B1G set to eliminate games against FCS teams
This is a great move for CFB as a whole. I am glad that it is being done but this will effect the Pac-12 in a big way. I have always supported the Ducks playing FCS games because of the need to "play the SEC game". Since SOS is not a major part of any of the computer formulas, it did not hurt us to play these games. In fact, you could argue that playing Arky State and Tennessee Tech in 2012 put the Ducks in a better position to play in the BCSNCG. But...
With the WAC dissolving, there are ZERO "cupcake" leagues for the Pac-12 to draw from. Playing low level MWC teams (i.e. UNLV, New Mexico) or hoping a MAC, Sun Belt or probationary FBS team (i.e UTSA, Georgia State) will travel will have to suffice.
The B1G (MAC) and the SEC (Sun Belt) are in much better position geographically if this decision gets adopted across the board. This is a win for all of the mid-major leagues as they should see their guarantee games go up and the revenue increase. 2-for-1's will be abundant. High level BCS against low level BCS will also increase, say WSU playing at Ohio State for example.
With this move, 9 game conference schedules need to be made mandatory.

The only downside of this is...
...for the FCS schools. Many of their athletic departments rely heavily on the bigger payday that games against an FBS school provides them. It will be interesting to see how this shakes out for them.

I'm sure Minnesota will be glad to get North Dakota State off of their schedule.
If you can't beat 'em, ignore 'em.

RE: B1G set to eliminate games against FCS teams
If more conferences adopt this, I can see the spread between FCS and FBS grow. Without the extra money and attention from playing the bigger schools they might regress some.

maybe more of the "elite" FCS schools jump to FBS if for no other reason then they need the cash to fund the rest of their AD. RE: B1G set to eliminate games against FCS teams
It's too bad that the SEC and the Big 10 are having to make their schedule honest now that the playoff system is happening. It's a good thing though overall that other leagues will hopefully follow and play a 9 league schedule.

Re: B1G set to eliminate games against FCS teams
I personally think this is a great move by the B1G. I wish the P12 would do it as well. I just don't buy any "need" to copy what the SEC does in their scheduling. It's like arguing that someone else acted like a jerk and got some benefit from doing so, so I am therefore justified in acting that way too. IMHO, none of the power conference teams should be scheduling FCS teams. The more teams and conferences that do what the B1G is doing, the more it will guilt the primary offenders into stopping.
BTW, Arky State is not a FCS team.

Re: B1G set to eliminate games against FCS teams
I guess I'm in the minority here. Just because you don't schedule 1-AA teams (FCS if you must), doesn't mean you're not scheduling cupcakes. The lower tier Division 1 teams aren't much better (if at all) than the better 1-AA teams.
When a conference commits to playing only other BCS schools I'll be impressed with their "gutsy call".

Re: B1G set to eliminate games against FCS teams
Correct. Many FCS teams could, and do contend with some of the mid-low FCS teams year after year. See:
North Dakota State over Kansas, Colorado State App State over Michigan Montana over Oregon State, Idaho Eastern Washington over Idaho All of FCS over Idaho Youngstown State slaughtering Pitt
Oh...and Sac State's recent visits to Corvallis.....and Boulder...

Montana State over Colorado
Problem is these losses help kill the SOS of an entire conference. Bottom-feeders may as well lose to FBS teams instead of FCS teams.

Re: B1G set to eliminate games against FCS teams
Can't argue that. But to say it's good for "all of college football" draws an eyebrow when you consider there are 115+ teams in FCS.
Some of whose communities rely on those athletic departments.

Re: B1G set to eliminate games against FCS teams
I have zero problem with teams playing FCS schools, esspecially if they play 9 conference games. The BCS conferences who only play 8 conference games, though, I am not wild about playing FCS teams.
An example is in Arizona, where UA and ASU are required to alternate playing NAU every other year for the money that NAU gets from it. I think Oregon and OS should alternate with Portland State for the same reason, instead of giving Nichols State money from the wallets of Oregonians.
