Will Helfrich be as secretive as Chip? Post Rating (5 votes)

Closed practice, injury reports, recruiting? All of those things hinder us as fans but help the program to be where they are today.

I haven't read any updates, but I'm guessing it will pretty much continue with Helfrich, because that's the way it's going in college football.

Even though I used to attend practices occasionally, I can see keeping them closed. Too many people can video a practice and post it on the internet, practices were getting too crowded especially on days when they were in the Mo (which was most often).

Was it fun to attend practices, especially back in the days when hardly anyone attended and we could talk to the players, bring a picnic supper and sit on the grass slope as we watched (back when they were across the street)? Sure!

But it's even more fun watching Duck games these days!

Not to be a jerk at all Post Rating (7 votes)

but how does that hinder people as fans?? IMO fans believe they are entitled to more than they deserve. Practices got closed for a few very specific reasons and none of them were done to hinder fans.
As far as things opening up under MH, I doubt it. I think he may open some things up in the spring and early on in the fall, but during the season, no. This is turning into the rule around college football, not the exception.

Oh wait, I agree with you.

The closing practices is such an overblown issue.  So it impacts a few fans and local media.....wahhh wahhh wahhhh

Injury report, while selfishly I would like to know I understand the basis behind it.

I'm all for closed practices and no injury reports. The only thing I think would be cool would be 1 practice in which fans could attend....oh wait, I guess that's the spring game.

YES Annie Duck1...

But it amazes me that some donors will continue to belly-ache...

  • Here is a Fortune 500 company (Oregon) whose sole purpose is to have double digit % gains (win their conference, go to BCS games) at the expense of their competition (Pac-12 conference) in a highly competitive industry (D1 football).

  • This industry (D1 football) is an ever evolving one where trade secrets (plays, practice style, etc.) are often copied and/or modified (zone read, hurry-up, spread, etc.) or compromised (injury reports)..by the competition for their own gain...

  • Success in this industry is clearly defined:  Big Gains (BCS Bowls) = big returns for the company (season ticket renewals, expansion, merchandise sales, TV revenue, higher enrollment, Top 10-15 recruiting classes)  OR Losses (No Bowls or lower profile bowls, empty stadiums due to lack of season ticket renewals, operating at a loss, recruiting struggles)

  • These BIG gains (12 win seasons, BCS bowl games, national exposure) are also distributed to the shareholders (DAF members, season ticket holders, alumni) who choose to contribute (DAF contribution) OR not contribute (not renewing season tickets) based on their rate of return (12 win season, 9 win season, 7 win season).

  • The CEO (Chip Kelly--> Mark Helfrich) is the company figurehead who is in charge of all major decisions vital to maintaining double-digit gains. Among these decisions is whether to allow some of the top shareholders (major donors) into the prototype facility (practice field) at the risk of a possible breach of information (plays, formations, cell phone pics. cameras, conversations, injuries) that could possibly be accessed (internet, twitter, facebook, etc.) by a competitor (Pac-12 teams).

  • When a breach occurs, the company culture (through outside influences) is allowed to change, and the company loses its identity. A company without an identity (UW) will attempt to hold on to antiquated values which served a purpose in an era where there were very few competitors in the industry. These same shareholders who have enjoyed their returns (BCS bowl games, bragging rights) due to many years of the company's double-digit gains, are the first to threaten management with a hostile takeover unless the CEO, who allowed them access in the first place, steps down. (Fire the coach, or we will not donate)...

When you have a local media whose primary goal is destroying your program it is a good idea to keep it closed.

As a member of one of those groups, that is nonsense. There is not a coach at this school who does not acknowldge those groups. However, pandering to them is probably what some really want, and the good coaches are coaches first, and then PR guys/gals. These coaches owe nothing to a media that seems to only have one mission, and that is to cut their legs out from under them.

All very reasonably put, Roger........but on the other hand some of these donors want their coach to personally recognize them and their importance while they glad hand after the game in front of their wives or the business guests they've brought with them to the game.  How are they ever supposed to maintain their aura of importance in the coach doesn't slap their back and kiss their butt in public ????

sarcasm alert !!!!!!!!!

I hope so,..especially with the injuries, day to day suits me just fine, how they hinder you as a fan is beyond me. I don't get to see Blazer practices and guess what??? I'm a fan. I've only been to 3 Seahawk games in my life, been a fan since the Jim Zorn days,.....guess what?

I wonder if Helfrich will continue the Spring Game theme of saluting and honor the military. Its a nice tradition that Chip started and I hope MH continues on with it

You don't have a right to that information. They will let you know if you need to know about how secret they will be.

Re: Will Helfrich be as secretive as Chip?

The word hinder to me is simply that I rabidly look for info both before and after the games. I live for it. If I can't find what I am looking for it is frustrating to me.

Believe me, I don't want the news to fall into the wrong hands either.
