Saints sign DT Isaako Aaitui

By NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune

The New Orleans Saints announced Thursday that they have agreed to terms with defensive tackle Isaako Aaitui on a two-year contract. The announcement was made by Saints' Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis.

Aaitui (full name pronounced e-saw-AH-co ah-ah-2-e), 6-foot-4, 315 pounds, originally joined the practice squad of the Miami Dolphins midseason in 2011, spending the 2012 preseason with both the Dolphins and the New York Jets.

The Pago Pago native was a four-year letterman and two-year starter at UNLV, where as a senior in 2010, he was a third-team all-Mountain West Conference selection, appearing in 13 games with 12 starts and ranking second on the Rebels with five tackles for a loss.

Has he ever played a down in the NFL?  I wonder why we put a 2 year deal on it.

If I had to guess it is a two year deal to be able to spread out the money in the deal.

Also typically this type of deal is given to be able to bring him in and take a look.  If he doesn't make the team then he basically will be owed nothing.

You have to understand that the this guy is no different than Tom Johnson.

Is he going to be a star? No

Can he be a serviceable role player that eats up plays and fits into the salary cap?  Possibly

Undrafted guys like this often have to go to 2 or 3 teams to find one that really needs him at that position.  More than likely when he signed as a free agent with whomever he was brought in as a project so it wasn't a need for them.
