It's time to crank it up a notch. If the Jets and Dolphins want the Division I say keep the pressure on by winning and make them earn it.

Per WEEI Matt Cassel's father has died, casting doubt on his playing status for Sunday.  Guessing de probably plays, but he's going to miss practice and be distracted.

Best wishes to the Cassel family.

Re: Official game 14 thread. Patriots vs. Raiders

The Raiders apparently don't plan on putting Asomugha on Moss full time.  This game could get ugly really fast.

The Tribune reports that Asomugha will play RCB as part of Oakland's standard alignment.

Good luck covering Moss when Welker runs off the coverage underneath.

The Raiders only have 5 CBs on the active roster with 4 safeties including former Patriot Rashad Baker.

If Cassel's playing there will be a LOT of 4 or 5 wide receiver sets in this game.  Even if the Raiders blitz, I think you're going to see nothing by 3 receiver packages for most of the day.

Re: Official game 14 thread. Patriots vs. Raiders

This would be a great game for the D to regain some of it's swagger. The Raiders passing game is really a mess this year so we should be able to keep them to under 10 points and hopefully get a few INT's.

Our offense is outscoring the Raiders almost 2:1 - but while they're the 30th ranked running defense they're also the 9th ranked passing defense. So even if McD wants to go 4-wide all game, the running backs could have a big day against the Raiders as well. I'm sure Jordan would love to have a 100-yard game.

Re: Official game 14 thread. Patriots vs. Raiders

I doubt you'll keep us under 10 points we'll make like 8 field goals hopefully and stop your whole offense and win 24-0

Re: Official game 14 thread. Patriots vs. Raiders

Interesting Comments from former Raider Rich Gannon on why JaMarcus Russell isn't where he needs to be.  first impression from reading this is that Russell still doesn't get it -- how to be a QB in the NFL.

A red flag goes up immediately when you have to take a former Raider's QB's criticism to heart because you know he's right.

From the Mercury News:

Raiders Coach Tom Cable saying Dec. 2 that Russell needs to embrace his role as a team leader, forgo days off during the season and work even harder than he already has.

Cable said. "Everyone else may get an off day on Tuesday, but he doesn't. He's got to find time to come in and work and study and get his hands on the early part of the plan as soon as possible and start to work."

Russell has made strides in that area, especially the past month, Cable said.

Gannon counters by saying these things should have been instilled in Russell during his rookie season.

"That's mind-boggling how, in this day and age, whether it be a coordinator or a head coach or a position coach, wouldn't demand that the guy come in on Tuesdays and do the work, or watch the film and make the preparation.

"And to make this comment a couple of weeks ago and say, 'Well, now we're going to make him learn how to be a pro.' Well, what were they doing the first year and a half that they had him?"

No wonder Russell isn't even close to Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco or the other rookie quarterbacks

Re: Official game 14 thread. Patriots vs. Raiders

Russell was an absolute stud at LSU, but so far a bust in the NFL.  I could never figure out why the Raiders threw so much money at him and made him their first pick, he just wasn't your typical NFL type QB.

He reminded me a lot of Culpepper who we watched play quite a bit down here in Central FLA.  Both the same kind of build and both had success running the ball in college.  I will be very surprised if Russell comes close to what Culpepper did before he blew out his knee.

Any idea who will be starting for the Raiders at QB this week?  I know Russell left their game against the Chargers with a bad ankle, but have not seen a status on him.

Should be an interesting game, especially since the Pat's will know the outcome of both the Jets & Phins game's before they start.

Go whichever team is playing the jets and miami. Of course that is saying the patriots do not have a brain fart and give away what should be a very winable game.

The Pats are letting them stay in the game.

Any word on what's wrong with Light? The broadcast I am watching is in Chinese and my Mandarin is a bit rusty.

It's a shoulder injury.  He left favoring his shoulder.

Don't think we'll see him again today.  Lots of players banged up leaving the game.

Re: Official game 14 thread. Patriots vs. Raiders

The Raiders look completely over matched.

The Patriots have their backups in the game.  Or is that their starters?  At this point, the Patriots have suffered so many injuries that the backups are the starters.

JaMarcus Russell is not hitting his targets consistently.

FYI for those checking in on the broadcast by CBS, Rich Gannon a long time Raider QB is calling the game.  He just mentioned the "tuck game" and said with a bit of sarcasm "I wonder if Tom Brady ever came clean about that play."

gannon is discounting the fact that Brady said after the playoffs that he thought it could have been ruled a fumble but fortunately it wasn't.

Gannon, who had a bunch of critical comments about the Raiders this week, has shown his favoritism of Oakland during the broadcast. It appears Gannon hasn't come to terms with the outcome of the Tuck game.

Credit Gannon who later said in teh broadcast that the Patriots made plays the Raiders didn't.

If you missed this week's Behind Enemy Lines, we talked about that game

uhhh, it sounded a lot like he was just making a joke. You read that about 7 layers too deep.

And he was much more critical than positive about the Raiders for the entire broadcast.

You are more than reaching here.

Re: Official game 14 thread. Patriots vs. Raiders

Congrats to the Pat's & Cassel.  If not for the gift wrapped win for the Jet's today, the Pat's would be in better shape.  Still feel the Jet's will choke next week and then do the Pat's a favor and knock off Miami the last week as the Pat's beat the Bills.

Now wouldn't that be a kick in the groin for Mangenius, win the last game of the season and help the Pat's win the division.  Still a long way to go, what a crazy season.

I never rooted for Big Ben until tonight. How does the tiebreaker work for the wildcard?

Re: Official game 14 thread. Patriots vs. Raiders

If Baltimore loses to Jacksonville, it will go to the fourth tie breaker (conference record) and the Pats will win it.

"And he was much more critical than positive about the Raiders for the entire broadcast. "

To be fair to Gannon, he called out the Raiders before this week.  When we spoke to a CBS media relations staffer about Gannon's comments there was no official position on the matter.

Still, players from the NFL have a confilct of interest to address when they do vcoverage of the team's they used to play for.  They need to do a better job of either making impartial comments, or reclusing themselves from the broadcast.

Ugg........ why should NE fans be fair to Gannon or any broadcaster for that matter? Geeze all along I thought it was former players make bad broadcasters. The "tuck" game is ancient history but, how de we explain or rationalize former Fins in the booth over the years and their comments? Or, seemingly to this day, negative comments sourrounding "spygate"?

It's unlikely media relations would criticize themselves and, my opinion is that if they (The Networks) don't care then why should the fans?  Gannon assigned to a Patriot-Raider game? WOW.............

The funny thing was when Gannon talked about the Snow Bowl...what he described is the definition of a TUCK.

Overall, its Phil Simms who outshines and out classes anybody calling sports.

Gannon has a right to hold on to his memories, and we remember it just as well.
I was sure it was a fumble then also,  but had hoped hard during the challenge that the original Oakland Pats playoff game "no calls vs. Oakland"
would be paid back to the Pats.
It was.

Im sure Madden is still crowing about the tuck call as well.
Madden who lobbied hard on the sideline and influenced the refs
to steal that playoff game in Oakland.
He was paid back as well.
