Sorry, Oregon cannot be good in athletics.......... (2 votes)
I am moving on.
That was a quote from the athletic director in 1984, Rick Bay. Spoken to low key supporter Harold Taylor.......and me in Tempe Arizona before a football game. (He didn't say he was moving until later that year to be fair...)
Does that sound a little like.....Our students are busy and not up to presenting themselves in a competitive way when backing up our teams. Do we have to offer a prize for the best supporting group.
Seriously...........Colorado is not doing well in football and are not as good as expected in basketball this year. Still they are unbelievably supportive of the basketball team.
Our students are at the games..........But they lack leadership.

Harold Taylor was a great Duck, and I would never have called him "low key". He flat loved his Ducks, at least in my experience with him.Rick Bay was perhaps the most defeatist AD ever at Oregon, and he seemed like a solid hire originally. Oregon moved on, successfully, and he took a nose dive after Ohio State.

Harold Taylor did not demand attention. I believe he was the first booster to give $1 million.
He grew up in Estacada and did not attend college. A self made man. Taylor Electric.

Re: Sorry, Oregon cannot be good in athletics..........
My experience at Matt is that the students did a very good job of being vocal supporters of the team so far this year.
I wish more of us older fans spent some energy supporting the team with our voices during games at Matt.
Go Ducks!

It's funny how perspective gets warped on some issues, and what you bring up MagicBo with reference to Rick Bay, is proof of that outside of Oregon, too. It happened in Tucson at the U of Arizona in 1983, when their Men's basketball coach- Ben Lindsey, said after he was fired there that winning at the U of Arizona was near impossible, because of the great weather they have in Tucson, and that there was just too many other things that people can do there other than watch a basketball game. Lindsey said that you just can't win in Tucson. Lute Olson came in the next month, and took them to something like 25 straight winning seasons and NCAA tournament berths and won it all in 1997. It just goes to show that the Rick Bays and the Coach Ben Lindseys of the world simply didn't know what they are talking about.

Green 85.....I agree 100%.
The band is terrific .....The little kids are show offs and fun on the big screen and off.
SUCKS>>>>>>>>>AIR BALL win no games... Every losing team in the country shout air ball.
The students will be there. The noise meter is there. We are a long way from blowing it off the top.
Dana Altman says the team can use all of the support they can get and he appreciates it.

Re: Sorry, Oregon cannot be good in athletics..........
I guess I look at the positive of where we are ... knowing that things could be better. I have witnessed multiple student sections (different schools)supporting their teams loudly and in an organzied way.
I have heard the UO student section execute some organized stuff ... some "tried and true" and some "hackneyed" ... and it is still better than what some of us "old folks" are able to deliver.
Yes, Magic, the UO students could deliver even more energy and "fun support" for the men's basketball team in 2013. I remain hopeful that will evolve over the next couple of season as Dana Altman continues to deliver the quality play on the floor.
Go Ducks!

I have the best of both worlds I can tell not many educkers live in Eugene. I knew that because every where I go I see Ducks. Talking to them after a while I mention educk and they give me a blank stare. I have been on educk a long time. Back when I was trying to stop the booing of the opposing team when they come on the field because it made no sense to me I was wrong. Certain people pays their money and DOES what they want.
Don Essig has made a name from himself......"It never rains in Autzen Stadium." Things catch on. Something different and friendly. How dy GO DUCKS (loud from all over) sticks out to me as inoffensive and exciting (the noise) That could replace sucks for the rest of the season if no one can think of something different.
Thanks for coming GO DUCKS also comes to mind.........Hinting that they are in for a battle.
Did anyone else think that the "We are going to rock you chant" from the Cougs with 3 seconds or so left was kind of goofy?

Agreed, Magic. I did not mean to imply that. I was one of his bankers and we usually talked Ducks a lot more than we talked anything else. Oregon lost a great fan when he paassed.

Re: Sorry, Oregon cannot be good in athletics..........
Ben Lindsey was correct with what he said as very few students are allowed into McKale. Lute realized that the never ending cash supply that fills Big Ten football stadiums came to his area during basketball season. The UofA could care less about the students or young people when it comes to their basketball program. They want snowbirds, period. As Duck fans know anything is possible with money. If Phil Knight didn't exist Oregon wouldn't be half of the athletic department they are now. Arizona football will probably never make that Rose Bowl game they've been playing for since the 70's. There isn't any money in Tucson when it's hot out. talos4 wrote: It's funny how perspective gets warped on some issues, and what you bring up MagicBo with reference to Rick Bay, is proof of that outside of Oregon, too. Re: Sorry, Oregon cannot be good in athletics..........
Dana has specifically commended the Pit Crew for doing a great job on several occasions. The "sucks" thing during introductions isn't really my thing, but I don't really have a problem with it. The airball chant has been going on in arenas across the country for as long as I've been following college basketball. I'll give you that it's not too original, but again what's the big deal?
Maybe instead of expecting students to act how we want them to, we should just let them do their thing. The team is having a really good year and we should all stop worrying about the students and enjoy the ride.

His comments illustrate how people and even organizations have difficulty rising above the stated expectation level. MagicBo7 wrote: I am moving on.
