Paul Westhead is already fired. Just as they reward coaches for success they should have a clause that you can be terminated at any time if your horrribly bad. So why dont they just pay Westhead 675,000 which is next years salary now. They probably would come out ahead if they got a iterim coach, even a kids sports coach to coach one year for an incentive 150,000 with increased attendance. www.registerguard.com/web/spor...-women.html.cspIf he had integrity he would resign and not collect next years salary.

It's shameful how bad he has turned this into. I normally don't go to the extreme, but I agree about your last sentence. How can he honestly look in the mirror and say he deserves this income?

i have a real hard time feeling any sympathy for this program. we used to have a championship-level team playing in front of packed crowds and made annual trips to the big dance, but a former administration threw it all away for no particular reason.

The good thing is Mullens will right the ship.
I agree. Get rid of the clown.
It doesn't take long to turn around a bball team with the right coach.

Re: How would you like to earn $675,000 a year to do nothing?
I went to the game Friday because my friend's daughter was singing the national anthem. It's hard to watch them play. They run down the floor take a quick shot and usually miss, and then don't play defense. His system reminds me of the rat ball that I used to play in the Rec Center. Westhead had nice run with the Lakers over 30 years ago, and then had that LMU team 20 years ago, but other than that his record is pretty ugly.

Championship level? I'm not knocking Bev Smith, but what championship were they ever in contention for? I seem to remember a second place once...but it's not like they fired Chip Kelly in favor of Tedford or something.

She wasn't liked cause she chose to be confrontational at every turn. She didn't like the AD, didn't like the fans, and reportedly didn't treat her players very well
Other than that, Runge was perfect

Heaven forbid a woman trying to get some semblance of equality from the AD!
Runge was a great coach! Big mistake letting her go!

Runge was a great coach, but there were some issues . . . don't you think there is a reason she never got another coaching job?

Yeah nobody wants to hire someone who will fight for pay equality!

Re: How would you like to earn $675,000 a year to do nothing? (3 votes)
I hate to say this, but it was far more than "one" former administrator. It was pretty much the entire "good old boys" crowd in the athletic department that threw her under the bus.
They were unaccustomed to a female womens sports coach that was as strong willed and outspoken as she was. Their kneejerk reaction to her totally destroyed the perennial tournament qualifier level program she had built. She has long since admitted that it might have been better for her to have shown a little more patience for some of those departmental reforms to take place.
Had she not been pushed out the door, Oregon would probably be one of the top WBB programs in the nation.

Re: How would you like to earn $675,000 a year to do nothing? (2 votes)
That is simply not the case, Runge most certainly liked the fans and loved her players. She was confrontational with an athletic department that was showing very little support for female coaches and womens sports at that point in time.
The girls that threw the big fit the year she left have since apologised for their actions and stated for the record that THEY DID NOT CALL THAT MEETING, it had been called by an athletic department administrator.
Runge would have had the full support of todays athletic department at every level and would have had nothing to be confrontational about.

The first mistake was firing Runge. The second was replacing her with an underqualified Beg Smith. Kilkenny did the right thing by firing Smith, but instead of doing a real search gave the job to his buddy and made the situation worse. Mullens has an opportunity to fix what two of his predecessors have screwed up badly. We'll see what he does.

I agree with you. It reminds me of what happened when Arizona fired Dick Tomey. oregon11 wrote: i have a real hard time feeling any sympathy for this program. we used to have a championship-level team playing in front of packed crowds and made annual trips to the big dance, but a former administration threw it all away for no particular reason.
