Game Balls and Goats: Patriots vs Ravens (Pre 1)

You know the drill:

Patriots-Ravens: Game Balls and Goats

The New England Patriots lost to the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday night in Gillette Stadium.  The game was full of poor play, poor execution and opportunity for backups to make a name for themselves, good or bad.   Here are our game balls and goats for the preseason opener, you are welcome to share your own.

It has been a tradition here at Patriots Insider to offer up our game analysis in the form of handing out Game Balls (Good things) and Goats (Bad things) to players from the game.  Sometimes there are not enough awards to hand out (Limit 3) to players for either category, so Honorable Mentions are included.

New England Patriots 15 – Baltimore Ravens 16
Thursday, August 8, 2008 (Gillette Stadium)

GAME BALLS

Richard Seymour:  Seymour has talked about showing up in 2008 because of improved health.  The Seymour of old would occupy multiple blockers, cause havoc on opponent’s blocking schemes and hold steady in his duty even when not accumulating sacks. Seymour did all three Thursday night.  He looks like he’s getting into the swing of things, abusing the single assignment blocking schemes to cause pressure on Kyle Boller.

Jerod Mayo:  Started with the first team defense, and for good reason.  Mayo’s ability to quickly read a play, and to fill a hole against the run were illustrated on the first few possessions.  One play a short pass to the right, Mayo flew in from across the field to turn the runner back inside where help from Richard Seymour and crew snuffed out a big gain opportunity.  On another play Mayo filled the hole hitting Ray Rice so hard he knocked Rice’s helmet off.  Mayo was constantly around the ball when he wasn’t making plays himself. Though officially he only had 3 tackles, he was in on a lot more.

Shawn Crable:  A half sack, a stuffed run and an acrobatic interception.  What else do you want the guy to do in his first game as a pro?  Crable called out for getting caught inside during camp the past week when his responsibility was to man the outside.  He improved significantly, taking on bocks at the point of attack, and not getting lost in traffic.

Honorable Mention:

Kyle Boller: Although he threw an interception to Crable, Boller led all quarterbacks by completing 11 of 15 attempts for 102 yards.  His first drive shredded the Patriots first team defense resulting in the first score of the game.

Pierre Woods:  After spending much of the game on the field, Woods showed up numerous times in the right spot.  Holding firm on running plays, putting pressure on the quarterback in passing downs, Woods is well on his way to claiming a roster spot.

Lewis Sanders: Two nice pass breakups, one covering the speedy Yamon Figures on a deep post, and a special teams tackle put Sanders in the category of solid contributor. “He’s always showing up one or two plays a practice” Belichick said of Sanders earlier this week.  Indeed he is.

Heath Evans: The boy continues to “bring it.” Solid blocking performance, a nice reception in the flat to extend a drive, Evans showed up in a good way.

GOATS

Matt Cassel:  Bad luck, a bad decision and working without Randy Moss or Wes Welker put a damper on Cassel’s performance.  Cassel may have all the skills to get the job done, but his performance has to be downgraded – however unfairly that may be.

Offensive Line: There were a few culprits missing assignments: Billy Yates (Penalty and bad blocking), Nick Kaczur (getting beat around the outside), Wesley Britt (holding), a False Start, another holding penalty and general malaise in getting the team going.  Dante Scarnecchia is going to have plenty of ammunition this week at practice.

Laurence Maroney: Six carries for 6 yards?  It doesn’t matter that the line didn’t give him big holes to run through, that just isn’t getting the job done.  No wonder the team signed Jordan (19 carries for 76 yards and a TD).

Honorable Mention:
Matt Gutierrez and Kevin O’Connell: Mobile quarterbacks were necessary in this game because of the offensive line, but these QBs need to put the ball into better situations.  A lob pass by one and a bad pass by the other resulted in interceptions for each of them.

Why would you make a thread that was already created?

Someone close this trash.

Game Balls and Goats threads have been in addition to every game thread since PI started.  It's just one way they like to do things around here.

Seems to make sense

Game Balls

Woods - good game. i'm not worried about Vrabel taking his time now.

A. Thomas - nice sack. he looked pretty good out there.

Lamont Jordan - He looked good compared to maroney

Goats

Cassel - OH MY GOD!  Is that what is in store for us if Brady gets hurt?

Offensive line - they sucked.  There's not a better way to say it.  They totally sucked.  It doesn't look like they learned anything since losing to the Giants in the Superbowl

Chad Jackson - when will we just cut the guy.  he still screws up, and he's in his third year.  what a waste.

