I think Cole is going to be a big key for us this season.

Star, KK, Cole and Edwards...the possibilities are endless.

Don't get me wrong JOAT, I think the line has potential. With good DT play we can have a great line. The expected starting line has the talent. But they have to use it every down. Without injury and everyone showing a high motor, yes we can. But I am not going to start making predictions or putting stock into those of others until we see the chemistry consistently on the field.

Johnson said something about 50 sacks (for himself), but I can see a bunch from this defense.... IF McDermontt will "turn the hounds loose"

It was Hardy who said he was going for 50 this year... and why not? He's got the physical skills to get hall of fame numbers for years, and it looks like the kid understands that if he attaches his high motor to his physical prowess, he will be the anti-Peppers for us here. Say what you want about the guy, but he doesn't take plays off. This line definitely has the potential to be the best in the league... that said, I believe our front seven has more talent than any of the other 32 nfl teams this year... if healthy... biggrin

I'm hoping he doesn't have to anymore.  This years defense reminds me an awful lot of the 2002 defense.  We had Peppers, Rucker, Kris Jenkins, and Brentson Buckner.  We didn't blitz very much at all because we got pressure with 4.  That's the recipe for the best defense IMO.  pressure with 4 and everybody else in coverage with an occasional extra blitzers to throw them off.

I think it is the strength this line shows. In years past we went for bulk, and we saw how that played out...Kemo, et al going down early and for extended periods.

I didn't mean blitz every time, but just go after the ball, instead of "read and react" or "bend but don't break" type of defense.

i don't mind "reading & react" as we get Pressure from our front four with Thomas Davis & Jon Beason as our OLB's we should be able to cover the Runs to the outside well BUT i still believe our secondary is better than most think & we will lose & win with our front 4 That said I'm wouldn't care if we only keep Cole,Star,Edwards & Short cut the rest or keep more DE's than DT's

Re: BEST DL In the NFL & Yea he said go & tell THAT

A top 10 D line ? Top 5 ? Some say number 1, I think on paper we could be the best. But I am leaning more towards top 5. When we went to the superbowl we had Kris Jenkins, Mike Rucker, Brenston Buckner, Julius Peppers, Al Wallace and Shane Burton. That was solid our d line in Johnson, Hardy, Edwards, and Star. Could be rivals to that starting lineup, Hardy says he wants sacks, Johnson says he wants sacks. They both say they want to break records and both have the skill set to do so. We have good depth behind them a lot of talent, Cole, Short, and maybe others we have not seen or don't know about that we will see in TC. this teams D line should help the secondary which I see Charles Godfrey being the "glue" that keeps the secondary together. Much like Mike Minter was for the Panthers during the Superbowl run, which made the suspect secondary better. I think our Secondary is better than suspect, but if you were to take all three levels of the Defense now and say which one sticks out as the weakness that other teams will attack with a good air passing game. It is as obvious as a stubbed toe or pimple on the forehead. The secondary is the one area, by virtue of a good D line with the potential to be top 5 or even the best it should hide most of the Secondaries faults as we hopefully should be able to get pressure with just rushing 4 at the Qb we have great Linebackers, a lot of people in the papers are writing our LB corps off just because we lost James Anderson to the Bears and they are saying can Davis stay healthy. Well health is a key part in success if you want to be a good defense but I tend to look at what has happened lately. We have acquired a better d line since Beason got hurt, Davis stayed healthy all season long. I think we have the real chance to see something special here in the carolinas. We have a Quarterback that can win with his arm and get the yardage needed with his feet if nothing is open on 3rd down. We have a real shot to be a playoff contender, Hardy and Johnson have to get over 15 sacks a piece with this kind of D line assuming it stays healthy. They both had 11+ last year with a much lesser D line then. I expect 15 from both of them but wouldn't be surprised if they both got 18+ Close games killed us we have to put our foot on the gas and don't stop. Cam has to have better stats than he did as a rookie if we are going to make the playoffs. And we need at least 1000 yards rushing from D lo or Stewart, whoever. I think we go 10-6 and make noise as a wildcard. We have the D line that can dominate the line of scrimmage now, pick your poison you can't double up on hardy and johnson because our D tackles will get sacks and you can't just expect us to stack 7, 8 in the box we have too stout of a D line to be blitzing like that. It will be a good year on both sides of the ball. Go Panthers

Our DB's  is the biggest question mark. But I think our Dline and LBers will take pressure off them. I do worry about Beason and Davis staying healthy. If one goes down, I think we have enough depth BUT if both go down, we might be in trouble.

I would hope that you, enemy, fans know that a new game has come to the Carolinas, IMHO. It is what we started out with, serious coaches, seasoned players and one hard-nosed  GM. We can sit here and debate Hurney all we want, but folks he helped establish a team of believers and rookies who wanted a chance. Nothing new there, maybe, but I believe guys WANT to play for us again...as in the inaugural seasons.

We are, hopefully not going to be snookered like that folly Observer ploy, well meant maybe, and will get down to some Championship play once again. It started with the D and will likely renew itself with the D.
