NFL in Oregon
I grew up in Oregon and never really had an NFL team being pretty much equal distance from Seattle as I was San Francisco (or Oakland depending on the year and the Raiders location). Also the NFL network didn't exist and the coverage options were not as great as they are today. So I grew up a fan of the league and not so much any one team.
That being said I have noticed a lot of favorable comments about Chip Kelly and the Eagles (now that the shock has subsided) and was wondering if people were going to suddenly become Eagles fans. Logistically it wouldn't make much sense, but regardless of the Chip-isms most of us all really liked Chip and pretty sure we would like to see him do well in the league.

Re: NFL in Oregon (3 votes)
From a Duck perspective, in the "short to intermediate term", it probably helps in recruiting if whatever version of "the gimmick" CK decides to use in Philadelphia finds success. Actually, I think it is already helping to see teams like SF, Seattle, and Carolina find success with the "read option", and NE with its version of the "hurry up".
Personally, I don't really have an NFL team; but, I tend to pull for teams a little when I do watch with some former Duck players (Haloti and Dickson in Baltimore, JStew in Carolina, LMJ in SF, etc.). I think I'll pull for Philadelphia too, some for Chip, but more so for the reason I do think there are some positive perception gains to be made if Oregon's former coach (and system to the degree it is used) is successful in the NFL.

I will always love Chip as a coach, but now that he's coaching the Eagles, that means he will be trying to beat the sh!t out of my Cowboys twice a year. He's now the enemy rubberducky wrote: I grew up in Oregon and never really had an NFL team being pretty much equal distance from Seattle as I was San Francisco (or Oakland depending on the year and the Raiders location). Like many, free agency has lowered my interest in the NFL, and I really don't have a favorite team any longer. I like to follow the Ducks who are in the league, and pull for their team, unless there are Ducks on both teams (an increasingly pleasant problem). I was once a rabid Cowboys fan, due to Renfro and Gaechter, but when Jerrah took over, my interest stopped.

Re: F@#K the EAGLES!!!
Not surprisingly the 49ers have a lot of fans in Southern Oregon...going back to the 1980's.
Fans who wear 49ers gear, travel to the Bay Area, etc.
For example, in 2012 the Southern Oregon Duck Club combined a bus trip to Cal with the 49ers game on Sunday.

No, still think Philly and Detroit have the worst sports fans in America. Won't be a Eagle fan ever.

I'll definitely watch Eagles games when I get the chance. The problem will be actually having Eagles games televised in the Portland market.

Do you think that Monte Kiffin the Defensive genius, is just freaking out now that he had to leave SC, after Kelly schooled him? And, has to try and stop Kelly now, twice a year? He better just retire now.

Using that logic, shouldn't Sarkingham retire?

Like phl, I grew up a Cowboy's fan. In fact, my wife has a cousin who played for them and in the Hall of Fame. (Anyone remember Chuck Howley?)
But since Jerry Jones bought the team, I haven't been as much of a fan. And being in Oregon for 20 years now, it's even harder.
I'll be rooting for Chip in most, if not all games.

I absolutely remember Howley. IIRC, he started with da Bears, and then went to Dallas, and was a great college athlete. So Jerrah drove you away too, lol.

As a Raider fan, I'll be pulling for the Eagles in the NFC. I don't hate the Seahawks now that they are out of the AFC, so a Seahawk/Eagle match-up would probably have me leaning Seahawks.

Yea, just couldn't stomach the way Tom Landry was treated and I still despise JJ.
I've got an autographed photo of Chuck Howley hanging in my office. I guess I was mistaken, he's not in the Hall yet. But he does have the distinction of being the only Super Bowl MVP from the losing team, and one of the few defensive players to win the honor.

Re: NFL in Oregon (1 vote)
Former Cowboy fan(since 1970), new Eagle fan. Finally grew tired of the Jerra show, he's a People Magazine owner in a Wall Street Journal league. Add in the hiring of Kiffin to deal w/the spread option wave that is sweeping the division and I am done, gone.
It's kind of liberating! One more thing I am indebted to Chip for.

Even though I'm born and raised in Eugene, I've been an Eagles fan since I was a little kid rockin' my Ron Jaworski jersey.
It's been rough lately as I'm not, and never was, a fan of Michael Vick or MeSean Jackson.
Looking forward to Chip doing good things for my Eagles!

Re: NFL in Oregon (1 vote)
I grew up in Michigan... but have been in Oregon since 1980. That said, I was cursed in life by being a Lions fan. Since living "out west", I don't really have much passion for any pro teams. I usually root for the team with "Duck" players on them.
