Rivera thinks Newton is pressing
Although the Panthers' vertical stretch offense relies on downfield throws, Rivera said Newton needs to learn there are times when shorter passes are better. “It's not just to advance the ball quickly. But it's to work the different levels, different options and different combinations that are there. They take this away, come down and get this,” Rivera said. “I think sometimes he holds it a little bit. He's waiting for that guy to clear, and sometimes it's too late. http://blogs.charlotte.com/pan...s-pressing.html

Re: Rivera thinks Newton is pressing
Is it just me or is Cam "pressing" because he doesn't have as many opportunities as he had last year? If he doesn't have as many opportunities, maybe we'd be better off runhing a pro-style offense instead of the read-option out of shotgun and we might actually be able to sustain some consistency. Just my opinion, but Rivera and Cam seem to be taking the brunt of the pain for the faults of an offense that was put in place by Chud. When you take multiple snaps out of the shotgun within the 5 yard line you end up looking like NCST, not an NFL professional football team. The only difference is that Mike Glennon made the throw....

Re: Rivera thinks Newton is pressing
I agree with what Rivera is saying. Cam is going for that impact play everytime. He doesn't go to his checkdowns often enough leading to far too many incompletions along with some of the sacks. Also agree that Chud needs to settle down and not try to outsmart himself with some of the playcalling. We need to find consistency with this team. That is what has been missing. We only play well every other week.
I do think this team will come out of this bye week more prepared and will better understand what they need to do to turn it around. We need to win the game against Dallas, period. That will be the first step to getting well.

The only difference is that Mike Glennon made the throw.... I agree with almost all of that. The only part I don't is that Rivera is taking heat from me because I expected a defense that can play fundamentally sound football and we are the worst tackling team in the N...F....l think about that one for a second. I agree though that the NEW offense isn't working. That doesn't go to say that it can't work and that it can't be better than ANY Pro Style offense but at the moment it has helped us to a 1-4 start and I have not seen evidence that things are looking up. It looks GREAT on paper though.

Re: Rivera thinks Newton is pressing
I find it interestsing that this subject had been posted twice...the first got 0 responses, and this has gotten immediate discussion. Suffice it to say, Newton does what Jake did in ugly losses...beat himself up too much! I cringed when Jake would throw that bomb and you could see his eyes closed...must be a QB thingy!

RE: Rivera thinks Newton is pressing
During the Seattle game Olsen ran short routes to give Newton a Option when the Rush came & for most of the game Olsen was open Yet the only time Newton throw to him was on the deep pass & I think Cam has Just needs to stop & look & as Rivera said take what the Def gives him also Why can't we get a real FB Heck I thought Tolbert was great at catching but he drops nearly everything that's thrown to him

Olsen is certainly deserving more touches...which he is solid at...and you could read the frustration on his face each time he was open and overlooked.

Re: Rivera thinks Newton is pressing
I really wish we'd use more 2 TE sets. That's the biggest difference in our offense between this year and last year IMO. I thought Barnidge looked great in the pre-season, and the coaches have praised him, but he's had nearly 0 opportunities since the season began. Our TEs were one of Cam's biggest boons last year.

Seems that this was one of the good things about Dom Capers and John Fox, they used the TE to spread out the D and also had damn good talent to do so. I had man love for Wesley Walls

Bingo its just a fact that most linebackers can't cover the top TE's in man coverage. We exploited that and zones all year last year. There was also not always some "action" that had to be executed before Cam could really get his eyes on the defense and see what they were doing. He knows how to read progressions.
