Denied admission at GT??

Denied admission at GT??

Wow...

A student assistant in my department just got denied for undergraduate admission at GT.

She has what I would consider to be perfect credentials - very good GPA, very good SAT, very active with the FIRST Robotics League, builds circuits for fun, worked last year at GTRI, wants to be an electrical engineer and has the acumen and drive to succeed at it.  Very strong and driven young lady.  I was encouraging her to apply to GT rather than SPSU and had every faith that she'd be a shoe-in.

I don't get it. eek disbelief

Re: Denied admission at GT??

I've had this discussion with several folks.

GT is missing on too many fine candidates because the school is too small.

There are many more students applying now than can be admitted.

Best advice is to attend a local school, ace all the classes, then apply for a transfer in future semseter.

Junior college and then transfer in. That was the route I took, by choice, due to expenses.

I'm sure UGA will welcome her with open arms.

That's basically what she's been doing, getting her non-core classes out of the way at KSU.  To date, she's the only young adult I've ever met who actually took the advice of "get your other classes out of the way someplace easier, then transfer into Tech".

She's an in-state student, so maybe there's that angle.  I've heard that they're giving preference to out-of-state, though I don't know how valid that is.

She's apparently been told to submit for some sort of re-consideration of her application.  Not sure what the details are regarding that or how likely that is to succeed.

She even wears white and gold frownredface

  1) Define good SAT.

  2) Define good GPA.

  3)  What are these non core classes ?   I would think she should be taking Math / Physics / Chemistry, and posting good grades.

Did you send a letter of recommendation?

Re: Denied admission at GT??

Any young person I meet today who asks for advice to get into Tech, I tell them they need to be a leader in something and have demonstrable effect on the organization.  I would add to that, if anyone is dead set on it; download the application now and see what is being asked for.

My recipe:
Good grades
High SAT score
Job (no baby sitting)
International travel (something more than beaches)
Athletics
Extracurricular academics

At this point, I would advise your student assistant to make an appointment and go meet with the admissions office to see what can be done.  A point of emphasis in that face to face meeting is to speak to how a GT degree will drive success in the work place.  As Tech alums we may not realize how distinctive we are in this long range point of view - many schools are focused on the student being at the school.  Tech is focused on the student being a productive (and giving back to Tech) member of the community.

Good luck to your student assistant.

That's weird. I know a girl currently in EE at GT who transferred in from Georgia Perimeter. She's Asian though, so maybe that helped?

Tell your assistant to sit tight and wait for the merger...?

Maybe, maybe not.  Admissions is weird, and not every school takes the highest marks, especially when they're going for "diversity".  The "all 50 states" thing is even big; I promise you if it came down to 2 qualified candidates, and one was from Georgia and had better metrics and the other was from Wyoming and the school wanted to check that box to get all 50, the student from Wyoming would get in over the Georgia student.  Every time.

Also, what county is she from? Good grades and GPA probably aren't good enough for Cobb County due to the competition and county quota (I beleive this is in effect).

SWBOIT graduated from Pope a year ago. Toptwo students were heading to Tech with ridiculous GPAs like 4.5 or something. Don't know the SAT but I am sure it was high as well.

Re: Denied admission at GT??

Without disclosing her exact numbers, her GPA was in the high 3s and her SAT was over a 2100.  No sports teams that I'm aware of, more of an intramural kind of gal.  She didn't ask me for a letter of recommendation (she had some much more high profile names to ask for recommendations) but I'm offering her again to write one.  I also know a couple faculty in the EE department I can talk to, for whatever that's worth.

I'm sure she'll be successful with a SPSU/KSU/VPISU/UGAg degree or wherever she ends up getting one from, but she was really hoping for GT.  I'd even talked her into attending football games!

Maybe her appeals process or whatever it's called will provide some good results.  It just blows me away that such a strong candidate for a core engineering program would get turned down.  Makes me wonder if I'd get admitted to today's GT.

Good point, I think she's from Cobb.  SWMBO and I are in Cobb now, and I'm trying to convince her we should move elsewhere when we have kids.

I hate to say it, but a high 3s GPA is nothing special these days given how many kids are over a 4.0. Probably average to a bit below average for GT depending on the exact numbers.  Average Math + Verbal SAT was 1420 last year, so 2100 total is probably around average as well.  While I'd still expect someone with average numbers to be more than likely to get in, they wouldn't be a shoe-in.

Also, does she have a lot of AP/IB coursework?  I think the average admit takes around 7 to 8 of them in high school.  It is really cutthroat now.

Which just reinforces my suspicion that if I tried applying to GT today with the numbers I had back in the 90s (high 3s GPA, 14something SAT, Eagle Scout, no sports), I'd likely get turned down as well.

Sheesh.  Can't admissions fast forward to a year from now, after the ones they let in looked to the left, looked to the right, and only one of them is still there after a year?  Surely one of those two (future) empty spots can be given to this young lady tongue

She must not have been able to help the diversity numbers.
