Does Patrick winning the pole (5 votes)
at Daytona take away from or add to the prestige of Nascar? Seems like a pretty macho sport. It would seem a women winning an element of a race would take away from how a sport is perceived. Congrats to Dana, but come on boys!

Re: Does Patrick winning the pole (8 votes)
It means she'll still finish 15th or worse and ESPN will try to sell her as a 10 when she's clearly a 6.
Remember when she almost won the Indy 500?? By almost won I mean 4th place. Would you ever hear them say a guy almost won by finishing 4th? No, because that's not almost winning. It's too bad she stalled her car in the pits then spun out on a restart as well.
She has one win in 183 professional races. She is about as threatening as that fly over on your window. That evil fly, just plotting away!

Moss, you are correct that she is overhyped as a driver, but you are crazy if you think she is a 6! She's at least an 8 or 9.

Re: Does Patrick winning the pole (4 votes)
The pole means absolutely nothing. It's a nice little accomplishment and that's about it. She's been handed top equipment her entire career and has one Indy Car win to show for it. There are far more accomplished drivers out there who can't find jobs or are racing for low budget operations.

Re: Does Patrick winning the pole (4 votes)
I'm pretty sure that the guys also have great cars and tried to win the pole. They didn't. She did. She averaged 196+MPH to beat out Jeff Gordon who had this to say:
"This is great for the sport and the rest of us will benefit from it," he said. "I'm proud to sit on the front row with her."
I suspect some of you may struggle with the way the world is changing and the roles that men and women play but hang in there, it will be alright.

Lots of publicity ... an interesting person ... poor results in competition. What other competitive athlete gets her kind of press that is not based on actual performance?

Re: Does Patrick winning the pole (3 votes)
So pole position highlights how good your equipment is? How you place in the end, how accomplished a driver you are? I don't know a lot about Nascar but this seems to put car racing into the horse racing, competition status where men and women compete against each other pretty much equally. To me this is a blow to the sport. This at least, should provide some interesting discussion. --------------------------------------------- --- superduckdc wrote:

Re: Does Patrick winning the pole (2 votes)
I have absolutely no interest in, and don't follow NASCAR, so I can't comment on the "interesting person" comment. As for another athlete, the obvious one is Anna Kournakova - who is WAY more attractive than Danica (IMHO), which easily explained the publicity. If Danica is an interesting person, as you say, that could help explain some of it.

Re: Does Patrick winning the pole (3 votes)
It about winning races, not winning poles. There's plenty of drivers out there who have won multiple poles, but have never won a single race. If Danica Patrick starts winning races or piling up top 5's or even top 10's for that matter it would be great for the sport, but she hasn't shown the ability to do that consistently during her career. Most drivers with her performance record would be out of work or driving for a low budget operation whose goal is to simply make races. I have nothing against Danica Patrick. She just gets a lot of hype for winning so very little. --------------------------------------------- --- Nautiduck wrote:

Kim Kardashian comes to mind, except that she has ZERO talent to do anything, but with proper publicity, marketing, and A LOT of heavy make-up and cosmetics, anything is possible.

Re: Does Patrick winning the pole (3 votes)
I couldn't care less about the left turn circuit, but I don't see anything wrong or abnormal with her winning the pole position. good for her. I mean she's one one woman out of 35-40 drivers...long odds.
That said, she gets a lot of attention, maybe more than she deserves, mainly because she's good looking, and a female in a male dominated good ol boy sport, but she's a decent driver too.
all in all, this is a back page, below the fold, slow day sports story.
Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind.

If she wins and people complain that a female shouldn't win NASCAR, then perhaps you suspect right. Until that day happens, what you have is an overhyped story and someone who uses her uniqueness to get attention. More power to her, I have nothing against it. Winning the pole is big, but let's see if she can actually do well in a race first.

Re: Does Patrick winning the pole (5 votes)
When she qualifies she is about 40 pounds lighter than any other car in the field. By yourself that is wonderful. The great equalizer will be in a pack with other cars. The weight will count for nothing and everybody will be pretty much even. Equipment is big in NASCAR but if there is one track (two actually, including Talladega) where equipment is least important, it's Daytona. Restrictor Plate races is where you see the biggest underdogs in the sport get victories.
I've been racing for a long time and have seen a lot of women come and go in the the sport. I have no problem with Danica but based on talent level I'd be very surprised to see her win a race. There are a lot more talented female drivers in the world that you will never see at a NASCAR level.

--------------------------------------------- Kournikova, a good comparison at first glance (pardon the pun). But at least Anna at one time held the #8 world ranking, and on occasion the #1 ranking in tennis doubles.

A woman is competing with men in a sport where physical ability is very important. Gets my respect.

She is not going to win the race instead she worked hard to get where she belongs taking care of the pole.

RE: Does Patrick winning the pole (4 votes)
I'm a big open wheel fan and miss the G.I. Joe 200 dearly, but Danica has gotten so much unwarranted hype that there were rumors of her joining F1, which is ridiculous!
Between Cart and the IRL they managed to kill or cripple the bulk of their driving talent and have sent one driver to the F1 level that had success.
Villeneuve (who wasn't American, btw) was so much better than everyone else in Cart with the Players team he lasted two years and was in F1. His F1 success had a ton to do with equipment but he was still the best driver in any American league.
The reality is if an American driver has to turn right they are no longer competitive with the rest of the world, which is sad and pathetic, but the truth. How one of the worst professional drivers from a country of awful drivers gets so much publicity because they are a woman is just silly.
