all of our other coaches who have gone further than how athletic the players is.
The Alabama kids look like a felony waiting to happen.....AND the Bama coaches aren't doing much to reform them into good citizens.

I agree to some extent Magic...
but as a coach, you never see this kind of stuff happening. I know this may sound hypo critical but I don't feel like coaches are in the "reform and rehabilitate" business. I agree that it a lot if situations coaches can try and help a kid get things figured out, but IMO this situation is beyond that. Phl,
I agree with you all of the way. I am not trying to knock all of the other coaches, just trying to thank our coaches for the new policy....ie, checking out the kids before offering.
I want to thank you for all of your good stuff. You have just replaced Marty as my go to guy ...

Only kidding, Marty

I agree blaming Coaches for kids going down the wrong path and making bad decisions never made any sense to me. My 7 grade teacher Mr. Fellman had it right when a kid acted up in his class – he would scream out it’s the parents fault!

Re: Kudos to Chip Kelly and
The Oregon coaching staff has faced off-field issues with players, including some on Chip Kelly coached teams:
Jeremiah Masoli Jamere Holland Rob Beard Embry Cliff Harris Darron Thomas (by association) LaMichael James (incident with his girlfriend) Josh Huff (DUII)
We all want the student-athletes on the teams at Oregon to be good students, good athletes and good people. BUT any time you bring together a large group of people to form an organization you are bound to have individuals make choices that reflect poorly on themselves and their group - it happens in colleges, high schools, and companies everywhere.
Yes, I think the Oregon coaching staff makes a point of looking for "good people" to build their teams. But even a "good person" can lack appropriate judgment at any point in time - and I cannot hold a coach or teacher responsible when those folks can't watch the student 24-7. --------------------------------------------- --- MagicBo7 wrote:

Agree Bo. UO coaches look for good characters as a foundation
for playing for the UO. When problems happen, the athletes know the coaches won't tolerate deviant behavior. The comments about coaches not being responsible is secondary to the issue.

I got a private message saying that my comment could be considered racist.
Furthest from what I meant to say. As I told him, my son Doug and Anthony Newman and Anthony Taylor were best friends at Beaverton. Doug went to PSU and pitched for Jack Dunn for 4 years because the Ducks didn't do baseball at the time.
Our daughter in law is black as are our two adopted grand kids ages 2 and 5......Super kids with and super mom and dad. The two year old is Quentin and he is one to keep track of..
Should be D1 material.........lol...

Re: Kudos to Chip Kelly and (2 votes)
Although no coach, or school, can guarantee that some athlete won't make a horrible choice at any given time, I do believe there is a difference in the type of due diligence that Oregon (and some others) use to vett their recruits. Alabama places the highest priority on the kids on field results, and pay little attention to both academics or character. Oregon also makes on field success the highest priority, but closely linked with their review of both character and academics. It is interesting that Oregon, under Chip (and I hope it continues under MH) actually brought teammates into the process to discuss how they see a prospective recruit as a teammate. That input has actually led to Oregon passing on several high profile kids that looked to be headed to Oregon. I doubt that Alabama extends themselves to that degree. Oregon does not recruit saints, but there is an honest effort to not recruit kids with the reputation of being trouble makers.

It is a miracle when you get over 100 athletes together and don't have at least a couple who get in trouble I know at least 3 of those mentioned about from the dog park. The average student could have the same "problems" that these guys had and it would NEVER get published..
Darron Thomas's crime was sitting in friend's cars.......
Obviously these Bama kids need someone to work with them to help them...........IF POSSIBLE..
Did you notice? Those names and happenings basically were a while ago..

RE: Kudos to Chip Kelly and
Say what? What's the point of athletics for kids if it isn't learning life lessons. Why would a coach think he gets a pass if a kid gets in trouble off the field? Sports are part (theoretically anyway- excepting the SEC) of the entire academic learning environment. It isn't the coach's fault the kid gets in trouble but the coach needs to be part of the lesson that needs learning when one does.

The fact that those players knocked their victims unconscious is the part that especially bothers me. No, I don't think stealing is okay, but assaulting someone into unconsciousness is a whole new level.

