GT - UVa Post-Game Thread
I didn't have high hopes for this one and that's certainly what happened. But, I am very disappointed at how the game got away in the second half. It was 43-37 at one point in the second half and then UVa just beat the crap out of us after that - went on something like a 39-17 run to close out the game. That was just plain ugly.
No venting and you are ALWAYS expected to follow the rules of this site.

No excuse to lose by 28 points to this Virginia team. It's beyond time to get Solomon Poole more minutes, and let him get more experience on the court. This season is all but over anyways.

Until we learn to protect the ball, we are going to continue to get hammered on the road unfortunately. It is what it is.

Re: GT - UVa Post-Game Thread
Pattern very similar to UNC game: competitive into the early minutes of the second half and then a complete collapse in which the opponent got to the rim entirely too easy. Think UVA outscored GT in the paint something like 44-22.
Ugh.

I still think 90% of this mess is due to Hewitt, but I would like to see some improvement. I am just not crazy about our style of play on offense, or for that matter, defense. We play an awful lot like we played under Hewitt.
A lot of times when I see the ball go in to our big men, I think of Stanley on "The Office". You would have had to see the show to understand.

Re: GT - UVa Post-Game Thread
I think that was the most one sided game I have seen called for fouls. The ESPN folks never even mentioned that most of our team was in foul trouble from the middle of the 1st half. They never even showed the foul totals. UVA was in the bonus from the middle of the first half. I don't think we had but two free throws in the first half. Coach showed assume restraint at some of the fouls.

Re: GT - UVa Post-Game Thread
Obviously very disappointing and frustrating. But in the last several games this team is falling apart when they should be getting a little better. Not sure if we're getting that much worse or the other ACC teams are getting it all together as teams do at the end of the season.
The offense is non-existent. There is way too much dribbling and not enough passing. We run the same set up every time and it's not working. I believe we have players that, if given half a chance, could score more points. CBG has that two-more-year credibility extension, but I'm not feeling much confidence at this point. Even the defense that has worked so well is falling apart.
The players don't seem to be enjoying themselves...just frustrated.

Wasn't expecting to win this game, but that was a lot worse than I expected. Still say we ga 3-1 in the last 4 though.

RE: GT - UVa Post-Game Thread
We are not very quick either physically or mentally and we are not agile, able to change direction, and the big guys don't finish at the rim well because no one has more than a 4" vertical. IMHO the game would have been closer if not for the gutless crew of homers calling the game. One ref in particular only seemed to watch one team and closed his eyes on the other. The ACC has a very low bar for FB & BB officials and I don't think this crew qulifies. Every year we hope the ACC will improve their officials but they never do. What a joke.

One of the down sides to a young team is they don't tend to handle adversity well. They got to within 5, then UVA hits some shots, some calls go against GT and GT appeared to do a combination of panic with wild 3 pt shots and give up on defense. I truly expected GT to get some even up calls in the second half, but that never happened. I know that some coaches don't believe in taking a technical to make a statement, but the fouls on Holsey and Udofia when the UVA players were going over their backs would have been the time do to it. He definitely should have when Udofia got his T. Sometimes a quiet note to the league office just isn't the way to handle things.

Re: GT - UVa Post-Game Thread
I'm concerned less than we lost than that we aren't improving. I wanted to get the feeling things were moving in the right direction as the season wore on. 4 more games - I sure hope we can win two of them, and look decent in the games we don't win. We need good point guard play so badly....
Who would have guessed after the 95/96 season we would have one winning conference regular season in the next 17 years?

Let's blame Paul Hewitt-maybe George Bush? Going 4 and 15, which is what this is likely to be, is inexcuseable.

Re: GT - UVa Post-Game Thread
UVa is a really, really scary program, IMHO. What ball-movement. What constant motion. What depth at every position. What a well-oiled machine. Even with Harris having a slow day, that was a very impressive overall team performance. From the look of his roster, Tony Bennett seems to be an excellent recruiter and from their performance at both ends, he seems to be an excellent instructor and game manager. Let's hope CBG turns our program around in the same fashion and performs as well as our Head Coach.
Go Jackets!!

Subconsciously, I knew this. But it's much more depressing when read in print. I knew our record wasn't going to be outstanding this year, but I'm concerned that we're regressing. We have a good mixture of young talent and veterans and should not be collapsing like we are with the sloppy turnovers and ole defense. It's almost March...we should be playing our best ball of the season. We're not.
"It's a great day for me, John. I found out my son's gonna have another little boy. It's just great. It's the greatest win I've ever had. Our kids just fought and hung in there. They wouldn't quit. We told 'em we thought we could win at halftime, and we did it." -B. Ross, 11/3/90

Re: GT - UVa Post-Game Thread
There's really no excuse allowing Virginia to score 82 points when they average 64 points per game. And we have no answer to the mugging, collapse defense every team throws at us. We beat them at home, so we should be better than this.
The past couple of games we seemed to have regressed, along with the development of several players. I think the coaches have to design more plays for Bolden. He only took 3 shots in this game while playing 32 minutes. We can't afford to have our scoring guard not try to score. Keep running him through picks until he can free himself. He's our best chance for an outside threat.

Re: GT - UVa Post-Game Thread
I think one of the biggest problems for this team is that we are a very easy team to defend. Nobody really has the ability to put the ball on the floor and get to the basket. Poole shows flashes, but he's still learning. We have 1 decent outside shooter, so teams can pack things in on us and we are going to have alot of trouble scoring. Most of guards our freshman and I expect in the off-season they will get bigger and stronger. Should we win only 4 or 5 games next year in the year in the ACC, then I'll also start to wonder about the direction of the program. 83bee wrote: There's really no excuse allowing Virginia to score 82 points when they average 64 points per game. Re: GT - UVa Post-Game Thread
I think it's funny that people try to blame refs for a 28 point loss. No way it had anything to do with the 8 assists and 16 turnovers. On the other end, Virginia has 15 assist and only 5 turnovers. Sloppy offense. If you're gonna play a slow paced game you have to be able to execute. Way too many wasted possessions.
