Phoenix - The New Orleans Saints will host free-agent linebacker Victor Butler on a visit Thursday, according to a league source. The Saints are looking for outside linebackers as they convert to a 3-4 scheme under defensive coordinator Rob Ryan.

Butler, who is 6 feet 2 and 245 pounds, played under Ryan with the Dallas Cowboys. The 25-year-old had 25 tackles and three sacks last season. He was a fourth-round pick by the Cowboys out of Oregon State in 2009.

Butler has already visited the Steelers during free agency, but left Pittsburgh without a contract.

CBSSports.com first reported the news of his visit.

I really think this is the best OLB prospect for us to get on the open market.

Ryan knows him and it gives us a huge piece in the puzzle.  At 25 years old and with 4 years of experience with the NFL this truly is like getting an extra draft pick if we can sign him.

And unlike a rookie he is a player that you can expect to come in and contribute.

Plus as a bonus he already knows the system so he will be ahead of Wilson and Galette and can help translate some of the verbage to the other players.

Ultimately if the Saints can sign Butler I think that it allows them to be able to look solely at a DT in the first round or be more willing to trade down for a later selected DT and a Safety.

I agree. This man has size, speed (around a 4.6 40), and youth. Unlike too many Saints lb's with speed and no size or strength (think Casillas), or size and no speed (Also too many Saints lb's).

At 25 years old I think Loomis needs to role the dice and offer up to a 4 year deal with at least about 2.5 years guaranteed.  I could see Butler getting something around $14-16 million for 4 years.  With $9-10 million guaranteed.

You might could offer a little less with the extra 4th year in the deal which would offer more guaranteed which may be more than others are offering.

In his case I dont care if the Saints have to outbid another team within reason.

He'd be worth it, as opposed to giving a king's ransom to some team's cast-off has-been. Actually the other type of lb the Saints are used to, besides the fast and small type, are the slow, small, and stupid type, LOL. Don't think too many of 'em ever have size, which is why it would've been a bad move to move Harper to an outside lb position.
