Jabari Greer "cornering" opposing offenses
Kristian: Greer corners opposing offenses
Kristian Garic Reporting The Saints are off to a fast start standing atop the NFC at 6 and 0. They've gotten it done with an explosive offense and a ballhawking defense. It's a defense that added several key contributors during the off-season. The Saints signed Darren Sharper and Jabari Greer in the defensive backfield to get their hands on the football and prevent the big passing play. Sharper has six interceptions, three of which have been brought back to the house. Greer has just one pic, but his ratio of completions vs. attempts (on a receiver he's covering) is an impressive 33%. The NFL standard is generally anything around 50% is good. Players Greer covers only catch the ball a third of the time. Greer is also second in the league with 10 passes defended this season. That's the number of balls he knocked away from intended receivers. "He's one of the guy's that doesn't get enough credit, he's been a fantastic addition for us this year" Saints General Manger Mickey Loomis said about the addition of Greer. If you ask Greer himself about his play, he'll constantly deflect praise to his teammates. "It all starts with the defensive line, the ability to pressure the quarterback, the things we've been able to do makes it that much easier for a corner. The way that these guys are putting pressure on the opposing quarterbacks, they're not making my job difficult at all, and having the safeties that we have the way they've been playing this fall," Greer told WWL. If you watch closely, you will notice teams tend to shy away from trying to "make their money" against Greer, instead choosing to go at cornerback Tracy Porter opposite of Greer. "Yeah, I've noticed that teams rarely try to pick on Greer, not that you want to pick on Tracy Porter either, I mean he's playing pretty well also, but opponents definitely have respect for Greer." WWL's Bobby Hebert Explained. The Saints defense has scored 5 defensive touchdowns in 6 games, 4 as a result of interceptions returned for scores. Greer humbly awaits his turn to run one back. "I think it is my turn, but as long as we are making plays and capitalizing on opportunities, I'm happy." Is Greer headed to the Pro Bowl? Hebert says it could happen. "I think if he keeps playing like this, he will certainly be in the conversation. The problem is that if teams stop throwing at him, he won't have the opportunity to make as many plays." Why isn't Greer being mentioned in that conversation as one of the best corners in the league? "It's still early in the season, none of that matters. The most important thing to me is winning, and putting things on the field, doing what you need to do to give your team the opportunity to win. The year that our defensive lineman, and our safety's are having, they're doing the real work. Any recognition that I get, I automatically deflect that to them, they're doing the real work," Greer once again humbly replied. I know the "team first attitude" displayed by Greer is extremely refreshing, but cherish his play Who Dat Nation, you're looking at one of the up and coming corners in the league. "He's outstanding, and if you think about it, he's the best corner the Saints have had in a long time," Hebert insisted. In a position that has seen Jason David constantly draw the ire of Saints fans, and oh let's not forget about Alex Molden (had to slip that reference in there) it's nice to finally see solid cornerback play from that position.

Thanks for the read FF3. Reading the last paragraph makes me think back to the last good corner we had. I have to go way back to Toi Cook.

I think the less we hear his name, the better he's doing. For once Quarterbacks can't just pick on one part of our Secondary. Their taking calculated risks everytime they throw the Ball. I love it.

Re: Jabari Greer "cornering" opposing offenses
Tracey Porter did huge for us also at Miami. Pick 6 plus batted away a ball right into Sharpers hands that was returned for a TD. Makes 12 points, without these points this could have become a very close game.
Offensive player of the year ~ Congrats to Drew Brees

Re: Jabari Greer "cornering" opposing offenses
I really didn't expect this kind of play from Greer when we got him... This guy has been locking his man up every week... Suddenly I'm not so worried about Roddy White, Steve Smith, and that guy in Tampa killing us with big plays.

Re: Jabari Greer "cornering" opposing offenses
People see the yards and points we've given up and think same ol Saints Defense. What their not looking at 's how much of those stats came in Garbage time.

Re: Jabari Greer "cornering" opposing offenses
I don't know about yards, but the defense has only given up 10 points in the 4th qtr in 6 games. No garbage stats there...... Definitely not the same ol Saints defense though. This defense forces alot of turnovers and covers alot better on the back end.

Re: Jabari Greer "cornering" opposing offenses
Yeah we give up a BUNCH of garbage time yards... I'd like to see where we'd be ranked if our D kept the pressure on in all our games.

Re: Jabari Greer "cornering" opposing offenses
Any yards that do not end in points at the end of the drive = garbage time yards? Otherwise I don't agree with teams getting most of their yard in "garbage time". A lot of teams have been able to move the ball on us, just not score on us which is a even better in my opinion. As long as we keep opposing teams' scores down I think our defense is excellent.

Re: Jabari Greer "cornering" opposing offenses
No, garbage time is when the Saints have a 21 point lead in the 4th quarter (ie.have the game well in hand) and are playing prevent defense and not attacking anymore... Thus allowing teams to rack up easy yards on us.

Re: Jabari Greer "cornering" opposing offenses
Gregg Williams doesn't play prevent. He generally keeps his foot on it for 60 minutes. Just looked at the Detroit game. Out of a total of 231 yds, they gained 46 total yds in the 4th qtr. I could go back and do them all if you really want to know. It doesn't really matter. Yall are winning games, be happy.......

Really? Because from what I've seen he does play a little softer if the game is out of reach for our opponents... Hell I'm not the only one saying this, the N.O. media says the same thing just about every week... It may not be the typical prevent defense but he does not keep the foot on the gas so to speak for an entire 60 minutes if the game is pretty much over. And we're not complaining about this at all (atleast I'm not) we could be the 32nd ranked defense for all I care... as long as we keep winning.

What I really love about this Defense is that every time we need a big a play they seem to come through for us. It's getting to the point wherevI expect them to make a big play and not give one up. Used to I would cringe everytime our Defense would take the Field. 3 key additions were all it took to turn this unit around. Williams, Sharper and Greer.

RE: Jabari Greer "cornering" opposing offenses
Yeah I remember in year past when an opposing QB would get ready to launch one deep I'd cringe knowing that it's either gonna be a touchdown or a big gain... Now I'm expecting a pick or a pass break-up... Love this new D.

Ya, Bullocks, Jason David, and Fred Thomas couldn't have inspired confidence. McKenzie was ok..... Night & day with Porter, Greer, & Sharper.
