Interesting Senario set up for final weekend

While next Sunday's game vs the Carolina Panthers does not have playoff implications.  It does have meaning in several different ways.  The result of the Saints/Panthers and the Bucs/Falcons games will determine division standings and draft position for next season.

Current Records

Saints 7-8
Panthers 6-9
Bucs   6-9

There is a possibility of a three-way tie for second place in the division.  There is also a chance for two way tie between New Orleans and Carolina.

The first one is real simple.  If Carolina beats New Orleans and Atlanta beats Tampa then the Saints and Panther finish with 7-9 records, the Bucs finish 6-10.  Carolina would have beaten New Orleans twice during the season.  So the following would be true:

1.  Atlanta
2.  Carolina
3.  New Orleans
4.  Tampa

Now a little more complicated would be a three way tie.  If Carolina beats New Orleans and Tampa beats Atlanta all three teams would would 7-9.  So you have to go through the following to break the tie.

1.  Head-to-Head

Carolina beat New Orleans 2-0
New Orleans beat Tampa 2-0
Tampa beat Carolina 2-0

2.  Division records

A loss by New Orleans would make them 3-3
A win by Tampa would make them 3-3
A win by Carolina would make them 3-3

3.  Conference Records

A loss by the Saints would make them 5-7
A win by Tampa would make them 4-8
A win by Carolina would make them 5-7

Under this system Tampa is eliminated and then the tie breaker moves back between Carolina and New Orleans which Carolina wins head-to-head.

So the final result would be.

1.  Atlanta
2.  Carolina
3.  New Orleans
4.  Tampa

So basically anyway you cut it the winner of the Saints/Panthers game will be 2nd in the division.

Interesting.

I know we want to win outside of maybe sliding up one or two draft position the other interesting thing for me right now is what is happening in the other NFC divisions.

As we know your 2013 Schedule is based on the finish of your team.  By virtue of their win yesterday and the Tampa loss New Orleans cannot finish any worse that 3rd in the division.

And we know they will not be first.  So the Saints will travel to the NFC North next year and will have the NFC East visit New Orleans.

New Orleans will travel to either Chicago or Minnesota next year.  Still to be determined.
New Orleans will host either the Redskins, Cowboys or Giants.  Still to be determined.

Seems like the Saints play AT Dallas a lot here lately. It'd be nice to host the Cowboys.

Both teams have to finish 2 or 3.

More than likely the Saints will win and the Cowboys will lose which will put their seeding in the hands of the Giants.

I really look for Washington and NY Giants to win on Sunday which pushes Dallas to 3, so if the Saints win they will not play Dallas.

I agree. While it's only a one game difference, 8-8 looks pretty good after all the off season drama and the terrible start to the season.

I cannot root for the Saints to lose, but I will not be upset if they do.  It could mean the difference between picking 3-4 spots higher.

It also could mean playing Minnesota instead of Chicago in December next year or Dallas instead of the Giants next year in New Orleans.

The truth is this is the NFL who really cares how it looks.

One team is going to win the Super Bowl and probably another 3 teams are going to be happy with their seasons because they made progress.

Teams like Indianapolis, Seattle and Washington or Minnesota if they get in.  Everyone else is going to be disappointed in the way their season ended.

Teams like Atlanta, San Francisco, Green Bay and Chicago are not going to be happy with anything less.

I can honestly say that once you have had success then having a season end is all the same.  I still feel bad about the missed opportunity during the 2011 season.  Being minures away from another NFC Championship Game in the Dome.
