Vrabel traded to Chiefs

Per NFL Network... can anyone verify this?

Re: Vrabel traded to Chiefs

Schefter is reporting Vrabel is in KC for a physical.  That's the only place I can find it at this point.

New England’s Pro Bowl linebacker Mike Vrabel is in Kansas City undergoing a physical so that he can then be traded to the Chiefs. General Manager Scott Pioli is reaching out to bring in a player familiar with his system, and New England is a willing trade partner.

Re: Vrabel traded to Chiefs

If this is true, the starting OLBs at the moment are Adalius Thomas and Pierre Woods, both of whom are coming off injury. Good thing there are some good look OLBs in the draft.

Any guess what they got for him? 4th rounder? I mean he was a defensive captain and key piece of the D...but he was also in decline and could have been in for a reduced roll this year.

Good trade for Pioli to get a guy who can teach the young KC guys both the Patriots defense AND the "Patriot Way".

Re: Vrabel traded to Chiefs

Wow. And Paxton is going to the Broncos. I have to believe that the Vrabel trade will be a good deal for the Pats - probably they worked it out with SP before he departed. It's good for Vrabel too, lets him set the tone and be leader for the Chiefs - SD's reign in the AFC-W is coming to a close soon.

Re: Vrabel traded to Chiefs

I think this story in the Herald today has something to do with Vrabel being traded there.

Re: Vrabel traded to Chiefs

We all love Vrabel but if confirmed this would make sense for the Pats.  He doesn't have that many years left in him and if they can get some value for him in picks or another player, then it is wise to pull the trigger now.

As for the OLB position, this leads me to believe one or more of the following:

1. They are extremely happy with Woods and Crable

2. They are hoping to, and feel they will be able to, draft somebody to fill the position

3. There could be something to the rumors of a trade for Peppers.

Do you think this could be a Vrabel for Waters swap?  Very interesting...

Re: Vrabel traded to Chiefs

It is sad to see Vrable go, but he could not get it done rushing the passer last year and there were no stories about an injury.

I hope this is the continuation of the youth movement at linebacker.

They only gave Woods a second round tender, so they cannot be "that" high on him.

No, my take is that Pioli is trying to take control of the locker room.  My guess is that are picks involved.

Trading Vrabel saves the Pats about $3M in cap space.

Done deal. No mention of what the Pats got yet, though.

Re: Vrabel traded to Chiefs

Its killing me not knowing what is coming back for Vrable.  But we are talking about a trade between Scott Pioli and BB.

we might never actually find out.  It might take the CIA to get involved to actually get some info.

This i sinteresting. Waters is a pro bowler. Tony G would look good here as well.  Then again I wonder if draft choices are involved.

ESPN reporting draft picks...

Re: Vrabel traded to Chiefs

Hey guys, just wanted to throw my 2 cents in...

It's most likely a 4th or 5th rounder. There is no way it would be for Waters straight up. Waters isnt going anywhere. He had a crybaby moment because someone finally told him our team sucks and he got offeneded. The general feeling here in KC is that Waters needs to get over himself.

Todd Haley told him "22 guys off the street could win 2 games." The truth hurts sometimes. Waters needs to realize we were awful last year and need to make serious changes in personel and the team needs an attitude adjustment after Herm's era of no accountability or discipline.

Anyways, hopefull Vrabel can bring some much needed leadership to our team.

nothing higher than a 4th is my guess.

Re: Vrabel traded to Chiefs

Lots of chatter online that this could be the opening part of a larger deal with the Patriots and Chief, possibly involving Cassel and draft picks.

Thanks for the insight.  Things can only get better after Herm.

Re: Vrabel traded to Chiefs

I'm wondering if this would prevent a Cassel to KC deal, unless the Chiefs were giving a player back to the Pats.  They sure don't want to trade half their draft away to the Pats.  Maybe if the Pats gave them Cassel plus one of their own picks in exchange for a higher pick from the Chiefs, they'd be open to that.

Speculation I have seen is Vrabel, Cassel, and the Pats #1 for KC's #1 and #3.  Of course that is just internet talk, so who knows.

Re: Vrabel traded to Chiefs

If that were to be the trade, I would imagine LB Aaron Curry would be the target.

That said, I doubt the Pats have any interest in paying the kind of deal the #3 pick in the draft would get.

K.C. has the 3rd pick.  Would BB value Aaron Curry or anyone else in this draft that much?  Or wan't to pay that much.  I agree w/you Pioli wouldn't wan't to give away half his draft, but this doesn't fit the Pats style either.

Re: Vrabel traded to Chiefs

I don't know.  It is completely against Belichick's MO - trading up to the top of a draft and giving huge money to a rookie.  I still think that a top 5 pick is more of a hinderance than a benefit.  But if we are going into uncapped year(s), giving alot of money to rookies isn't that big of a deal.

Re: Vrabel traded to Chiefs

I don't really agree with the whole "BB would never want to pay a top 3 pick" sentiment that exists.  I think if there's a player he likes there and he has that pick, he'll make the pick.  And I think BB would love to have Curry on this team.  I know I would.

It's still a risk if Detroit or St. Louis decide to take the best player on the board and then the Pats have to scramble to trade out of the pick.

Re: Vrabel traded to Chiefs

My suspicious Yankee mind tells me this is part of a bigger deal. RK/BB and SP had to talk before SP left about the upcoming draft and free agency. It would be stupid not to - if for no other reason than to set boundaries so everyone can stay on good terms.

Vrabel is exactly what KC needs - a veteran leader who can still walk the walk. Vrabel has his 3 rings, and has nothing to prove. It's a good move for him. Obviously SP would know the exact guy to get, so just as obviously it had to be done with RK/BB's blessing.

Now lets see what the Pats get in return, and if this is just the overture.
