Regardless of DUCKe's history revisionist post, Jody Runge was fired because of a player revolt. She was not the strategist. The male assistant, short fellow, I've forgotten his name, was the only person who even spoke or drew diagrams during times out. Jody just stood there and listened. I had season tickets during Jody's tenure, and the first three years of Bev.

Back to PW, it's past time to get rid of the part time WBC. Is there another college couch that has he's work hours, NO. From Rob M. article in the RG today it sounds like PW will be back next year. WOW This year he is using the injury card, but what about the last couple of years????????

Re: How would you like to earn $675,000 a year to do nothing?
You're thinking Fred Litzenberger, who was until recently, the coach of a women's Collegiate team (Vanguard University) in So-Cal, in Marty's neck of the woods, iirc. His teams down there had a great number of Oregon girls High school players (mainly Oregon City girls) as transfers on them during one time for many years.
You're also right about Fred being THE brains behind the team- especially in terms of defense, too, because he was. Jody was a good coach, obviously, but those in-the-know have said that the great success of the women's team was due to Litz primarily, and having really good talent to play there. Litz was also responsible for the great success of the men's teams too, during his run as the primary defensive coach under Kent.
I also believe that the major reason why she has not gotten a job anywhere else, is because she was black-listed as coach by the former Admins (Moos and others) at Oregon, who created a means by which she could not find work anywhere else. As far as I have heard, Runge is still selling at the Nordstroms up in Portland.

So as a business runner does it make sense to pay someone the same amount of money, when you are LOSING big bucks, as someone who is running a business that is making money? No business would do that and stay in business long.
There is the right way of fighting for your "rights", and a wrong way. Jodi took her issues to the public instead of keeping it in house.
She got what she deserved, and more with the settlement.

Here's a link to a nice clear picture of Jody Runge talking to her players on the sideline that clearly shows that GrampaDucks version of revisionist history is far from accurate. a.espncdn.com/photo/2012/0604/mag_rg_runge_576.jpg--------------------------------------------- --- GrampaDuck wrote: Regardless of DUCKe's history revisionist post, Jody Runge was fired because of a player revolt. Runge had a Pat Summitt personality (3 votes)
Oregon and the Pac-10 was not ready for that type of personality. A gruff personality for a womens b-ball coach. Almost every year under Runge they at least had a chance with a highly ranked Stanford team.
--------------------------------------------- --- DUCKe wrote:
I hate to say this, but it was far more than "one" former administrator. It was pretty much the entire "good old boys" crowd in the athletic department that threw her under the bus.
They were unaccustomed to a female womens sports coach that was as strong willed and outspoken as she was. Their kneejerk reaction to her totally destroyed the perennial tournament qualifier level program she had built. She has long since admitted that it might have been better for her to have shown a little more patience for some of those departmental reforms to take place.
Had she not been pushed out the door, Oregon would probably be one of the top WBB programs in the nation.

And that female administrator you talked about finally got forced out after several years of ineptness.
--------------------------------------------- --- DUCKe wrote:
That is simply not the case, Runge most certainly liked the fans and loved her players. She was confrontational with an athletic department that was showing very little support for female coaches and womens sports at that point in time.
The girls that threw the big fit the year she left have since apologised for their actions and stated for the record that THEY DID NOT CALL THAT MEETING, it had been called by an athletic department administrator.
Runge would have had the full support of todays athletic department at every level and would have had nothing to be confrontational about.

She wasn't liked cause she chose to be confrontational at every turn. She didn't like the AD, didn't like the fans, and reportedly didn't treat her players very well
Other than that, Runge was perfect

BS Grandpa........ That was Fred Litzenburger.
That is like saying Chip stood on the sidelines while the assistants coached. She had the teams prepared...plain and simple. I believe Fred coached under Bev for awhile and he did not do squat.

