Interesting. Seems like a colossal waste of money if that is the only time the helmets will be used...

Better to take the money used to make those helmets and donate it to groups that honor or care for our veterans than to just make helmets.

Colossal? How do you put a price tag on the publicity that will be garnered by Oregon's constantly changing uni's? When I read comments from kids on the east coast that grew up as fans of Oregon it is almost universal that the uni's were what started the attraction...

So are the helmets meant to honor the troops or create publicity for UO so that kids on the East Coast will grow up as fans? If it's to create publicity, well done. If it's to honor the troops, I stand by my original comment.

Um, they sell all the helmets after the game and then donate that money so it's not a "colossal waste" as you put it.

Stick to complaining about night games. You're much better at that.

Daisy, I assume you have attended some of these, as you do attend the regular games. Do you honestly believe that the focus on the military from this game is lost on those who count? The fans and military join together as a public show of support, and if Oregon gets any publicity, that is a side product. The minute this game goes on television, it is a public relations reality, whether that is its basic intent or not. To me, this is a win/win. Speaking from personal experience of having a grandson in Special Forces, and having attended these games, any emotional support generated for our military is a good thing, especially in light of what they are currently facing from our national leadership.

Re: Camo not a new idea

The camo helmets are not a new idea.

Here are just two other examples:

Ohio State - 2011

blogs.orlandosentinel.com/spor...mo-helmets.html

South Florida - 2011

blog.predatorbdu.com/2011/09/u...rm-for-wwp.html

A Google search will bring up several more such as Virginia Tech, etc. Army football helmets, not surprisingly, are among the Google search returns.

But, the two linked articles point out how Ohio State and USF sold the helmets and used the money to benefit military members.

First, I am not taking anything away from the publicity given to the troops. And yes, I do attend the Spring game, bring more than my share of good food for the Food Bank and am touched as members of each branch of the services stand during the ceremony when they play the anthem of their service. They are already making special shirts to be shared with the service member linked with each player. I would think that shirts are much cheaper than helmets to make. It is my opinion that the money to make them could be put to better use by spending directly on programs that help our troops, especially those returning physically and/or mentally injured.

"....the two linked articles point out how Ohio State and USF sold the helmets and used the money to benefit military members"

At this point we don't know UO's plan, or the cost to purchase specialty painted helmets, or whether Oregon will sell them to the public at a cost equivalent to Ohio State, or whether they can be repainted to replace damaged helmets, etc. In other words, we have no basis to claim that directly donating money to organizations has a better financial equation, than the alternatives of what Oregon may actually do.

I'm not going to express an opinion based on conjecture without actual facts.

They do give the camo shirts to the military in attendance, free. The helmets, as another poster shared, will probably be sold as a fund raiser. I have no problem with that. Anyone who objects is able to donate directly to either the Wounded Warrior Project, or Paralyzed Veterans of America. Both of those groups work ceaselessly to care for our returning wounded, both physical and mental. I assumed that you probably contribute at these things, and apologize if you felt my earlier comment was disresepctful. That was not the intent.

has this been your stance on all of the SMU (special make up) pieces Oregon has worn over the last decade?

i've always found it best to not worry about how other people spend their money...

Whew some of you sure are sensitive, don't read carefully or are just eager to jump in. I said that to spend money to make helmets to wear ONE time seems like a wasted expense to me and the money could be better spent by a direct donation. I have no problem with the shirts made or the game being dedicated to the people who have served or are serving in the military, it's a fine idea. The cost of making shirts is negligible when compared to making helmets.

I am not "worried" how others spend their money...but I can and do have an opinion on it and there is nothing wrong with that.

You gotta look at the BIG picture, here.

The cost to buy the helmets goes to the company who makes them (a local one, if I remember correctly). For all we know, they could be donating money to similar causes (or, not).

But, assuming, that the helmets will be auctioned off (which, I think, is a reasonable assumption), then I think it's much better in the long run for us to pay for the design and creation of these helmets. If for no other reason than to help stimulate our economy (ever so slightly).

Say we spent $100K on these helmets (as a nice round number).

I'd rather see that $100K be put into a local business (helping to maintain/create jobs) in exchange for a new product...

Then, the UO can market, promote and merchandise this new product (and, complementary gear, such as t-shirts, hats, etc), which, again leads to more commerce, and a stimulated economy...

Afterwards, the UO can auction off this new product for charity, maybe even for more than they initially spent, as game-used specialty equipment (particularly from a Top 5 football program) can often fetch a pretty penny...

Meaning that, in the end, not only did these charities benefit (as you wanted), but, we have now also help support a local business AND stimulate the economy a tad in the process. Oh, and a Ducks fan has a sweet new souvenir helmet, and that glowing feeling you get when you donate to a worthwhile cause. A true, win/win/win!

[obviously, I made some assumptions here, but, I think they are reasonable, and, you get the point]

Mosely apparently tweeted that those are not the helmets for the spring game.

Re: Special Helmets for the Spring Game?

Donations of money are great and always help.

Publicity and awareness generated, from the fancy helmets, might result in greater long-term donations than the short-term cost of the helmets. Every website and tv show that "leaks" those helmets will mention the charities UO is trying to help.

During the telecast, thousands of people will learn about those same charities. ESPN will probably run "highlights" on ESPNU or some other channel. Again, mentioning the charities.

Free advertising on Pac12 network, ESPNU, multiple internet sites, newspapers, etc. If you calculate what an advertisement would cost on those multiple mediums it is probably much greater than the cost to produce the helmets.

In the long term, I think much more money will be generated from the free publicity related to those single-use helmets than the money charities would gain from one large donation.

At the same time, donations of money are great and always help.

Re: Special Helmets for the Spring Game?

Well, thanks for making this discussion completely pointless! :P

Of course, this now begs the question....

What are the REAL helmets gonna look like?

[and, how are we paying for them?, where does the money go?, are they a tax write-off? etc.) :)
