How do you fix this defense?

How do you fix this defense?

With the league rules being the way they are how many impact defenders are there out there? The Saints have spent draft pick after draft pick on defensive players to have them either not develop or just not perform.

I am being serious and don't have a clue.

Well....for starters...the defense would be alot better if they could tackle better...just in yardage alone we'd improve if that first tackle was made...I know it all starts up front...in the trenches....you wanna improve on the D-line...Cam Jordan and Aikeem Hicks were good D-line picks...need athleticism at LB...Vilma and Shanle aren't getting any younger...time for a changing of the guards so-to-say....that's where I'd began....

Invest in D line, then in LB'ers and then the secondary.

I can't think of one impact player you guys have on D.

We've send you Jon Beason for Sedrick Ellis, take the top DT available in the first round and a CB in the second. I would think you will be picking somewhere between 5-15, Hankins will probably be there, if not there are a couple nice DT's there, or you're in the range for a CB like Milliner or Amerson.

I know that our DL isn't that good right now, but its not like we haven't tried.  We have three 1st round picks on the DL and one FA that we paid a fair amount this year in Bunkley.  I think we will see continued investments in the next two or three years.

I disagree about our DL.  Yes Smith is older, but Ellis and Bunkley are good players.

Jordan and Galette and getting better every game.  McBride is a good backup.

The back half is serviceable.  As corners go, Greer and Robinson are solid DBs.

Jenkins and Harper have their strengths and their weaknesses.  Too me they take too many chances at times and get out of position.

The problem for me is where I have seen the Saints for years at the Linebacking Corp.  I do think that we are a little more solid with both Vilma and Lofton on the field, but Shanle cannot cover anyone.  And you drop more by play Hawthorne or Herring.  Half of the big rtuns given up on defense are caused by the WLB over pursuing the play and getting pushed passed the cut back lane.

-------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------

In the long term, we have to address the LBs and the defense.  I would spent the 1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks on the front 7 unless a special player is there or a SS in the 2nd round.

Depending on how this season finishes,

1st Round
If we draft 10-15 I would take a DE, drafting 16-32 I would take the best LB on the board.
2nd Round
I take another LB or a DT.  If I got my LB in the 1st then I may take another LB or a DT.
If a special SS is there then I think that way if I got my LB in the first.
3rd Round
Take another LB or DT

We need 2 LBs out of the first 3 picks.

You don't have any real playmakers on D, you have some solid contributors, but no one stands out, or needs to be singled out and handled. Atl is kind of in the same boat, but Abe is still a very solid DE, Witherspoon is growing into a very good MLB and DeCoud looks very good in the back. Tampa has a very good DL, if they stay on the field, solid LB's and a budding star in Barron.

I think the Saints' best defender is Sedrick Ellis and I feel he's underachieving. I'd love to trade Jon Beason for Ellis straight up. As much as I love Beason, Kuechly is the future of MLB for the Panthers and I don't know that Beason wants to slide back outside after being named an All Pro at Mike and being such an instumental guy on the D and the team as a whole.
