It is Official--Ryan to run the Defense

The New Orleans Saintsmade it official this morning with the hiring of Rob Ryan as defensive coordinator, giving the team its third in three seasons and fourth overall under Sean Payton.

Ryan interviewed for the job on Friday, a little more than a week after his apparent hiring in St. Louis with the Rams fell apart. The Saints are expected to transition to a 3-4 defense with their new coordinator. The Saints also hired Stan Kwan as an assistant special teams coach.

“I'm pleased the opportunity has presented itself for us to be able to add both Rob Ryan and Stan Kwan to our coaching staff," Payton said in a statement released by the club. "In regards to Rob, we have experience in preparing and playing against his defenses and they've always been challenging in terms of the different looks and pressures that they feature. We've had the chance to visit with each other and talk about our visions for our team and I'm excited about moving forward as we prepare for the 2013 season.

I wouldn't not have minded if we were able to interview Tomsula and Leavitt.  I don't know if Jim Harbaugh would have given them permission to interview though.

We have Ryan now.  Lets go with it.  From what I've read, he has always had handcuffs on his defense and he's never been able to do, not that I know what it is, so lets go.

Well that last part might be a reason for concern.  You would have to ask why he has been handcuffed.

Is it because he has always worked for cautious coaches or is he too reckless and has to be reigned in at every turn.

There must be something coach Payton see's in Ryan...maybe it's his fiery attitude...maybe he likes his passion for the game...coach states that he liked how Ryans defenses were challenging...still...all in all...Dallas hasn't been to the playoffs since coach Payton has been our head coach...and we've played against  alot of challenging defenses in that time...guess he figures that with our great offense and Ryans challenging defense...we may go places again...guess we'll see....

2 points here.

1) Smith ran the 4-3 defense in Chicago and if we had stayed with the 4-3 then he would have been a good candidate.

2) Smith is going to remain out of coaching this season in an attempt to be more attractive as a head coach next year.

That is a good point about the evaluation process.  Payton has gone up against Dallas and Ryan's defenses.  Even if a team does not have the personel to be successful in doing something Peyton understand the philosophy or the strategy in what his defenses were designed to take away and how that forced New Orleans to attack them.

Brees has already stated that one of the reasons that we were changed to the 3-4 was the difficulty that New Orleans faced in trying to decide how to read and attack those defenses.

I too am cautious about this one (most of us are it appears).  Trusting the coach is the way to go here.  My problem is simply his defenses have never faired too well in the big picture.  GW's never did either but my God anything is better than that crap we were all forced to watch this past year.  I cannot wait to see the coming personnel changes.

It will be interesting to see the changes that are coming.

Obviously I think that Ellis will not be resigned.  Smith will be cut for salary issues.

It will be interesting to see what the Saints choose to do with free agent Casillas and with veterans Vilma and Harper.

The Saints will have to choose whether to keep those veterans or try to plug in pieces that may better understand the 3-4 defense.  It may be that Vilma is the best option to pair with Lofton at the ILB positions, but Vilma is probably on his last year of being a serviceable player it may be time to move on.

I'm not sure Casillas can fill a LBer role on this team.

They can't cut Harper because he is guarantee almost as much as his salary.  Guaranteed another 6 and will make 7 million.

Keep throwing big names at the problem and hope it gets solved. Ryan had a ton of talent in Dallas and still couldn't succeed. The Saints have VERY little talent on D and Ryan hasn't been worth a damn in how long now?

Defensive talent is definitely a concern and I too have my reservations about Ryan.  Of course with the scheme change there is a least hope that we will see shift with some of these less talented players hitting the road and hopefully get better players in.

One important thing to remember is that with the Saints potent offense, we do not need a top 5 defense.  If we could be a good consistent defense (even middle of the pack) Drew and company should be able to score more than enough points to keep the wins coming and make a strong playoff run.

This was my first choice.  The crazier the better when it comes to DC.  I want a coach that gets emotional and hollers and screams at the defense to get them fired up...even a little spittle is ok.
