Mark Ingram's preseason: 7.05 YPC & 2 TDs

biggrin

Mark Ingram rushed eight times for 46 yards in the Saints' third preseason game Saturday night at Indianapolis.Looking quicker this year, Ingram broke off a 17-yard cutback run on New Orleans' opening drive to get the offense into scoring position. Ingram also made at least two critical blitz pickups with the first-team group, keeping Drew Brees' pocket clean. Through three preseason games, Ingram has 21 carries for 148 yards (7.05 YPC) and a touchdown. He also caught a 23-yard touchdown in New Orleans' second exhibition game. Ingram remains a value pick RB3 often available in the double-digit rounds of fantasy drafts.

Two schools of thought here.

A.  Mark looks 15-20 pounds lighter or has changed his pad levels because he doesn't appear to be running straight up and down.  Looks quicker and more decisive.  His cut through the hole tonight was a thing of beauty.

B.  It is a damn contract year and the Saints do not have a history of paying big money for a RB nor should they.  After basically wasting the better part of three years waiting for Ingram to hit the hole and show a burst of speed I'm sure he will have a breakout year.

So a great year by Mark will leave him wanting to get paid or wanting to leave in all likelihood.

I am not disagreeing with your points, but he has been injured. Two years ago he led the team in rushing iirc, and last year down the stretch he was pretty good. Personally I just think he is healthy now for the first time in awhile.

The way the Saints rotate backs is interesting to watch. I am just glad they are using Mark in something other than third and two situations, to give him a chance to really run with the football.

I'm not necessarily blaming him just kind of saying that it figures.  The Saints spend a 2nd round draft pick to move up a year early to take him and may only get and true handful of meaningful games.

I agree that Ingram turned it on at the end of last season.  Now one could argue that was also by design.

Ingram could have easily be cut after last season as most of his guaranteed money had been paid out.  Now whether he realized that near the end of the year or whether the light just went on.  There is no doubt that Ingram at least gives the appearance of someone that finally understands what the Saints expect from him.

I understand that it is difficult to get into a rhythm and that is another reason that I pay little attention to his yard per carry average.

Commenting on his size and speed that may have been the fault of the Saints.  Ingram was drafted to be that bigger back that could move the chains and pick up those tough short yardage situations.  With that being said Ingram likely was encouraged to stay at a certain size.

I believe this also caused a changed in the Front Office.  A change in Thomas' role as well as the Saints trying to become move balanced.

Unless Ingram rushes for 2000 yards and 100 TD's...I don't see the Saints offering him a significant contract next season...more likely showcasing himself for a future team...unless...he's not asking an arm and a leg...which I doubt...
