Riled-up Ryan: Jets going to beat Patriots

Leave it to the Patriots to bring out the old Rex Ryan.

The Jets coach showed some of the bluster he has hidden this year while answering a question about the Patriots, whom the Jets play Sunday in Foxborough, Mass.

“I want them to know, and they know, that I think we’re going to beat them,” Ryan said. “I don’t buy into all that other stuff. I recognize they’re a great football team and [Bill] Belichick is a great coach. I’ve never once said that he wasn’t. But we’re not going to back down or concede anything.”

Ryan has toned down his public statements since the end of last season, when he felt some of the things he said put too much pressure on his team. The juices always get flowing around the Jets when the Patriots arrive on the schedule.

RAISING THE BAR: Jets coach Rex Ryan is channeling his old persona. Yesterday, discussing Gang Green’s battle Sunday against the Patriots, Ryan said, “I want them to know, and they know, that I think we’re going to beat them.” Jeff Zelevansky
RAISING THE BAR: Jets coach Rex Ryan is channeling his old persona. Yesterday, discussing Gang Green’s battle Sunday against the Patriots, Ryan said, “I want them to know, and they know, that I think we’re going to beat them.”

Both teams enter this week’s game at 3-3, tied along with the Bills and Dolphins on top — or on the bottom, depending on your view — of the AFC East.

“They’re going to get our best shot,” Ryan said. “We know we’re going to get theirs. It really doesn’t matter who says what, but we’re going to be ourselves. We’re coming up there to take our swing. We’ll see if we land that punch to win the game.”

The Jets are 1-3 at Gillette Stadium under Ryan, the one victory coming in their dramatic playoff win two years ago. After that game, the feeling was the Jets had narrowed the gap in the division, but the Jets finished 8-8 last year and missed the playoffs while the Patriots went 13-3 and made it to the Super Bowl.

The Patriots are a focus around the Jets all year long, not just the two weeks they face each other. New England has won the division in nine of the last 11 seasons and every year Ryan has been the head coach. The Jets have finished second each year.

“I’ve never stopped thinking about the Patriots,” Ryan said. “That’s a team that we have to beat to win our division and obviously Buffalo and Miami are improved. [I’m] not taking anything away from them, but the team that’s won our division since I’ve been the head coach here is always New England. That’s the one you have to beat for sure. You think about them, you even build your roster sometimes in trying to compete, trying to beat this team. You’re always thinking about them.”

The Patriots are coming off a stunning 24-23 loss to the Seahawks on Sunday, and Ryan was asked if he expects to get an angry Patriots team coming off that defeat.

“I don’t think there’s any doubt,” he said. “I’ve got news for everybody, we always get their best. They always get ours. We’ll see if our best is better than their best on that particular day. ... They know that we know we have to knock them off for us to get to where we want to get to, or anybody in our conference ... they have to beat New England.”

Despite the Patriots’ unusually average 3-3 record, the Jets know New England can’t be taken lightly.

“I am [shocked the Patriots have lost three times],” tight end Dustin Keller said. “They’re usually a lot better than that at this time of year. That could turn around at any moment. We have to play our ‘A’ game, otherwise we won’t be able to pull it off.”

Jets vs. Patriots

And the mouth turns again. Imagine if they actually beat the Patriots. Hopefully the offense can score 50 because the coaching and defense will make Sanchez like Joe Willie Namath if not Dam Marino and have his best game this year.

Re: Riled-up Ryan: Jets going to beat Patriots Post Rating (1 vote)

I dunno. I don't think Rex said anything all that inflammatory this time. All he basically said is "the Pats know I think the Jets will win." Compared to remarks he made in the past, this is remarkably tame and sane.

If the secondary can get it together, they could have a field day against the Jets. Sanchez is averaging 1 INT per game and his decision making looks as bad as ever. That's a big "if" of course. They'll contain Tebow well enough, like they did last season. And they'll stuff the Jets run game. Which also means if the secondary doesn't get it together this week, Sanchez could have the best game of his career.

On O, the Pats need to run, run, run. That keeps Brady out of the dirt and sets up play action, where he's lethal. If McD reverts to his pass-happy ways, Rex's D has shown they'll make plays and things could go bad in a hurry.

I'm hoping the Pats play a full sixty minutes of football. For once.

Boss - With the way NE has played this year (Dr. Jeckyl & Mr. Hyde) Brady et al. may have to put up 50 to win. Same secondary, same results. The golden arm must continue to work it's magic.biggrin

Re: Jets vs. Patriots

I`m surprised to see Chung on the limited participation list-the way he`s always getting hurt, I thought for sure he`d be on the non partake list. I`m also surprised to NOT see Lloyd on any of the lists-I thought for sure he had separated his shoulder the way he landed on that diving catch. Great News he`s ok biggrin

tedyboy FYI  Brady has the Golden Arm this week - Magic: The arm that threads the needle as opposed to what we saw last week, balls bouncing before they even got to the intended receiver. Lloyd's pass late, a bit overthrown. A great catch but OOB. Toss' over the middle that went a way over the outstretched arms of the receiver. Intentional groundings proving costly.
Now tedyboy, ask yourself. Will it be Dr. Jeckyle or Mr. Hide??  biggrin

Since we're all -3 it's hard to say this is a "must game" ... but we are approaching mid-season. How any more games before THEY ALL become must games??? With the entire division stumbling along, - it won't be long until ANY team with "a 3 game win streak" pulls away.

You start to wonder when this team will start taking advantage of this schedule they where given. The bottom line is this team is better overral then both the cardinals and the seahawks and they loss both those games. They are underachieving to this point even with a shaky defense.Too much inconsistency at times from TB this season.I hope they get on a roll starting this weekend.