Balls... the entire Front 7.  Woods, and Thomas put very good pressure on Boller and Mayo (I konw its only one pre-season game) but he looks like the real deal.  Crable was also very very good.

We won't really know much about our secondary since they played the vanilla cushion coverage ya know.

Goats...Matt Cassell enough said.

Re: Game Balls and Goats: Patriots vs Ravens (Pre 1)

GOATS____I attended the game.  I was completely disgusted with Cassel. 3 full years in the system and he was outplayed by Goots and O'Connell!!!!.....(first game for Kevin)

I realize that Moss and Welker, plus Neal and Light weren't out there but, he stunk!

Chad Jackson. I had high hopes for this guy, physically gifted with speed and big soft hands. He seems to be missing only one thing......brains. I just don't think he gets it?????  I can't believe that he knows the playbook.  It might be time, to admit the mistake and wave goodbye!

CJ Jones?   C-ya.....Muffed punt, dropped pass and general malaize..  I don't think he'll even make the P.Squad....

Izzo- just didn't stand out on ST's.  It might be time for him to retire?

GameBalls.....

Jerod Mayo-  very impressive!  He could be the D. Rookie of the Year! Yes, that good!
Shawn Crable- big, agile, fast with good hands. Nice pick! Reminesent of McGinest.
Pierre Woods- really showed up and took advantage of all the reps with the ones. He definately could start if Vrabel can't go and provide depth in the rortation....Impressive!
Terrence Wheatley- didn't look like he was out of place out there. Physical for a smaller CB and was were he was suppossed to be and looked good doing it!
Vincent Redd- UDFA could make the team. For sure the P.S.

Ray Ventrone- WR???  He came up with a couple of catches and plays on ST's.  Nasty little guy, who'll stick his nose in there!  The kid just wants to play, anywhere...

Seymour-no sacks, etc...but, him taking up space and blockers allowed Crable and Mayo to show what they can do.

Wilfork- If he isn't the best NT, I don't know who is?

   Warren- same deal as Seymour....

Lamont Jordan- was a stud. The only stand out on offense! Look for BB to keep 5 RB's this year!

I realize this wasn't much more than a glorified practice, but the offense w/o Brady is a frightening thought!  Cassel needs to go. There has to be a back-up out there somewhere? At one point I thought maybe BB would sign Pennington.  I don't want to start the season with Cassel as the B/U!  If nothing else he should be dropped to 3 in the rotation...There's no evidence whatsoever, he can get it done if Brady goes down!  He's on the last year of his contract anyway!  Goots looked better...but O'Connell executed the best of the B/U's and it was his first game?  Sorry....the Jets got Farve, maybe we could get Simms to unretire?  Nah, not that desperate, but close.  Testaverde?
Hopefully, one of the teams with a bevy of Qb's might be available after the cutdown to 53?  Maybe Bledsoe?   Seriously!

Re: Game Balls and Goats: Patriots vs Ravens (Pre 1)

Good analysts gr, - but when Bledsoe was here, his agent let the Pats know clearly he wasn't backing up anyone, especially Brady.

Re: Game Balls and Goats: Patriots vs Ravens (Pre 1)

Yeah, the Bledsoe comment was a poor attempt at sarcaism...

There is a Simms down in Tampa!  He could be available for a late draft pick?  At least he has a pedigree.  I bet Phil would be very happy to see Chris in a Pats uni.?

Unless O'Connell or Goots has a good game in pre-season?
BB and SP better get someone else in here....Brady has been a stallwart at QB, but the guy has played hurt.  Probably in SuperBowl42...He wasn't slipping the rush laterally like usual.
Had to be that ankle...   Montana had Young later in his career. I think Brady needs a decent B/U....someone who's been on the field for more than a few pre-season snaps....

Re: Game Balls and Goats: Patriots vs Ravens (Pre 1)

A little late with the balls and goats.  Work is taking over 24/7.  Damn economy.

I was listening to Gill and Geno on the radio and only got to see maybe a quarter of football on the tube so my my B&G's are from my imagination.  therefore no bias from the tube.

The names I heard the most were Crable, Mayo, Ventrone and Lamont " what a great signing he was" Jordan.  Hornorable mention goes to Heath Evans.

My Goats go to Cassell, Cassell and the ever present Josh MCD..  I hope his play calling was strickly geared to take advantage of analyzing positional play.

gr365 mentioned Shawn Crable and Willie " I will Maul you" Mcginest in the same sentence.  Most apropo gr.  I was thinking the same thing.