I wasn't offended by the pm. It was nicely worded.
You know what really offends me is football fans who are BIG TIME rooters for their team BUT......at the same time look down at people of a different color. (racist)

You make a valid point that no program/coach is immune to such things.
However...
Chip did seem to place a higher proiority on character when he took over. Case-in-point:
Masoli, Holland, Beard, Embry and Harris were all "Bellotti guys" as he was the coach when they were recruited (add in Blount, or even Kiko, if you want). I know Masoli, Holland and Harris had some very well known baggage with them when they were recruited to Oregon. I'm not sure they "make the cut" on Chip's recruiting board (although, who really knows).
In the cases of LaMichael, Thomas and Huff: While all made some errors in judgement to put themselves in the situations they got in... all 3 really didn't do much "wrong" (IMO). And, certainly not to the level of these Alabama players (or, for that matter: Masoli, Embry, Cliff, etc).
I really do think that this program under Chip has put a high value on character in recruiting, and it has shown. Both in the fact that 100% of his recruits qualified (so far), and in the (relative) lack of off-field issues in the past couple years. Hopefully, this trend continues going forward.

I think it's this part that comes across... "iffy":
"The Alabama kids look like a felony waiting to happen" (what exactly does a "felony waiting to happen" look like?)
I noticed it when I first read the post, but, based on all the Magic posts on this site over the years, I didn't really think it was meant that way. However, I could see how it may come across as such at first glance. Particularly, if you were looking for something to get your panties in a bunch about.

Re: Kudos to Chip Kelly and (1 vote)
Agreed. I agree that in the time that Chip was head coach, Oregon has had some measurable success with the type of recruit the have on the roster as far as limiting problems.
And IMO it is a HUGE feather in the cap of the Oregon staff that recruits on the roster have ALL qualified to-date under Chip Kelly recruiting efforts. Coach Bellotti and Coach Brooks could not demonstrate that type of academic success in their recruiting efforts over the years.
I did not intend to imply that even Oregon's previous issues were of the type that Alabama has today with the recent off-field acts.

I guess that I can understand the following names when it comes to referencing off-field issues with players who played for Chip Kelly:
Jeremiah Masoli (burglary, marijuana in car while suspended) - Booted
Garrett Embry (burglary) - Booted
Rob Beard (street fight, watching Bowlin's back) - Suspended two games, beaten up
Cliff Harris (excessive speeding, driving while suspended, smoking it all) - Booted
As well as the following:
LeGarrette Blount (fighting during a game, bringing shame to the program) - Suspended 10 games of his senior season
Mike Bowlin (street fight, saying mean things to a woman, not watching Beard's back) - Booted
Kiko Alonso (DUII, menacing while intoxicated) - Suspended for entire sophomore season and the first game of his junior season
Eddie Pleasant (street racing) - Scarred for life, suspended two games after missing one game for recovery
Terrance Montgomery (domestic abuse) - Booted
Tyson Coleman (attempting to elude, minor in possession, showing recruits a dorm room filled with hoochies and a bong) - May be on a short leash at the moment, was suspended for the Rose Bowl due to the attempt to elude and minor in possession charges
But these guys did very little to nothing and are being associated with the above:
LaMichael James (all charges dropped with the exception of 4th degree menacing) - Suspended for a game
Jamere Holland (lazy at school and practice, not very smart when it comes to social network postings) - Booted
Darron Thomas (what did he do wrong besides be a passenger in the same cars as Pleasant, Masoli and Harris?...he was never charged with anything) - No action taken
Josh Huff (acquitted...so the DUII reference to him no longer applies) - No action taken
Isaac Remington (same as Huff...case dropped, no guilt or reference to DUII should be applied) - Suspended for a game, but was allowed to travel and possibly play in consideration of whether his case would be dropped in time...it wasn't.
Of the players listed above only Tyson Coleman, Josh Huff and Isaac Remington arrived after Chip Kelly became head coach...and Huff and Remington technically didn't do anything wrong other than make themselves targets for police officers who wrongly exercised their intoxication sensors. The others were all Mike Bellotti's recruits.
Knock on wood, but so far everyone else has done a good job of being outstanding citizens. Then again, now and after Spring Drills are usually the time for shenanigans to happen if they happen.

Re: Kudos to Chip Kelly and
There is nothing remotely close to Oregon's "off field" issues and Alabama and Auburn players committing premeditated violent crimes.
The worst off field incident I think is Embry's non violent burglary. But correct me if I'm wrong. He wasn't even a Duck football player when it happened. He had already been booted from the team. It was never established Masoli had anything to do with it. What Alonzo did was bad on the surface. But that should be in the category of embarrassingly stupid. Kind of like OSU players stealing sheep.
This incident at Alabama suggests serious lack of control where players are doing whatever the hell they want and don't know up from down. The fact that they quickly dismiss these players and throw them under the bus makes it even worst IMO. Clydekins wrote:
