter/Warren Haynes of the old Fleetwood Mac song
"All My Tears"...Emmylou covers a great Julie Miller song
"Cry Me a River"...Joe Cocker (again) of an old Ella Fitzgerald tune

so many more will come to me later. I really like to hear cover versions of great songs.

"Smells Like Teen Spirit" (Nirvana) and "Dream On" (Aerosmith) by Tori Amos. Check these out.

I didn't know this was a cover until I ran across in on one of these list but it is a great song:

Janis Joplin - Me & Bobby McGee - YouTube

Re: Favorite Cover Songs

Landslide - Smashing Pumpkins  -- the original is one of the few Fleetwood Mac songs I actually like, but the Smashing Pumpkins' version is better in my humble opinion
Little Wing - Stevie Ray Vaughan -- it is nearly impossible to improve on Jimi Hendrix, but Vaughan's version takes out the lyrics and becomes essentially an extended solo; it is really just nasty
"Time wounds all heels." -- John Lennon

I don't know how I managed to leave Little Wing by Derek and the Dominos off of my list.  Easily one of my top 5 favorite songs, period.

"Downtown Train" (Tom Waites) by Everything but the Girl or Mary Chapin Carpenter are really good. The original is great as well.

Both Bonnie Raitt and Susan Tedeschi do a good job on the John Prine classic "Angel From Montgomery".

Lyle Lovett and Al Green do a duet of the old Willie Nelson "Ain't It Funny How Time Slips Away" that IS better than the original.

This may seem strange, but I love this cover because it is such a departure from the original.

Re: Favorite Cover Songs

Ehhh, The Jimi AND SRV versions are both better.  Eric Clapton pollutes everything....now if it was just (or mostly) Duane.....that'd be a different story.  Too bad Eric Calpton had to kill all those guys.....
