Saints intend to hire Rob Ryan

Report: Saints Intend To Hire Rob Ryan As Defensive Coordinator

Nate Bouda

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that league sources have informed him that the Saints plan to hire Rob Ryan as their next defensive coordinator.

Larry Holder of the Time-Picayune reports that a source he “truly trusts” has said that Ryan to the Saints isn’t “a done deal” just yet.

Holder adds that a league source mentioned that the Saints will interview Georgia DC Todd Grantham on Thursday and Ryan on Friday for the position.

Gil Brandt of the NFL Network tweeted earlier in the day that both Ryan and former-Chiefs HC Romeo Crennel were the Saints’ “top choices” for the job.

Ryan was previously with the Cowboys before they elected to bring in Monte Kiffin and move to a 4-3 base defense. Following that, Ryan to the Rams seemed all but done before the two sides decided to back out of an agreement.

New Orleans will implement a new 3-4 defensive scheme in 2013 and Ryan offers plenty of experience with that system. We’ll have to see if there’s something an official announcement in the near future.

This is who I wanted from the get go....Rob Ryan backed out of the Rams deal, because someone from New Orleans gave him a call...someone who had to wait to be reinstated.

I hope to hell not...didn't do SQUAT for the Cowboys...he's a Gregg Williams clone in personality and a huge risk taker just like Williams....live by the blitz...die by the blitz....

No.
The Rams wanted Ryan to run a 4-3 (base) defense.
He (or the Rams) backed out because he wants to run "his" 3-4 defense.

Ryan has been very public about wanting to be a head coach.
His best chance at that is by running a defense the way he wants to run it.
The Saints will give him that chance.
He gets a lot of publicity and talks the talk.....he hasn't walked the walk....so far.
The Saints offense putting up 30 pts per game should allow him to be very aggressive so you never know.....noidea
_________

His defenses Points per Game rankings as a DC

Oakland

2004, 31st

Guys I am fine with that and you cannot always tell the story based on points per game.

Dalas and Romo were a turnover machine, so a fumble at the 30 is points that still go against the defense.

His defense kept Dallas in a lot of ballgames last year and it cannot be worse than last year.

Williams' blitz packages were fine, but you cannot blitz every down.  I think Payton will have more control on that.  His attitude with Williams was to let him do his own thing and after 2009 you couldn't really blame him, but I think we all know that the window to win is going to be a small one.

For Brees and Payton both are looking at the next 5 years to cement their legacy on the game.  While it is unlikely that Payton would step away after 5 years you don't know if his career will end in New Orleans.

I believe Drew's place is set.  He is a HOF player.  He will have all the stats and will have the Super Bowl win something that eluded Marino.

For Payton it will be a little different, He will have the Super Bowl win so another would put him in a new category, but it will be interesting to see how the media regards the "Bountygate" scandal and how they vote because of it.  My feeling is that by now most of the media has changed and few understand the little evidence that was actually presented.

Points per game is a way better stat than yards per game IMO.
Teams can give up a lot of yards but either get a high number of turnovers (2009 Saints for example) or clamp down in the redzone and force field goal attempts and they're fine.
Ryan's defenses have historically been bad at both ypg and ppg.

The money stat on defense IMO is getting off the field on 3rd down.
Dallas was 25th in the league in that category.
BTW, for all of Rob Ryan's supposed blitzing and bringing heat, the Cowboys were 20th in sacks and dead last in ints.
So much for making the qb uncomfortable....

He has the Ryan name and reputation but he's not been a good DC to this point.
He's not his brother,Rex or his pop, Buddy Ryan.

If he's hired in Nola, I hope he does a good job for y'all.
As was pointed out, whoever comes in has nowhere to go but up.
Spag's defense was not good.....

I think most of us would be fine with a defense in the 20-24 range.

With our offense that should win us 11-12 ballgames.

Hell...I think most of us would be happy if the Saints were more technically sound in tackling the ball carrier...wink