RE: What if Pat KilKenney stepped up and paid his friends salary (2 votes)
What would Paul Westhead think if his friend payed his last years salary to end the situation one year sooner?
What would he say to KilKenney? Thanks! or would he turn it down?
That would be a weird situation.

Re: How would you like to earn $675,000 a year to do nothing? (1 vote)
"Runge bought the inn the same year she resigned after a tumultuous final season at Oregon. She was 38 and figured she would take a year off to let the dust settle before returning to the game. But a one-year break turned into five, and five turned into a decade. In the 11 years since she left, she has applied for more than 50 jobs. Exactly one school interviewed her in person -- a Pac-10 program that arranged a furtive meeting, seemingly loath to reveal her as a candidate (ESPN W 6/4/12)."
I'll admit, I don't follow women's hoops that closely. However, a 38 year old coach with a record of success, eventually should find a hire, no? I understand the idea of being "blacklisted"; but, 50+ jobs and no hire? That's a lot of jobs. Out of 50+ jobs, you think someone would see past the "blacklisting" and give an accomplished coach a shot, no? A fair amount of time seems to have passed ...

except arizona was always terrible under john mackovic, and our women's program most certainly wasn't being torn down during runge's reign at the top. it was ascending to heights never before seen in program history. the way a lot of people remember the 'player revolt' is bill moos instigating a meeting prying for gossip like a god damn thirteen year old girl; many players wrote to the administration after runge was dismissed saying it was completely bogus. i believe you'll find quotes to that extent in the ESPN article that has already been linked.

Re: How would you like to earn $675,000 a year to do nothing? (2 votes)
This kind of talk always reminds me Jim Haney who was Dick Harters top assistant. They said the same thing at the time; Haney is the real brains and strategist, the players look to him, blah, blah, blah.
If Fred L. was the brains under Runge then by what you say he needs to be credited with all the success and NCAA tourny appearances.
So here is my question. Why is it he is not coaching in a major conference and taking his team to the NCAA on a regular basis like he is said to have done at Oregon?
This idea, in my opinion, is a common mistake when it comes to basketball. Take Harter, Wooden and Ralph Miller. All three generally appeared as if they were just standing around, and their assistance were doing it all.
And yet all threes had long time assistants promoted when they left. They all failed miserably. talos4 wrote: You're thinking Fred Litzenberger, who was until recently, the coach of a women's Collegiate team (Vanguard University) in So-Cal, in Marty's neck of the woods, iirc. --------------------------------------------- Actually Rene Baumgartner had a lot to do with the player revolt being swept under the rug. Notice she's gone too? It wasn't just Moos looking for things. Players came to Baumgartner and she ignored them, then they went to Moos, and So did coaches.
It is/was Moos' job if there are allegations of abusive behavior to look into things. He did the right thing. Winning at all costs is not how it should get done. Winning the right way, within the rules, without abusive or over the top behavior is how it should get done.

Westhead will be 74 in a couple weeks. End of discussion. Its probably time Oregon moved on to another coach and there is no need to dump on Westhead. Lets just say this is about the age Paterno was at when Penn St should have let him go. And Westhead is no Paterno (either in the good or bad way).
Prior to the spiking of the pass the game clock went to zero. The game is over.

Re: How would you like to earn $675,000 a year to do nothing?
I was in school at the time and played ball at Eslinger and at the bean courts with all the women's team nearly daily at times. I never heard any complaints from any of them and all were very pissed, after she was let go, that I spoke with. Now, that did not include that last team as a whole, but the last team she coached had some kids with issues.
Separate of that I did talk with her before and I never got the impression that she was combative or abusive or disliked fans. Bowel Movement and a few other old boys in the AD did not like the fact that she bitched about the men's coaches salary. That was the beginning of the end, the rest just added up.
I always liken what I heard to Heartbreak Ridge. Someone in the AD got to the players and implied they'd bring in a players coach, a nice person and then asked the players what their issues were with Runge. That is how the meeting was described.
Anyway, my two cents.
