Best win in 25 years.

Best win in 25 years.

The post about beating 'Bama in '81 got me thinking about what I would consider the best win (not the most emotionally satisfying) in the last generation. I'm not really talking about (or excluding) wins over Georgia, but the times we've beaten the best teams when both of us had something to play for. I can go back to Dodd's glory days, but since a lot of folks can't, I think maybe the ACC Championship win over Clemson and C. J. Spiller. What say ya'll?

Only five more weeks?

If we're talking football, hard pressed for me to ever find one better than the '90 win in Paris.

If we're talking GT sports overall, I don't think I've still stopped smiling almost 30 years later when we beat UNC to win our first ACC title at the Omni.

UNC win was more than 25 years, but the UVA football win qualifies and is timeless....

I think UVA is the only win over a #1 team in that time frame.

It has to be the one.
Ingredients:  1 oz. perception; 1 lb. obscure.

'90 win over UVA brought attention to Tech not seen in, what, 40 years? This is the clear winner.

VPI '09 was awesome. I was there in person, and it was one of the best experiences of my life. The ACCCG vs Clemson was really cool too. It really is hard to pass up the Georgia game in 2008. It was the only time I've ever seen us beat them. Besides that, it was a great game.

+1.  Miami in 2005 was a huge upset as well, but not like  UVA.

I believe we beat a highly overrated team in UVA, but Miami was a very solid team, if I remember correctly.  Strange that they were both road games.

That Miami road win was a big one IMHO...along with the two wins over Auburn.

This should not even be a question... The Sting at UVa 1990, which was their homecoming no less during the best season in their history.  If not for that, Nebraska would not have happened later.  As a student in the late 70s, seeing Tech as a national power at all, much less winning a National Championship in my lifetime, was laughable.  Sisson't kick was a bolt of lightning and every Tech fan knows exactly where they were when he made it and we won.  It still seems like a dream, not reality.

Beating Bama in the 81 opener was nice but it led to nothing but a 1-10 season.  The '90 UVa game has to be one of the most significant wins in all of Tech history, not just the past 25 years.

You are entitled to your opinion.  I am saying that I had rather beat an outstanding program in their worst year than to beat the French in their best year.  And this is only my opinion.  Would you rather beat Duke in their best year or Alabama in their worst year?

Correct.  Thanks.  Sorry about that.  I will change it then to Will Bynum's make at the end in the Final 4 over Okie State (and that tool Eddie Sutton) to get us to the title game.

Nebraska 1990 in Citrus Bowl(45-21).  That gave us a national title.

Easy. Down 14 on the road in Charlottesville at the half...came back to win and then IN THE POSITION to even play for a national title.

Basketball - has to be the Final 4 win vs Oklahoma State.

Re: Best win in 25 years.

The win over UVA in 1990. I was living in Bartlesville, OK and had several Tech grads and wives over to my house to watch the game. Everybody thought I was crazy at halftime when I pronounced that Tech was 'getting on top of UVA" and would win the game.

Best win that I saw in person was the Jasper Sanks fumble game. SHMBO missed the ending because she couldn't watch and left with about 2 minutes to go. When I met her outside the stadium after the game she pronounced that Tech won. I asked her how she knew. She pointed out a trashcan with a big dent in its side and she "the dent is where a guy in a UGA sweatshirt kicked it!".
