Comparing our O llne to the 49ers
I think ours is almost as good. Dont laugh and hate on me yet....if you look closely here at the final 2012 O line rankings , yes SF is ranked as the #1 rush line, but way down to #29 pass blocking with 41 sacks allowed. Comparitively , ATL is way down at # 24 run blocking, but ranked #8 in pass blocking with only 28 sacks allowed. But this is the thing, it seems their rush rank is probably inflated due to CKs scrambles. as you see they are #12 in straight power rank, but # 1 at second level yards. Our run blocking is starting to come around, and call me a Homer, but I dont see a huge advantage for them. To me his says we can get front 4 pressure on CK so Nolan will not have to blitz so much which is not something you want to do to excess vs. CK, when people have to stay home and play contain. A SF Homer tried to preach to me they have the best O line in the league, but IMO the team we just beat is better than SF Seattle is ranked 3 rush and 20 pass with 33 sacks allowed ....am I nuts ?.... http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/ol2012

RE: Comparing our O llne to the 49ers
The only caveat to your theory birdy is that the 49er front 7 is infinitely better than the Falcons'. They have so much balance with their run game that I think it allows them to stay within C.K.'s comfort zone. As I mentioned earlier, Harbaugh is a stellar strategist and in-game adjuster... THIS game will be the most physical chess match we've seen in quite some time. I LUV Mike Nolan's style and approach as a counter, it's just that personnel-wise Atl. has a LOT of shortcomings "ON PAPER", but we are all familiar with the old saying... Also, I am more than a little concerned about the Falcons' special teams - particularly the punt unit... TGJr. is just deadly dangerous and if they get a cheap score off a deep return then this game could get ugly.

I worry about there front 7 vs our oline, smith and smith are some dang good players, very aggressive and can cause havoc.

Would to see a Smith v. Kaepernick comparison for the OL stats. One thing the Vick era taught me is that QB play can greatly influence the line.

Re: Comparing our O llne to the 49ers
Well one thing regarding their front 7, they hardly rotate them, less so than any team in the league...If we can get Turner cranked up like last week, we should be able to wear them down some in the 4th quarter ....

This is most likely because ILBs Bowman & Willis rarely come off the field birdy. Unlike ANY other defense in the league they don't sub-out on 3rd & obvious passing downs - they are THAT GOOD, equally adept in coverage AND stopping the run. It's an excellent strategy because you can't really exploit their sub packaging with hurry-up mode or catch them off balance personnel wise by mixing run/pass tendencies.

Re: Comparing our O llne to the 49ers
Consider this as well ....
The 49ers gave up 41 sacks in just 436 attempts or roughly 1 sack for every 10.64 attempts.
The Falcons gave up 28 sacks in 615 attempts or one sack for every 22 attempts

True, and in fairness they are forced to hold blocks much longer with CK...but I'm just trying to point out that the 49er O line is not the Redskins Hogs of the late 80s that the media is making them out to be, as of late, our O line is playing just as well as theirs....

RE: Comparing our O llne to the 49ers
To your point birdy, the pass blocking phase of OL play is the 49er weakness... I'm just not sure the Falcon front 4 can get through often enough to disrupt execution.

I think we can, but would look alot better with a healthy Abe...and yea, they are the #1 ranked rush line in the NFL, but Seattle was right behind them ...these guys are good , but not unbeatable is all Im saying, Seattle dominated them in the trenches on both sides of the ball a couple weeks ago, not that it has any bearing on Sunday. Was gratifying to hold Lynch to 2.9 but we had to leave their TE open all day to do it ....
