Re: ROSTER CUTS - Down To 53

I'm seeing on Twitter that Hoyer, Koppen, and Ihedigbo all cut.

They did try to trade Hoyer but no takers. He was due $1.9M this year and feeling is that Mallett wasn't that much worse to justify the expense.

Ihedigbo being cut likely means Ebner makes the roster.

Hmmm ... 'Skins cut RB Tim Hightower.

Miami cut ex-Pat Gary Guyton and ... *four* WR's.

So there are 2 starting caliber WRs left. Very interesting. I guess the tightends and running backs are going to be very active in this offense.

I think Edelman can at least match Branch's performance. I've seen rumblings on Twitter that the Pats may add a couple players too. And don't rule out Branch/Gaffney coming back after Week 1 either.

I am too, - Mallet might have potential, - but lacks much experience. No question that at nearly two million bucks Hoyer was an expensive back-up to carry. Hope we don't REALLY need to find out the hard way if he's ready, ...

Re: ROSTER CUTS - Down To 53

Hoyer didn't look good at all in the preseason so the only thing surprising about his release is that it means they are going with only 2 qb's on the roster.  I guess Edelman will be the emergency QB?  That does leave one extra roster spot for another position though.

Me either.  Not a huge surprise I guess, but I figured he'd stick one more year.

I thought he looked "ok" - but the year Brady went down against KC, whatshisname had a truly lousy preseason & took them to an 11-5 season.

That's true.  I still remember Jamie Dukes lambasting the Pats all through the preseason because they hadn't done anything to acquire a quality backup to Brady.

Sounds like Hoyer's release may be a combination of Mallett playing better plus Hoyer's salary being quite high for a 3rd stringer.

When they keep reporting all training camp on how Lloyd was catching everything that TB threw to him and how they were scratching their heads over some of the catches he made, I kinda thought maybe Branch wasn't going to make it.

Branch was the only consistent reserve WR through camp.  This move was more about other things the WRs can do... Hence, we believe Edelman is safe.

Re: ROSTER CUTS - Down To 53

From Boston.com

Greg Bedard's analysis on Branch: This was a surprise only after the Patriots released Jabar Gaffney and Donte' Stallworth. After that, you figured it would be worth it to keep Branch around just for leadership and experience, and the fact that he's still a reliable target in this system. Even then, I had him as a game-day inactive. Outside of New England, Branch has next to no value. He's fine in a 10-yard box, but is limited outside of that. That's why he didn't get any action on the free agent market. Right now the Patriots only have three legitimate receivers who can play right away: Brandon Lloyd, Wes Welker and Julian Edelman. Expect them to looking for a trade or on waivers for another receiver, preferably one that knows the Josh McDaniels' system from Denver or St. Louis. It's not a huge need because the Patriots are probably going to play with two WRs most of the time with Lloyd, Welker, Aaron Hernandez, Gronkowski and a RB. Or one WR, three TEs and a RB. Also, Shalise Manza Young is hearing the Patriots are on the lookout for FBs. McDaniels wants one.

Rookie WR Jeremy Ebert informed of his release, per source. Practice squad candidate.

Source: Jeff Tarpinian released by Patriots
Posted by Jeff Howe at 6:07 pm

Linebacker Jeff Tarpinian has been released by the Patriots, according to a source.

Tarpinian signed with the Pats last season before landing on injured reserve with a head injury. He played well against the Giants in the preseason finale and figured to be a candidate to fill in for Dane Fletcher. Tarpinian would be a practice squad candidate if he clears waivers.

The Patriots have made 13 cuts and have nine to go before the deadline.

Wouldn't be surprised to see some more moves in the coming days. A whole lot of decent players are now available.

Overall pretty interesting. Bolden made it and Branch did not.

Glad to see Ebner made it - he's gonna be fun to watch develop.

Re: ROSTER CUTS - Down To 53

Ok so unless I'm forgetting someone, the Pats now have a mere 4 WR's on the roster in Welker, Lloyd, Edelman, and Slater.  And Slater isn't really a WR.  I know they have two TE's who will get targeted a lot, but that's really leaving the cupboard bare at the WR position.  They have to be either getting ready to sign someone that got waived or to bring Branch and/or Gaffney back after week 1.

I'm sure they'll pick up a WR within in the next few days, or as you said bring back someone who was cut. Probably gonna wait to see who is available.

Re: ROSTER CUTS - Down To 53

AHern is as good as most starting WR's, so factor that in as well.

