QB Competition Observation

QB Competition Observation

Reading through the long QB speculation thread from last week I noted the following post which triggered a thought.

From TechAMG:

Something also to look at , Lee was a 4 star QB out of high school. Thomas was NOT. He was only listed as a 4 star DB / WR because of his speed. He was unrated in the top 100 QBs in the nation coming out of high school. No other school offered him a shot at QB other than Tech. Lee had a dozen offers to play QB all over the country.

Lee http://georgiatech.scout.com/a.z?s=140&p=8& ;amp ; ;c=1&nid=4307579
Thomas http://georgiatech.scout.com/a.z?s=140&p=8& ;amp ; ;c=1&nid=5080928

Read the scouting report on both coming out of High School.

Over the last twenty five years we have had a number of QBs that fell into these two camps.

QBs that were highly rated and recruited as Quarterbacks:

Vad Lee

Donnie Davis

Jermaine Crenshaw

Brian Camp

Mark Logan

Players who were highly rated and recruited as DBs by most schools but came to Tech for a chance to play Quarterback:

Justin Thomas

Shawn Jones

Joe Hamilton

Josh Nesbitt

Based on history, the competition at quarterback could be interesting.

Are you sure about Shawn? My recollection is that he was a highly rated QB in HS.

Definitely recruited as a DB by UGA.

You might want to add in Damarius Bilbo as a highly rated QB.

Another category idea...

Highly rated and never played a down of ball at GT:

Stephen Threet
Jordan Luallen

Both were 4* QB's per scout.com

This is about as relevant as:  "4 season ticket holders never made it to a home game in 2012."

Ha ha.  Well, I put this in here to add to okeefe's list.  It also shows the danger signs of annointing kids as "saviors" as some did on the Hive back when those 2 guys signed - especially Threet.  We had one Hiver in particular who was posting that Threet was the "answer" who would get Gailey over the proverbial hump.  I also recall lots of extreme optimism about Luallen in that CPJ had "FINALLY" found his perfect combo QB to open up all the chapters in his playbook.

I will now go back and consult with stech81 on how he's doing with the Vad Lee and Justin Thomas statues.  wink

I think you forgot Sean Renfree. Not sure how he was rated though.

Sean never signed with Tech.  He committed, but then switched once CPJ was signed and CPJ advised Sean in all honesty his skill set would not likely mesh well with CPJ's scheme.

Otherwise, I agree with you.

Rating QB's humbug,  what we need is a 5 star holder for extra points and field goals .

This was my recollection as well, although Vad did make the ESPN150.  We have only had 3 other GT players make that list since it started a few years ago - they were Morgan, Burnett and Dwyer.  Hoping Vad lives up to that hype as well.  biggrin

But I did remember Vad being only a 3 star by scout and rivals as well I think.

I don't know what position other schools recruited Nesbitt for, but he was rated as the #9 QB in his class by Scout, and was a 4-star QB recruit.   See Here

Allegedly he had offers from Auburn, FSU and UGA.  Although I don't know what position those schools wanted him to play.

I also believe that Vad was recruited by some schools to play a position other than QB.  I don't think this is quite as black and white as you have presented it.

RE: QB Competition Observation

Interesting fodder, but let's talk about the competition this year.
It is going to come down to:
1. highly rated QB - Vad Lee
2. highly rated DB - Justin Thomas and
3. a walk on - Tim Byerly

I will not be surprised if the walk on takes the starter or 2nd string spot.

I'll see your Damarius Bilbo and raise you Mike Jolly.

There wasn't much in the way of national rankings back in 1976, but he would have been at least a 4 star, and maybe one of the top 3 in the nation.

The Elephant in the Living Room

And, of course, Reggie Ball.

Reg was a great QB in high school - three star - , but, if I remember correctly, almost everyone was interested in him as a WR or DB. We got him as a QB and the rest is history.

Here is your 5 star holder.  She has some nice points and I would like to make some goals in a field with her.

ESPN rated him as an athlete, not as a QB. He wouldn't have been rated as highly as a QB.

They projected him as a WR or a dual-threat QB.
