Draft Needs

Draft Needs

By no means am I a UGA homer.  Let me get that out of the way.  However, watching the SECCG yesterday, I couldn't help but not like the thought of Alec Ogeltree in our defense.

Let me give a few reasons:

Alec is one of the bigger physical specimens you'll see in the draft.  Hes very fast and very athletic for his size.  Our defense is built on athleticism and speed...not size.  We get the best of both worlds with Tree...speed and size.

We have to face Jimmy Graham twice a year.  Graham is a matchup problem for most linebackers.  Ogeltree being a converted safety as well as being 6'5, is a big, athletic body to put on Graham.

We have been running a lot of 34 looks on defense this year.  Imagine our inside backers being Spoon and Tree in our 34 look.

Now that I'm over who I'd like to see us pick in the first round, I'm well aware that we have quite a few other needs.  I wouldn't be upset whatsoever if we could land one of the Alabama O linemen...especially those guards...but they aren't likely to be there when we pick.

We need a DT but this draft is said to be very very deep in DTs.  We can get one of those in the 3rd or 4th round who can rotate in.  I'd like to see us get a 1 Gap nose guard type so we can really run some 34 looks plus have that wide body to put in on goal line situations and short yardage.

If we are going to continue to be a 34 multiple look team, I'd like to see us get one of those hybrid type OLB/DE types like Seattle took last year with the kid out of WVU.  Oregon is said to have one of those types this year and hes likely to be around when we pick.

Obviously I'm focusing on defense in the draft.  We need a RB but I don't see us "paying" for one in terms of a high pick unless something crazy happens like a guy really falls to us in the 2nd.  I think DT and CMS will have a focused plan in the first couple of rounds of DE, LB, and OL.

Thoughts?

Don't forget TE too, unless Tony G is rethinking retirement more, but I think at least one of TE or RB will be addressed in free-agency.

Was thinking the same thing about Ogletree last night, that he'd be a great pick for us.

But whatever position TD decides to draft first, I'm sure they'll have a plan to address the other needs.

See if I can get a serious answer here-

Who would y'all mock to the Panthers with the 3rd and 35th pick?

I'll answer your question too, but not before admitting I haven't watched much of y'all this year.

First real issues I see are at the LOS. Interior OL and DE. Abe is old but still productive but there's really no other threat at the other three spots. A DE would be a solid add, as well as solidifying the interior OL to give Ryan more time to find those receiving threats. I have no clue what your cap situation looks like, but you may be able to get one or the other in FA.

Samuel is a good cover guy, but it's obvious he doesn't make to tackle, especially non-WR's, so a physical CB would be a good add.

I think we should go DE in the first round this year.  There is a ton of talent at the position in this year's draft and we could score a top 15 talent DE at the 32nd pick.

Ogletree really came into his own the end of this year. I am not sure where that type of year puts him in the draft, but he played some very sound football coming down the stretch for UGA. I would dang sure like to have him.

DE\OL\RB are some areas of need.

JOAT

Offhand Id say you guys have issues on OL and DL and CBs. LBs are servicable though. Id take a WR in the top 3. No top picks on WRs in this draft though.

Id say OL\DL with 3 and whoever you didn't take with the 3 pick go with that spot at 35. You guys could use a WR as well.

Joat, you have been watching enough football to know rebuild jobs start on the lines.

Would love to have him, but I'm with the consensus here, I think best pass rushing DE  or monster DT #1,  OL #2, RB # 3 ,  try to find a sleeper TE and a WR/PR or CB/PR later, would fill some real holes.......noidea

Absolutely and I also solemnly believe that the games are ultimately won and lost in the trenches.

I'd rank the Panthers biggest needs as:

1. DT
2. RG
3. FS
4. WR
5. TE- pass catching type

With this I'd draft Star or Hankins in the first to solidify the interior DL as our DE's are playing exceptionally well. In the second it'll come down to value at OG and WR, for me. We have no third right now and in the fourth I'd look for whatever I didn't get in the second.

Gross is getting old and LT is a possible need, but not immediate but with someone like Luke Joekel ,<sp?> on the board as a potential franchise LT it may be hard to pass on him.

Only positions we need no help at, IMO, are RB, LB, QB, DE and CB if Gamble comes back.