But, honestly, if they go back to a balanced attack - with the RB's heavily involved - I think they'll be fine and maybe better than before. Under O'B the Pats O was so friggin' predictable. Teams will now have to defend the run against the Pats.

Please, no throws to Slater. I'd rather put Ebner out there as a slot receiver and take my chances than see another long bomb to Slater. Love him on ST ... as long as he isn't supposed to catch the damn ball.

When all 4 TE's are healthy, this is gonna be a beefy offense to handle. "Empty backfield" could mean Lloyd, Welker, and 3 TE's - there will be a mismatch somewhere with that.

Still, wouldn't be surprised to see Branch come back after Week 1 if they don't sign someone first. Also wouldn't be surprised if they signed one of the FB's that got released today - there were a bunch.

Re: ROSTER CUTS - Down To 53

The TE is only a mismatch when there is the threat of the run. If you go with an empty backfield then you lose the advantage of Hernandez being a receiving threat. Lloyd will be a nice addition, but if you have no other threat that can catch a ball other than in the 5-10 yard range then you pretty much take away all that Lloyd does.

Welker, Edelman, and Hernandez are all slot type guys that operate inside the numbers and are not used to stretch the field. Good teams should have no problem clogging up the middle of the field and sending a safety over the top to help with Lloyd and shut the Pats down. The Patriots must make teams defend sideline to sideline as well as goal line to goal line. Unfortunately this team right now is set up to operate mostly in the middle of the field and may be easily shut down by the better defenses.

Re: ROSTER CUTS - Down To 53

Tom Brady & Co. EASILY shutdown??  I think not!!

I'd be amazed if they just cut Branch because his # came up in a release lottery.

The Pats have a plan, I'm sure of it. Why? Because nobody else comes close to their total success over the last dozen years!! I believe!!

They're not going to just become careless overnight.

We don't see the big picture as fans, and we never will, because it takes twelve hours a day, seven days a week with a think tank of years of experience of both playing and coaching at the NFL level to be able to know what's going on.

And, who's to say that he won't be back at some point. There's still time for adjustments on their roster.

Mind you, these ramblings are just my opinions, and what better place to state them than this awesome sight.

Re: ROSTER CUTS - Down To 53

I do think BB/McD have a plan here. The focus on RB's and TE's, plus the play selection seen in pre-season and camp, all point to a return to something more like the Pats O that won championships. For the last few years the O has (a) relied on Brady throwing on almost every down, (b) been unable to control the clock in the 4th, and (c) completely lost the time-of-possession battle. You won't win titles with that, and Brady isn't getting any younger.

If this is the new O, the Pats won't be as exciting an offense to watch. It'll be methodical - like killing someone with a ball-pean hammer. But in the 4th a 7 or 10 point lead will be pretty much game-over.

The Patriots are planning to re-sign several players who were with them in training camp, and one agreement has already been confirmed -- fullback Eric Kettani.

Meanwhile, agreements were in the works with tight end Alex Silvestro, offensive tackle Matt Kopa and linebacker Jeff Tarpinian, but those players were still awaiting confirmation that they had not been claimed by other teams.

traded Greg Salas to New England
today. OCJosh McDaniels is familiar with the
Hawaii product, from his time in St. Louis.

Re: ROSTER CUTS - Down To 53 (FINAL UPDATE)

Salas was a highly productive WR out of Hawaii, statistically speaking.  But the caveat to that is that Hawaii's offense has always generated ridiculously inflated stats that don't often carry over to the pros for the players involved.  He did have a lot of positive reviews, prior to being drafted.  McD had him last season and must have liked him.  I seem to recall him being better suited as a slot receiver though, kind of like every other receiver the Pats bring in.

Now Schefter is reporting the Pats have released LB Bobby Carpenter.  I have to admit I'm getting confused.  They are cutting all their depth.  They better hope no LB's or WR's get hurt this year.

Re: ROSTER CUTS - Down To 53 (FINAL UPDATE)

UPDATE… 5:25 PM

Stunners keep coming. The Pats, per Schefter again, have parted ways with veteran LB Bobby Carpenter. A move was needed on the 53-man roster to accommodate both Tennant and Salas.

Meantime, our buddy Bedard adds that the practice squad is getting a receiver: Kent State product Sam Kirkland(6-0, 190), previously with the Washington Redskins. That leaves just four open spots on the p-squad as of this hour
