Re: Does Patrick winning the pole

I don't hate her at all, she just needs to be treated the same as every other person in the sport, this isnt her first race, she's been doing it for a while. people making such a huge deal about are the ones belittling her. Her sponsors and team owners have put her in multi million dollar car expecting her to win, so why is it "a women has changed the sport". its the media making like she has beat all odds when its a level playing field
thevolv wrote: I'm pretty sure 99% of people who know Danica Patrick won the pole this year, don't know who WON the race last year, nor any other Nascar race.

To the average sports fan, it's a completely irrelevant sport. If you watch real sports, outside of maybe the NFL, there's no way you can possibly watch Nascar. It's the definition of boring and uninteresting.

And, I would be careful hating on her too much, because, she's the only thing REMOTELY interesting in that sport to anyone outside the deep south.

Can you tell me who won the poll last year with out google? 99% of the people who know Danica won it this year do not know who won it last yr. but all this over reacting by the media people will remember next year for what somebody has done every year for 50 yrs.

Tim Teblow in the NFL. Denver's defense made him the mirage of a QB he really is.

I want to see the green flag come down, danica driving like any other woman.... 20 miles slower than the speed limit with 40+ other cars behind her, and with her turn signal on. Seriously, until Nascar adopts figure 8 tracks and convertible race cars, i'm not interested.

One small difference between soccer and NASCAR.

In soccer the Euros fall down, fake injuries and take their shirts off.

In NASCAR the Euros crash into the jet dryer during rain delays causing a fire and melting the track (actually Montoya is Columbian but he drove F1 so that's close enough to a Euro).

Hardly anything Macho about Nascar,...... not too worry, one of the butt hurt back markers will probably take her out and force her to the back of the pack.
Duckloyalist wrote: at Daytona take away from or add to the prestige of Nascar? Seems like a pretty macho sport. It would seem a women winning an element of a race would take away from how a sport is perceived. Congrats to Dana, but come on boys!

Totally agree about the endurance part. We once drove straight from Eugene to Pasadena and boy was that tough. We didn't wear diapers though like the Nascar drivers do so we did stop for pee breaks. What a bizarre activity when putting on a heavy duty depends is part of your costume...

BTW, we have this guy at work that I swear goes and sits on the pot for at least 45 minutes. Talk about endurance! I bet that guy would be awesome at nascar cause he can sit in one position for a long time. Plus for his feet to not fall asleep....must have great blood flow. Going to suggest to him today he try out for Nascar cause he has incredible sitting endurance.

You'll notice I didn't use the word "athletic." And it doesn't require athleticism in the sense of running and jumping ability (although young drivers seem to have more than average athleticism in that sense).

It certainly requires coordination -- the ability to process visual information very rapidly, and react quickly and correctly (not entirely unlike hitting a fastball). No matter how much time most people spend on a track, their brains aren't going to be able to handle that environment.

That it requires physical endurance is so obvious no explanation is needed.

But I agree that NASCAR is extremely uninteresting and unwatchable.

Bowlers require more athletic ability then a "Nascar driver"...

I would think the only general advantage men have is the physicality/strength/endurance to deal with the g-forces and such.

If you look closely at Patrick, she's a very strong little lass -- I assume she spends some time in the weight room. But as she's still probably a good bit lighter than her competitors, and she's a competent driver, I don't reckon it's terribly surprising that she's as fast as anyone on an empty track.

Apparently she lacks skill/talent compared to the upper echelon of drivers, which doesn't have anything to do with her sex.

OK, so name me the last woman to win the pole at Daytona (Nascar's biggest race)?

Oh... she's the first?

Well, then it's a big story. Just like it was probably a big story the first time a woman jockey won the Kentucky Derby.

And, just like it would be if a woman wins a PGA event or some other male-dominated event.

Throw on top of that, that she's hot.... and, you have the only reason anyone outside of the die-hard Nascar fans (who'll watch anything that goes VROOOM really loud) would ever care to watch ANYTHING about Nascar on tv. Ever.

You realize sportscenter and espn are crap now right? If you watch their programing other than live sports is just a soap opera. If people didnt care about DP they wouldnt go on and on about her.

So you are 1000% wrong.

She will not be "treated the same as everyone else" because she is NOT the same as everyone else no matter how much you may want to try and convince yourself and everyone else otherwise.

I mean *** is it you're after? More stories on Peyton Manning and the Red Sox?

Sorry, I am the one who thinks she has as good of a chance as winning as any man has of winning, that's why I don't think it's a big deal, your ideas are old fashioned , it's not 1950
