Why is noboby thinking extend Gamble

Why is noboby thinking extend Gamble

Gamble is a top notch CB.  If we cut him, it will cost us 3 in bonus $$$.  We would save around 7Mil in cap space, but we are rolling with very young CBs again.  His contract only has 2 years left on it and he will be in that "over 30 group"

Everyone keeps saying we have no choice but to cut him.  Great chance to see what our new GM can by extending him.  Under Rivera, his game is back up there.  He could retire a Panther by playing a year or two more at CB with a later shift to S.  Similar to a Woodson/Barber...

A good extion could free up 5 mil and keep to notch CB on the roster.

Gamble/Norman/Thomas/Dockery  is not a bad group now that the youngsters have snaps under your thier belt.   Keeps a vet on the roster and gives us 6th and above CBs.  We can also focus on a S in the draft instead of CB.

Meh.

Gamble is good, no doubt. But IMO our secondary (at least CB's) did a pretty decent job while he was out this season. And if he restructures to take a bunch less money going forward, then I'd be happy to keep him. But we just don't have the money to keep all these high $$ players.

If we traded D-Will or someone else with a large contract in exchange for a draft pick in order to free up more money, then I'd be happy to keep Gamble. However, if we need to let him walk because we simply can't afford him, then I'm also happy with Thomas/Norman for now.

1) $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
2) $8-9M saved > $3-5M...
3) See one...

With that said, I like the idea of playing him at S and want to keep him...  However, Godfrey is now our FS.  Could you live with Godfrey back at SS?

His worth has increased, but our need to trim the budget is greater. I am certain he'll re-negotiate.

I have never been a fan of Gamble. Hes not a press guy hes a cover 2 guy.   And i think our young corners do just as good a job as Gamble.   And we need the cap space.

Re: Why is noboby thinking extend Gamble

I don't get the mindset of dropping a player when a position did "Pretty decent".

Gamble used to be a hard hitter, then he hit Culpepper, and that seemed to affect him mentally. He had that season with the hurt hand/wrist and he seemed to work on his coverage.
Since then he has been one of the top corners in terms of coverage, if not INTs.

A couple years ago he went 1v1 against:

Fitzgerald,
Colston twice
Megatron

Jennings
White twice
and held them all to respectable numbers. There is no reason to get rid of him if we can help it.

If we can find a way, keep him.

RE: Why is noboby thinking extend Gamble

The mindset is that if he is going to cripple the new GM's ability to build a winning football program, and his replacements were "pretty decent" (i.e.- not terrible), then it makes sense to get rid of him and move in a new direction.

I want this new GM to have all the flexibility in the world to build what he considers a winning team. If that means cutting old faces that we pay big bucks to, then so be it. We have enough young talent at multiple positions to make up for the loss of a few vets. And if the money freed up gives us the ability to get younger and better, then I'm all for it.
