You guys were robbed!

Just my opinion, Vrabel and Cassel for a 2nd round pick? Wow!

Posted: 2/28/2009 4:10 PM

Really don't think so

I know  it looks like that but NE by franchising him turned a comp pick at the end of the 3rd round into a top 3 pick in the second .  Not to mention putting them now 18 mill under the salary cap  which they can now go out and use in free agency . I do not see the downside here  NE would have never kept that KC high 1st rounder they would have traded down because keeping it would have cost them more money then they were paying cassel

Yes we were so robbed

We traded a guy who was so bad in pre season last year that many wanted him cut along with a slow aging 34 year old linebacker for essentially a late first round pick(#34th overall).

Cassel could be another Derrick Anderson for all we know. We also now have a ton of money to spend.

Good luck with whatever terrible team you cheer for

Very mature post!

I bet you didn't feel that way about those two last season did you? No of course not. Michfn1 I appreciate your reasoned reply. I can very well see the points you made and agree to a great extent.  To the other poster, you obviously know nothing about football so I will not try discussing it with you. I guess if Brady were to ever leave or be traded to another team he would be worthless too huh? Incidently, I am from Matt Lights hometown. I remember watching him play as a skinny kid. He is a great guy who has done a lot for the high school here. Good luck to the true Pat fans who appreciate good players.

Here is another thought. Vrable was going to be released and the Patriots would have incurred a cap hit. So they trade him and alleviate the cap hit. Cassel is traded for the 34th pick in the draft. Im pretty sure that the Patriots didnt just get stupid over night. Lets see how Vrable does this year before we say we got robbed. If he continues his decline then its a good job of getting rid of the salary cap hit. If he has a 9+ sack season then we will have to scratch our heads.

I agree that's most likely what was going to happen, that they were going to cut him anyway.  It makes sense to get rid of him now if you can get something for him.  I was saying that even before the Cassel news came up.  The problem is they didn't get anything for him.  I just think if you're going to trade him you should be able to get something for him even if it's just a conditional pick.

Re: You guys were robbed!

It's easy to say the Patriots were robbed because they only got a second round pick. Talking to an insider before the trade was announced he said he bet Cassel would be traded to KC and also mentioned what if Vrabel was going to be released this year? (Good point Viny).

It is the third pick in the second round, as mentioned it's like having a low first rounder without having to pay first round money.

They are now 18 million under the cap. Some can be used to sign Wilfork again, some can be used to perhaps sign a couple of more free agents. And they now have more flexibility in the draft. 3 second round picks. Lots to talk about..

Re: You guys were robbed!

For the record, I think it was a smart move by both teams. You didn't need them, we do. We now have a semi-experienced QB and a defensive leader to help install a new system. You get to go out in to free-agency and plug some of your holes. I also agree that the 3rd pick in the second round is a fantastic place to be.

Good Trade in my Opinion

Chiefs fan here I think the deal is fair for both sides.

RE: You guys were robbed!

I think its a good deal for both, That 3rd pick in the 2nd is a great place to be, I think we will use it smartly. I mean we got a 2nd for a 7th when you break it down. Cassel had a good year for his first time as a starter, but they had to bring him along with baby steps to get him to where he ended the season. Will it continue, time will tell. I hope it does. As far as Vrabel he probably would not had made the final cut this year, so this is a good way of letting him go with some dignity and I think he will help KC establish a how to win attitude so it will be good for both teams. But he will always be one of my favorite Pats. Now we have some $$$$ to work with and we can get younger and faster which is what we need to do. Remember the Patriots always know what there doing, sop lets not be to quick to say they got robbed, it will help both teams for sure.

RE: You guys were robbed!

A year ago you'd be called insane if you predicted this. A #34 for Cassel in this draft is...probably about as good as the 31 in last years draft. Cassel was an unforeen gift.

Other teams were reported to offere somewhat more.  Aparently they worked with Cassel to get this done and he wanted KC.  Vrable also played along since he could have been released and aslo probably wanted KC.

Cassel started out with baby steps but by the second half was making his own strides.  IMO he'll do very well.

Re: You guys were robbed!

I gotta say, initially this trade made me sick. However, now I'm starting to see some pretty good reasons for why it happened and why we received "just" the #34 pick in the draft. I agree, picking 34th is like picking in the 1st round without having to pay a 1st rounder. Looks like a pretty smart move here.

As far as Mike Vrabel goes, he'll always be one of my all-time favorite Patriots. I will never forget the times he lined up at TE in those SBs and caught those TDs. From that first SB on, I was a fan of his for sure. I believe he will be rewarded for his excellence here and inducted into the Patriots Hall of Fame one day.

Morpheus states: ~ ". . .  3 second round picks. Lots to talk about.. . "  Sure is.
2ND. round money, available CAP and team needs.
Does not appear BB is going to chase any front line starter in FA or UFA @ CB or ILB.
Seems to boil down to the draft. He has at least one or two RB's he may be considering dealing. I don't know.
You experts over on the draft Board seem to have a handle on exceptional talents the NEP should consider.
We'll see. time will tell.

Good trade for Pats. Flipped a 7th for a 2nd.
Got salary flexibility to sign 2-3 players.
Pats can easily get 3-4 starting players for a backup qb who would have played 0 downs.

Re: You guys were robbed!

Like I said yesterday while everyone was flipping out because NE didn't get the moon and stars for Cassel and Vrabel, one side did not slicker the other side. Pioli and Belichick don't strike me as men wh are stupid or naive. They know each other and both know NE's needs and wants. They each knew what they wanted and needed and hammered out a deal without posturing and BS. It's a win-win for both sides.

RE: You guys were robbed!

It looks like a fair deal. It works out better for the Chiefs but that is more related to the fact that they don't have any talent on the roster. This upgrades them now.

The 2nd round pick is a little weak this year. Will be mid 2nd round talent available then.
