Charlotte gives early nod to Panthers stadium money

http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2013/01/16/378995 1/charlotte-city-council-backs-carolina.html

Looks like you and I are going to pay for those new TVs and escalators in BOA.  Jerry in it for the money, like I've always said.  The only way I would allow this is if the City were guaranteed that the organization would not be moved after Jerry croaks.  However, it appears Charlotte is bending over for the Big Cat.  Reports on WFNZ are coming out that Jerry has mandated the club sold 2 years after his death.  My opinion has always been that Jerry is in it for the money and not necessarily the product on the field as long as that money keeps flowing in.

People are out of work.  The city can't even pay cops and teachers, but I'll be damned if we aren't gonna raise taxes to put escalators in BOA for the fat asses that can't take the ramp.

Ehhhhhhh...

I mean, Jerry fired his sons for a reason...  Maybe he doesn't want them to have control of the franchise...  He might be doing us a favor...

Also, it's a 1% tax on food, hotels and that sort of stuff, right?  THat's better than making property taxes higher or anything like that...  I thought the city got us a good deal... noidea

Re: Charlotte gives early nod to Panthers stadium money

Well, I have heard almost every argument about Mr. Richardson being "in it for the money" and to read it twice on one paragraph makes me wonder what the point is. Could it be that Jerry Richardson is in it for the money?

This is different from Michael Jordan, Jerry Jones, and Robert Kraft how? Look at almost any club owner, and you'll likely find a guy who loves the sport and wants to own a club of his/her own, inherited a club, or needs a major tax write off. Jerry Richardson being one of the elite players, like Jordan, and now Elway who have the large to do it.

Now finding issue with organizational decisions is fair and logical, but to assume or insinuate they are in it for the money alone gets a bit edgy. In each case there is certainly a desire to pay all the bills and make a buck while doing so...that would be wrong, how?

Finally, having gone to every Eagles/Panthers game at the new stadium in Philly, I can tell you the escalators make traffic flow so much faster then the cattle ramps we have...though unlike Charlotte which only recently has been @ 2/3 capacity, Philly is packed to the hilt. So can the idea that escalators are just for "fat asses" because they DO work to get you out quick.

I thought that Mr. President got stimulus and other tax funded over-spending approved to hire more cops, pay the ones we have and see they all have teachers, yet it is they are the very ones that everyone says we cannot afford to pay. Makes you wonder where all the money went...like bridges for turtles,  water pool for University of Illinois Student Center ($4.4 Million), and sex studies for Carthaginian rats.

I intend to enjoy the new & improved BOA, and escalators shall be my transport of choice...BTW at 67, I wish I had an ass! eek

If they are going to finance these renovations with public money from the city of Charlotte can they at least rename the team the Charlotte Panthers?

And it's $125 million. I think if they were going to raise taxes they could find something more constructive to do with the cash than hand it over to a man worth a cool half a billion.

the point is Charlotte is in it for thr money and they are not going to do anything that will not get them more than they put in. This is why many cities do this because to lose the team would mean a massive loss of revenue for the city. your curiosity should be more towards how much the city will make than the team or JR himself. how about a shocking expose on citizens of the area who benefit from the presence of this team? JR is not nearly the only person benefitting from this.

many/most economists do not support subsidies to sports teams. they argue that a sports franchise brings little to no economic growth to a particular city. in particular the nfl makes the least economic sense to be subsidized because they play so few home games.  look it up.

I don't live in Charlotte or even the Caroline's so i honestly don't care I will never afford to pay the price they want to see a live game so if they move to LA it wouldn't change much for me

& if a City don't make much money off a NFL Franchise they are dang sure lots of citys wanting to keep them in & willing to support teams that want to leave

That was my bone with the Browns ownership of olde. That town suffered for decades without any serious post seasonal contention, save one or two years...they freaked when the ownership chose to move out of town...let's see loser team, fan loyalty, and owners don't GAD pull the team out anyway. I have already heard folks say they care less where the Panthers reside. The stadium is over a decade and a half olde...yet still looks good, but improvements creates jobs, enthusiasm and hopefully more attendance ( never guaranteed).

Cleveland was in the playoffs for nearly a decade straight in the 80's and into the early 90's. See George Schinn alla Hornets. Greed of one vs loyalty of many. A team can be the heart of a city. Maybe we're not there yet, but tell that to Cleveland, Pittsburgh, New Orleans, Kansas City, Indy....

my honest opinion is the NFL makes way to much money to beg for it to beg for tax money to build it's stadium's but this is happening in nearly every market so we aren't alone

I like that description of JR from the Charlotte Business Journal, in which Claire Fallon (D) said..."..he's (JR) a very imposing man...gets his point across...very direct!"

Just the man I have been describing here since my tour through BOA with him.

He is as good a tactician as anyone...so don't think he isn't using savvy business sense here.

I like this move. By kicking in some of the upgrade cost the city is getting the Panthers under contract to not move after JR is no longer the owner for what, 10 to 15 years. It's also a good enough deal for both sides to have a good footing for the new ownership to stay here post-Richardson. I love how JR started the Panthers by not putting it all on the taxpayers but it was time for the city to show that it wanted the Panthers in their town, now and in the future.

I understood that several months ago, the City went to the Panthers offering $$$ and not the Panthers to the City asking for $$$.

While I believe that JR might not "look a gift horse in the mouth", JR doesn't appear to me to be a man who relies on government. This just my guess, but when the City offered $$$, JR thought of a way to kill 2 or 3 birds with one stone. First, he gets $$$ for stadium improvements. Second, because of the improvements, the stadium is worth more, so he (or his estate) has more equity and more $$$. Third, I truly believe that JR wants the Panthers to remain in Charlotte and this is a way to lock in some future owner. JR's legacy is the CAROLINA PANTHERS, not the LA Panthers or some other ____ Panthers.

Not really. It's just the business side of it. Think of it as a gift from JR when he's gone. Who wouldn't want him for a granddaddy?
