Re: good article plus a tidbit on kevin olsen(top qb and gregs
As far back as Coker being here, people on this board laughed at me when I said we need to have 6-7 QB's on our roster that way we always have a good one. I looked at USC and the way they recruited their QB's. It was easy to tell Miami was screwing up by only having 1-2 a year. Kyle Wright, Jacory, Robert Marve, none of those guys would have ever seen the field had their been a real competition with multiple QBs.
Glad to read that Golden and Fisch want at least 5 QB's every year. Olsen will make 6 for next year when he commits. I love it. These guys get it. They want to be QB U again. There will be no silly questions like, why didn't we offer Denard Robinson to play QB. We will improve the position dramatically. Its obvious it will happen.

Golden wont want to waste shollys..I think an annual 5 count is a good number for now. Especially if we lose a few over the next few years...No

They've never had more than 4, but don't ruin a good story. MiamiNights wrote:

4 or 5 are fine. The offense needs to be solid around them. Miami has not had a complete offense in many years.

Dewey, Crow, Thompson? He's certainly not going to ask Williams, Morris or however we land in 2013 go. Soooo why not 6 again?

When did USC have 6-7 QB's on it's roster? Leinert, Booty, Cassell, Hance, Hart, Hinds, McDonald. Hance saw action, Hart saw action, Hinds eventually transferred to UNLV, and McDonald was on scholarship as well. No walk ons of the 7.

Re: good article plus a tidbit on kevin olsen(top qb and gregs
I don't know what the optimum number of QBs toi have on the roster is, but I recall that Jimmy Johnson said back in the '80's that he wanted to recruit a minimum of one QB per year. I can't remember the exact circumstances, but at one point we were very thin. I think Kyle Vandeweghe had left after his sophomore year, Bernie Kosar turned pro, and that left us only with Vinnie T. and two true freshmen on roster: Bill Turkowski and Steve Walsh. JJ had to go to the juco ranks to find Geoff Torretta who helped save our season in '86 (until we blew it in the Fiesta Bowl). I think it was '86 or '87 when we were in even worse shape--Walsh was the starter, maybe Turkowski or a reshsirt Craig Erickson was behind him, and Jimmy brought back a former punter to serve as our third string QB: Kirk Sandifer. The next year we recruited Gino Torretta and we didn't really expect great things, but he surprised us. For a long time, we were chronically on thin ice with our QB depth. We could never go three deep with quality, like apparently USC could. We brought in guys like Joey Coles to be backups. On the other hand, I'm amazed at the kind of talent USC stockpiled. I guess the only time we approached that was probably '82, when we had Kelly, Kosar, Testaverde and Vandeweghe. Even Vandeweghe could have been a pretty decent QB, he started the last few games of the '82 season after Richt was suspended. He apparently became embittered when Schnelly threw open the QB competition for '83 and he lost out to Kosar. The lesson is, recruit as many good QBs as you can, and stockpile them. Of course when you bring in budding superstars, er, I mean senior managers, like this guy, you're always going to be in good shape http://broadlandsfinancial.com...bryan-p-fortay/Well, at least we followed up with Alan Hall.

I lived in Orange Park at the time when Alan Hall of Middleburg was heavily recruited. That area of the state is heavily UF, FSU, and UGa.
Sad what happened with Hall once we had him.

Sad what happened with Hall once we had him. I don't know if we ruined Alan Hall. I seem to recall that he had a disappointing senior season and some programs lost interest. He got very heavy, and I think that might have happened while he was still in HS. If somebody knows what really happened, I'd love to know. He came in with the '90 class. I know the coaches were excited to get him. Sad what happened with Bryan Fortay once we had him. I don't know that you could even blame that on us. He ended up a part time starter at Rutgers, I think. All the more reason to listen to Jimmy's thoughts and try to bring in at least one solid QB prospect every year. Hopefully, much more than solid. So, this is what really happened with Alan Hall. It was worse than I imagined. Keep in mind this article is five years old. I hope he is still doing OK. He probably never should have gone to UM. Wrong kind of environment. That is why we sometimes have trouble recruiting the smaller town north Florida kids, I think. Miami is a foreign environment to them. http://jacksonville.com/tu-onl...220626656.shtml

in my time living there, I noticed that. Most of those kids go, as I said, to UF, FSU, or UGa.
In H.S., he was a stud, mat. Believe me, I know.

Hall was coming in that summer. They had high hopes for him. I recall that he put on a lot of weight. I don't know whether that was in HS or after. Another wasted kid.

I recall his last H.S. game was a loss in the 1st round of the H.S. state playoffs in Ft. Walton Beach. Here's a story from two years that's the most recent. http://jacksonville.com/commun...r-clay-athletesHe currently lives in Winston-Salem, NC.

Another wasted kid. I was at that Choctaw/Middleburg game. Now granted Choctaw was stacked but good lord Hall was awful in that ballgame. He just didn't look athletic enough and I left wondering how this kid got an offer from Miami. I was stationed at Hurlburt at the time and the high school football out of Ft. Walton Beach was unprecedented. Two years before Kenny Felder led Niceville to a state title. Ended up at FSU. One year later Danny Weurffel led Ft. Walton Beach High to a state title.