Re: Official game thread Jets vs Patriots

‘Possibility’ Jets may use Tebow as RB vs. Patriots

  • By BRIAN COSTELLO
  • October 19, 2012
.

Tim Tebow has more roles than Kevin Bacon. - Add another one to the Jets backup quarterback/wildcat specialist/personal protector/lightning rod. Jets coach Rex Ryan did not rule out the idea of Tebow playing running back Sunday against the Patriots.
.

“That’s a possibility,” Ryan said. “The thing about Tim being a football player like we’ve always talked about, Tim can ... by playing quarterback, he knows all the positions. So can you plug him in at running back? Can you plug him in at tight end? I think the answer is yes.”
.

Now, it should be noted that if Ryan was asked if Tebow could fly the team plane he would probably say, “That’s a possibility.” Ryan rarely rules anything out.
.

UPI
.
GET BACK THERE: Rex Ryan did not rule out the prospect of Tim Tebow being uses as a running back on Sunday when the Jets take on the Patriots. - According to a source, Tebow will not be lined up as a traditional halfback, but could see more carries out of the Wildcat formation this week or in a shotgun formation alongside quarterback Mark Sanchez.

.

An increased role for Tebow Sunday makes some sense when you consider the Jets’ health issues at the position. Bilal Powell will not play after separating his right shoulder last week, according to a source. Joe McKnight most likely won’t play after suffering a high left ankle sprain last week, but the team has not yet ruled him out, a source said. - Ryan wouldn’t comment on the status of either Powell or McKnight, but neither player practiced yesterday. Powell was not even on the field as practice began. McKnight did some light work with the trainers off to the side. He said after practice he plans on playing.
.

If Powell and McKnight are both out, the only traditional running backs the Jets will have are Shonn Greene and Jonathan Grimes, who they signed three weeks ago off the Texans’ practice squad. Grimes was active against the Texans two weeks ago but only played special teams. The rookie from William & Mary has yet to get a carry. .... The Jets had their best rushing day of the season last week, gaining 252 yards on the ground. Greene had a career-high 161.
.

Speculation began Tuesday the Jets could use Tebow at running back this week when the Jets had quarterback Kevin O’Connell in for a visit. It makes no sense for them to sign a fourth quarterback unless they are thinking of playing Tebow mainly at running back and wanted to move Greg McElroy into the backup quarterback role.

The Jets brought no free agent running backs in for workouts this week, probably because they view Tebow as a third running back.
.

Tebow did not speak to reporters yesterday, but on Wednesday he said there had been no talk of moving him to running back. Several Jets were amused when told what Ryan said, speculating that he is probably just trying to give the Patriots something to prepare for.
.

Ryan said he believes Tebow has the skill set to play the position. - “I think his skill set would be more based on power,” Ryan said. “He’s not going to be a blazer compared to other running backs, but he’s got power.” - That would be same skill set of Greene, the starting running back. So wouldn’t the Jets rather have a speed back to complement Greene?
.

“It’s not like we’re going to put [Antonio] Cromartie back there,” Ryan said. “We’re good. We have some good backs. I’m comfortable with our running back situation.”

Tebow has rushed for 64 yards on 18 carries this season, but all of those rushes have come from the Wildcat formation. He has lined up as a fullback on a few occasions and gone out for a pass. He also has lined up next to quarterback Mark Sanchez in the shotgun formation and been a blocking back. Greene said he welcomes Tebow at running back.
.

“If we can get a win like that, then that’s fine with me,” he said.

Offensive coordinator Tony Sparano left the door open to Tebow as a running back when asked about the possibility.
.

“There’s possibilities in a lot of things,” Sparano said. “We’ll see.”

Unfortunately, I think Sanchez will light our secondary up after we stuff a few of their runs.  I predict an early lead followed by a comeback and a close game.  For me, it's the AFC Championship game over again - we stop their running threat and make their QB beat us, but their QB nearly beats us.

Re: Official game thread Jets vs Patriots

Yeah. Pats have the 5th best rushing D, I doubt the Jets will have much luck on the ground. Especially if Hightower is back.

The Jets have the 28th ranked running D, they were 31st until last week against Indy. So even without Bolden, the Pats should be able to run effectively. Vereen may finally be pressed into action. Hernandez will likely see action as a RB as well.

Hopefully McD uses a lot of run plays, otherwise the D is on the field a lot with Sanchez forced to throw. And I don't want to see Sanchez get 400 yards on Sunday.

This would be a really good game for the DB's to wake up. Sanchez is mistake-prone and he's without his #1 WR. If they suck again, the boo's will rain down from the stands. I'd start Chung/McCourty at S and Dennard/Dowling at DB. Can that really be any worse than the usual starting line-up?

Re: Official game thread Jets vs Patriots

In reality, both teams are 3 & 3. Doesn't that make the outcome a pick-'em? Sure New England, at least according to the injury reports, has the upper hand. But didn't they have it last week too? I was certain BB was going to release at least one secondary player. I was wrong.
Dok may be correct in that the players are much better than they have shown this year and that their coaching has been way off the mark.
Are we about to see some trickery on Sunday? Two QB's in the line up.  Hey, you tell me.

Great, now Kyle Love is hurt. Not a flashy player, but he's solid.

Only chance they have is for the front 7 to get to the QB. Once the ball is thrown, it's 20+ yards.

BB's dog house is idiotic. The only way young players will learn is to play (well, except for the DB's, anyway).

Ridley will be fine.
