Defensive Effort Tonight

Defensive Effort Tonight

Let's give some credit to the defense. Contrary to what some may think, they played well overall tonight. Consider the following:

New England has scored an average of 26 points per game this season, with a lot of games being played without their top 2 offensive weapons in the passing game. They finally had a full staff of offensive threats against the Panthers tonight.

In the last 4 games, New England has averaged nearly 35 points per game. Only Cincinnati and the Jets have held New England to under 23 points this season. Now Carolina is in that mix as well.

Tom Brady came into this game with 15 days to prepare for the Panthers defense, after coming off a game where he threw 4 TD's, 0 INT's, and over 400 yards. He's a HoF QB and arguably the best to ever play the game.

Tom Brady had some ridiculous win/loss records on MNF in the past 10 years, as well as the same ridiculous win/loss records coming off a bye week.

And the Panthers held Tom to 3, count them, 3 first half points!! And only 20 points overall, with only 1 passing TD allowed. Against Tom frickin Brady!

That's impressive. Thank you defense!!!  cool

Re: Defensive Effort Tonight

In terms of Credit I think the bulk of it goes to Sean McDermott.  Overall, I liked the defensive gameplan.  The problem is that we tackled like 5th graders, MOST of the night.  When you do that you turn 2nd and 11 into 2nd and 7 and that is a HUGE difference.

I hononestly believe that if we would have made the easy tackles we would have come close to running away with this game. 3rd and long subjects Brady to our pass rush.  However, he avoided that most of the night with quick passes on 3rd/2nd and short.

Overall though the defense was good enough to win it.  I kid you not.  I said yesterday that if the offense could, someway somehow put up 24 points we should win this. It did and the D held just enough to make that enough.

By no means was this a game of defensive dominance like we've become accustomed to seeing...but despite Brady's moving the ball, he only threw 1 TD, and their rush came from the 1. 20 points is a tad high to give up, but they made the plays that counted most.

D has a lot of things to work on. Missed tackled, gap control, backside contain, coverage technique all need some work.

However, they showed up when it mattered and got the job done.

I guess you have to define dominance. Like the broncos and manning you're not going to keep Brady and NE out of the end zone. You need to score more than 20 points and have a great defensive effort to give yourself a chance to win. I thought the defense was amazing with the lone exception of noticing a lot of missed tackles tonight which is not the norm. They got a couple turnovers and didn't make things easy on Brady. Very very good game overall IMO.

That leg whip on Johnson had me mad enough to kill somebody. Completely bogus play and even more infuriating was the fact the refs completely missed it.

I got illegally chop blocked in college and it did some ligament damage that kept me out for a while.  I realize now that it was probably 5 or 6 years before my ankle was 100% healed from that.

So yeah the leg whip made me angry as well.  You win some you lose some but you don't try to take guys legs out when you get beat.  He apologized, but I'm not sure how well ligaments accept apologies.

The Panthers have consecutively beaten the 49ers and Patriots after each had a bye week. Impressive! Now follow through with a win at Miami.

Re: Defensive Effort Tonight

I have so many things to share with you all about the locker room banter last night, the pre-game excitement, and what was said about the "bad call." Suffice it to say that on this topic: You do not beat a team like the Patriots unless all squads are firing 101%! I was disappointed McD did not pressure Brady, as it appeared we might at the beginning of the game, but losing Johnson was scary, and moved a lot of guy on the side, but he came out looking defiant and a bit mad at the manner in which he was injured. Luke never stopped, and Mitchell through White tried so hard. A lot of guys telling White not to quit and that was the whole "D" game plan.

Saints are truly going to have their hands full when faced with this team we have!

The Miami game is the first real trap game I've seen this year.  IMO were it not for the scandal situation and losing 2 VERY good starters on that offensive line they are probably a 6 or 7 win team.

We're going to need to play out best.  Ron Rivera is going to have to make sure the guys are up to the task.

Because its New England that's what there taught to do.  He better get his checkbook ready!!

defense got pushed around at the point of attack in the 2nd half. however, they came through when they needed to. good to see us win a game with the defense doing just enough to win instead of the opposite. they rode the offense's coattails. three drives of 80+ yards, and touchdowns, in a limited possession game is clutch!

Just got in, and my brain is so full of images, sounds and unbelievable feelings from within BOA. I just read the last post and have to tell you, Luke was a bit mad with himself eek for some missed assignments, tackles and personal mistakes, but never felt he did anything but cover his man without a single grasp of the receiver's jersey, until maybe after the play was called, with an interception. There was nothing asked in the presser about the lack of real pressure on Brady in the second, but there was some discussion about being extra careful about being too aggressive towards Brady, since like Steve Smith, he can sucker you into a "roughing" call, or worse a weak defensive spot Brady can shorty route to. We were noticing Brady was often under two seconds on his releases, and that was what they expected, but in his audibles, Luke was trying to echo what he was hearing to try and throw off Brady...but a couple of times it was felt the guys were getting a bit off the mark themselves. BTW did you all get the very solid effort to get us OS a number of times, and how solid the "D" front held tight?
I got Johnson's gloves out of it, and will treasure them for the simple fact of which game they were used, and the conditions of his come back!

funny that CJ can get leg whipped and not get the call (Lord, I hope your MRI is clean). brady can get his facemask barely brushed and get 15 yards. the last play was just karma and mojo coming back to bite the cheats...i mean new england.

there were definitely missed tackles all night long. and i won't fault luke for much. it wasn't his greatest game, but his subpar performances are still masterful to watch, and better than most in the game today.

LOL that's what is so great about Luke. His subpar performance includes 12 tackles, being the defensive QB that held Tom Brady to 20 points, and being a key factor in holding Gronk to only 5 catches for 59 yards....

he also showed his skill going against vereen on that final drive. i believe it was a wheel route, and in any case luke looked to have been beaten, but closed the gap with his speed making it a tough play for vereen. brady threw a near perfect ball and luke still disrupted it just enough. i've seen those plays go for 6 time and again because backers just can't stay in step with the runningback. even if vereen catches it he still likely gets tackled right there.
