What will improve under Helf?

What will improve under Helf? Post Rating (3 votes)

I say the passing game will improve. We have MM as a seasoned qb and receivers/TE who will be a more seasoned group. What do others view as areas we can improve?

You won't see them going for it on fourth nearly as much as you're used to. Chip was willing to take the blame, and frankly he had the reputation and record to do it. He could afford to make mistakes and not pay for them (losing job). Helf, being a newcomer to the HC position, will likely play it safe for his first year or two until he can cement himself as a solid replacement.

I think the media will be kinder to the Ducks because Coach Helfrich is such a nice guy.  How could anyone, including local media and rivals, not like him after watching his signing day media conference?  It's not for show either, I think what you see is how he really is.  Great coach, great dad, great husband, just a great guy.

The biggest difference is that Helf will be more donor and Oregon fan friendly.  Not much else should change significantly.

I really hope that Helfrich goes for it on 4th as much as chip did. The hurry up offense and quick decision to go help tremendously in picking up the damn thing. Plus it seems to put a lot of confidence in the offense. Not to mention from a purely mathematical/statistical standpoint, it makes sense to go for it frequently. I liken it to hitting on 16 with the dealer showing a 10. You might bust, but it's the best move and will pay off over time.

We could be signing some big guys on the Dline with our new position coach. I like our Dline play but would love to see us take it to a new level. It should also be interesting to see how Frost impacts the team in his new position. Helf will undoubtedly make a few mistakes early on but I like what I have seen so far.

I think we will still go for it plenty on 4th down--it just makes too much sense.

As far as what may improve, I think Helf may have somewhat less stubborness with certain plays than Chip (e.g. Barner up the middle over and over).

Re: What will improve under Helf?

If you take Helf's resume and compare it Chip's when they first took over Mark's has a lot more clout.

Coaches have a certain way and it will either work or it won't. If Helf is going to coach in such a way that he is more worried about job security than doing things his way then they've already made a mistake by hiring him.

I think going for it shows confidence in your team and think it keeps the opposition worrying that they don't only have to stop us 3 times.

It is one of the things that raised the DUCKS to a higher level.

Absolutely Joestud

It would be lots more fun if we allowed the reserves to play football instead of running out the clock after we put the other team away...It could be a reason for attendance to be waning.

I am not intending to run down CHIP KELLY...my hero!!!  Remember I flew to games away from home when we lost too many of them.  I appreciate the change in my lifetime....lol..

As long as our decision isn't influenced by our lack of confidence in our kicking game. I agree it is to our advantage to keep the other team thinking about how we might go for it on fourth. May all our decisions be influenced by strength and not just creativity in the future!

I hate it when we are afraid we might beat the other team

by too big a score.   The stalling to save their face.  I feel that could be the reason for a few less ticket sales.  Don't have to fake a kick with the score 59-3 from our 6 yard line but make it entertaining for the people that spent the money and the time.

Also, I love Thurston's on side kick.  Again, it would probably make the bad guys mad.
The 2 point conversion when they give it to us is very nice.  That doesn't need to change.

You know, don't fix what aint broke.

Agree! If FG kicking and kickoff/return coverage doesn't improve, it will cost the Ducks at least 1 game.

A few booming fricking punts would be nice too.

The main reason our punting was bad was we were trying to get the opposition situated on the 5 yard line or less.

IMO there was nothing wrong with our punting.  If we can kick the ball into the end zone and it comes out to the 25 that's ok.  However, best would be a towering kick that can be covered easily that lands of the 2 yard line.

The pros used to always kick FGs if they didn't get a first down.  Bellotti followed along with that...7 or 8 points is better than a possible 3.  I like going for it in most cases and that is why we blew so many teams out.
