Eric on the hot seat, ...

Eric on the hot seat, ...

3. Eric Mangini

Look, I know Tom Brady is out for the season. But do we really want to make the Jets the favorite in the weekend showdown with the Patriots? New England still has the better head coach, running attack, wide receivers, defense and special teams. Obviously, Mangini's crew has the major advantage with Brett Favre over Matt Cassel at quarterback.

With all the conversation about the AFC East being wide open, the Jets' win in Miami where they showed off their brand new defense, and the Jets fans and the media being giddy about New York's playoff chances since the Favre deal, Mangini is thrust into a huge, pressure-packed spot on Sunday.

The natives will go wild if the Jets lose to Matt Cassel.

You also factor in Mangini's frosty relationship with his former mentor.

Hunter.............. Mangini  really is on the hot seat come Sunday. Look also at Farve early in the game. He'll be amped, as they say in Charger Land. The Jets home opener !

I think the pressure is all on the Jets this week. Not much is expected from the Pats without Brady according to the Media so if they lose it's like, oh well they weren't expected to win. But if Pats win especially with Favre at the helm it could set the tone for the rest of the season.

The only reason they are favorite is because of Matt  Cassel. If this team had a veteran QB coming in, they wouldnt be favorites.Even a guy like Jeff Garcia.

True.

Everyone expects the Pats to cave with Cassel at the wheel. The Jets are supposed to win and, if they don't, they will look bad. How could the Favre and the Jets not beat Matt Cassel? Yeah, grossly oversimplified, but that's how the media will twist it.

And if the Pats do what they might do - which is just come out on fire and torch the Jets like a band of rampaging Huns would - then the media will have a field day.

The spark will come form the D and ST, though. I think Cassel will do OK - but the game will turn on picking off BF and getting great field position on every kick. And those are things that losing TFB doesn't affect.

I'm not sure that's true.  The Jets are only a 1 pt favorite at home (where you are pretty much given 3 pts automatically for being a home team).

If you look at the 'experts' there's a good mix picking the Jets and a good mix picking the Pats.

For example

And if you're going to say that regular people aren't giving the Pats a chance, then...

http://sports.espn.go.com/chat...y?event_id=3627

1/3rd of folks are picking the Pats.

Oh, and I'd suggest that Mangini doesn't have to win this game at all. His hotseat is related to the season, not one game.

Re: Eric on the hot seat, ...

So let me understand this...

IF the Jets win...It only because the Pats arent expected to win without Brady...

If the Jets lose, then they are in deep doo doo for the rest of the season?

I cant tell you how many times we had to run without a starting QB, RB, Linemen ect...Its a tough situation and trust me, theres no sympathy because of an injured player...At the end of the day only the W or L is what counts...Period.  Nobody knows this better than a Jets Fan!

Now I dont wish an injury on any player, but I dont think America is crying for Brady nor should they...Part of the game.  Pats are the gatekeeprs to the SB in the AFC East...No question you guys are the Champs (For Now).  But I would challenge you and say that 1 man cant make a team win or lose...Hes one piece of the puzzle and I believe the Team the PATS truly are or APPEAR to be will be revealed this season without the mighty Brady...

Just my 2 cents...God Luck tomorrow and the rest of the season!

I personally never said the Jets would be in deep **** if they lose to the Pats. I simply said that if the Pats come away with a win it could possibly give them confidence through out the rest of the season.

I gave my personal opinion that I thought there was more pressure on the Jets to win because they were expected to win according to not all but by some NFL analyst I have listened to over the past week.

And yes, Tom Brady was a VERY big part of the Patriots success over the past several seasons and losing him is diffentaly a BIG blow to this team, though I personally think hey will do fine with Cassel as long as the rest of the team does it's job....well.

And a lot of this is also the perception of the fans ... the "heat" in the hot seat.

But look at it from an owners perspective. They spend all this money on new players. They get Brett Favre. And Mangini can only barely beat Miami and can't beat the Brady-less Pats. At some point the light bulb goes off that maybe it isn't just the players that are the cause of the L's.

And if the Pats win big (a long shot, but it's possible) then thats a huge hit on team morale too.
