Oregon is 9-38 against Mike Montgomery...We are his bitch! (2 votes)
The Ducks were 9-29 against Stanford and are currently 0-9 against Cal during each respective school's MM era.
In Eugene: 9-14 In Palo Alto: 0-19 In Berkeley: 0-4 Neutral: 0-1
This game on Thursday is huge. Probably the biggest game of the year outside of, in my opinion, at UCLA. A win gives us another game in hand over another contender plus another "quality" win.
We need to triple team Allen Crabbe. Doesn't he average like 50 against us?

Re: Oregon is 9-38 against Mike Montgomery...We are his bitch! (2 votes)
Montgomery's first two years at Cal started in 2008.
Ernie's last two years at Oregon started in 2008. Ernie was 8-23 and 16-16. Ernie had been 18-14 in 2007.
Not hiring Montgomery at Oregon was one of the biggest missed opportunities in Oregon history.

I actually go back to a time earlier than that, and suggest that Oregon's biggest coaching hiring mistakes were not hiring Boyd Grant to replace Dick Harter when he left in 1978, or instead of Jim Haney in 1983.
That, plus not hiring Mark Turgeon instead of Kent in 1997 rates a close second.

Not hiring Montgomery at Oregon was one of the biggest missed opportunities in Oregon history. When was there an opportunity to hire Montgomery? Maybe after the 05-06 season when the Ducks 15-18, but Montgomery wasn't fired by the Warriors until August of 2006. The Ducks then proceeded to go 29-8 and make it all the way to the elite 8. In 07-08 the Ducks were a tournament team so there was no way they would of fired Ernie after that season. I just don't see where there was ever a real opportunity to hire him.

At the time I wanted Turgeon, but looking back I don't think you can say hiring Ernie was a mistake. It didn't end well for Ernie and it was time for a coaching change, but he took the program farther than it had gone in decades. Turgeon has never led a team past the sweet sixteen.

Re: Oregon is 9-38 against Mike Montgomery...We are his bitch! (2 votes)
After the 2008 season the inconsistency in Ernie's performance was very evident. In 11 seasons, he was 100-98 in conference. His overall record had been padded with cupcakes.
In 31 seasons, Montgomery has had 1 losing season.
In 31 seasons, his teams have won at least 20 games 19 times.
With the fund raising for the new arena underway, it is unlikely anyone would have had the guts to pull the trigger on Ernie back in 2008.
Would like to know if, how hard, that Kilkenny tried to get Montgomery after firing Kent.

I concur. Ernie was one of the few who would have accepted MacCourt and probably the only one who would have stayed around for as long as he did. Others would have been like Harter...gone for greener pastures.
Keeping him was the mistake. The inconsistentcy in performance of his teams..both between seasons, and within seasons, should have been unacceptable for those who desired something above mediocre for Oregon basketball. Many fans felt good about Ernie because Oregon had been mediocre for so long.

Re: Oregon is 9-38 against Mike Montgomery...We are his bitch!
This makes no sense. As Superduck noted earlier, Montgomery was already coaching Cal 2 years when Ernie was fired. He started at Cal in 08-09, which was the 8-23 year at Oregon. Prior to that year, Ernie's seat wasn't even hot - the Ducks had just been in 2 straight NCAA tourney's, including the Elite 8 year. It's not a matter of guts, AD's don't just fire coaches who are coming off back to back NCAA appearances, and only 1 year removed from probably the best season in the past 30 years. In reality, the Ducks never really had a chance to hire Montgomery. Such is life. I'm happy with the guy we got.

Re: Oregon is 9-38 against Mike Montgomery...We are his bitch!
I credit you for laying out the home and away records. Given that Thursdays game is in Eugene, and that we clearly have our best coach since Dick Harter in Altman, I like our chances. But for the first time I really, really would like Artis back for this game. Cal is playing good ball right now. The Duck team we saw this past weekend I'm pretty sure would have lost to Cal. Prior to the spiking of the pass the game clock went to zero. The game is over.

It got pretty toasty in the 3 years he went 22-32 in conference with some ugly losses. Then he saved his job with a NCAA berth. 2 decent years, then 8-23 arrived. That was the issue with Ernie...the inconsistency.

Horrible game for Montgomery, and he knows it. Oregon by a lot whether Artis plays or not. It's been too many games/years since Oregon won. Huge bulletin board fodder, and this Cal team is marginal at best. This is basketball jihad, people. Ducks by 20.

Some people look backwards and some look forward. The bay area has always been tough for the Ducks in both Bball and FB.

Once he lost his ability to get recruits from his assistants and associates that left who got him those players, he was done. That was the only reason why he won at Oregon- NBA level talent, and once that stopped coming into Eugene, he couldn't win anymore and that's why he was fired.

The assistants who got him the top recruits that were key to the 2007 run were all there at the end. The only assistant to leave after the 2007 run was Mark Hudson and he wasn't known as a recruiter. He was replaced in a desperation attempt by Ernie to save his job after the miserable 09 season.

Ernie Kent is and will always be one of the great Ducks of all time. There are a quite few who did more for Oregon but Kent deserves accolades for all he did for us. Those who attack Kent are many of the same who don't understand how good Brooks was. I admit Kent's time should of ended sooner, but his good times were very good for Oregon. The guy bled greed like few have.
If you want to pick on an old coach look no further than Jim Haney. This was an era when Duck Basketball was truly pitiful. Whoever hired the guy made a mistake and whoever, Bay didn't fire him sooner made an even bigger one.

Agreed! I am thankful for the time we had Ernie here. No one loves Oregon more than him. Not many coaches in America have taken their team to two elite 8's.

Bump. Now 9-39. We should rename Matt's court after him because he clearly owns Oregon.
I was hoping that Oregon would have went after Monty when the Ernie era was coming to an end (before Cal hired him).

Just shows why Montgomery outcoached Altman in both games. BIG TIME.

Monty has 2 players that can create their own shots - Cobb & Crabbe. Right now Oregon has nobody. DA needs to start recruiting these types of players as its clear Oregon has no option at the end of close games.
