No details yet but

The Patriots had trade discussions with the Texans, Cowboys and Bills, per source.

Why did the #Texans have to trade for Ryan Mallett instead of claim him? The #Cowboys were in talks with #Patriots, too.

Did they actually see Mallett play?

4 QB's ... a week before opening day ... sounds like a plan ...

zuriberry
The Houston Texans have four QBs on their roster with Mallett. Fitzpatrick, Keenum, Savage. Could be more moves.

Only a 6th? Something seems odd would figure at least a mid rounder. 4th or even 5th

Re: Breaking: Mallet traded to Texans!

Yeah a 6th rounder. It was pretty much a give away. A 6th rounder is pretty much worth nothing now a days. Patriots waited to long to trade Mallet and it backfired.

I think we can now mark the 3rd round pick of Mallet as a bad decision.

Notable 6th round picks since 1984 in order of Playing time/impact:

1. Tom Brady
2. Max Lane
3. Nate Ebner
4. Dave Nugent

Those are the 4 best 6th round Patriots in the last 30 years.

Under BB here are the best 6/7th round picks:

Dennard
Edleman
Cassel
Banta-Cain
David Givins
Patrick Pass

I'm mad that they couldn't get a long snapper in this deal!  banghead

Re: Breaking: Mallet traded to Texans!

It was worth a flyer on Mallett in the 3rd. He looked good on-paper and other teams had their eye on him. The problem was he didn't improve in 3 years. A 6th on it's own isn't worth much, but it can be used to make deals. At least they got something. It's reported that Dallas was also in the mix.

I guess they waited too long to make the deal only because he played so crappy in 2 out of 3 pre-season games. If he'd played well, they'd have at least got a 5th out of it.

Conjecture is that they cut Aiken to hold Mallett's roster spot so they could make this deal. So hopefully Aiken is re-signed pronto.

The big story to this is that JG came into practice and kicked his ass!! Nobody saw that coming

I bet JG is sitting there today going: "Holy crap, look what I got myself into ... a month ago I'd never been to an NFL game, and now I'm Tom Brady's back-up."

Re: Breaking: Mallet traded to Texans!

They drafted Mallett with the sole intention of trading him down the road.  You should never spend a third round pick like that.  Mallett never showed anything to have any trade value and it came back to bite them.  However, I still think they didn't give him enough opportunity.  If they wanted to increase his value he should have played a LOT more in preseason games.

I am not to sure about that. I think they knew what was up with Mallet and that is why they tool JG when they did. I also think that is why the Texans were not going to give up much because O'Brein knew that Mallet was not all the press was making him out to be.

I think the time to trade Mallet was during the draft. I think NE could have got a capable back up if JG needed more work. I think they wanted Mallet to shine in the preseason so they could get more, than say a 3rd-4th round pick, but when he failed they had to settle for what they got. The took a chance and it did not work out. At the end of the day, no big deal.

HINDSIGHT ALERT!!!!

If the Pats would have just kept Hoyer, who was a great back up and used the Mallet pick on a pick of need, they could have ended up with... not a whole lot. The only players drafted after Mallet were a couple of TE in Camren and Julius Thomas and Maybe Vincent Brown. So all in all a good gamble, just didnt work out in the end.

Texans have informed QB Case Keenum of his release. He is subject to waivers. Would expect Ravens to be among those interested...

The Pats allegedly like Brady Quinn over Mallett.  Well, Quinn's available.

They just gave him away to Billy O'B.  it speaks volumes about what they think of him at this point.

My guess is that they want to pick someone up and considered cutting Mallett and instead grabbed a pick.

The mystery of the Ryan Mallett draft pick comes into focus: #Patriots get a 7th rounder that can become a 6th based on playing time.

Gut throws lazers, did then, does now.  Problem is he didn't progress, no pocket awareness, poor touch and happy feet

It did seem like they could have gotten more, after camp I think it was either a conditional 6th or nothing.

Have the signed a LS yet?

He threw lasers ... where they went was the issue.

Still no word on a LS ... BB said at the press conference that using Nink was an option.

Re: Breaking: Mallet traded to Texans!

Most of us saw this trade coming. Personally I think the Patriots were lucky to get a 6th for him. Although Mallett seemed like a nice enough guy he really wasn't that good. I said it when they drafted him and I'll say it now, this kid (Jimmy G) is Brady's replacement when the time comes.
The time has come..... Here's to the 2014 Season.

I think Jimmy G will be the transition QB from Brady to the next long time starter.

Re: Breaking: Mallet traded to Texans!

EDIT: The sixth-rounder is actually a conditional draft pick in 2016. It will be a seventh-round pick unless Mallett plays 40 percent of the snaps for Houston, in which case it would jump to a sixth.

What I'be seen of Jimmy ... his intangibles, mainly ... leads me to think he's way more than a transition QB.

So it's week 7, we are 5-1, the offense has sort of sputtered to start the season because Brady has been off. The Oline screws Brady and he gets hit hard and knocked out for 2 months. JG comes in and the offense just takes off. We beat the hell out of the Broncos and Packers and are on a 8 game winning streak but  Brady is now cleared. What does Bill do?

I agree!! I know preseason means nothing and it is really hard to gauge if a player is actually great or not because a lot of times he is not playing against all of the starters. However, the little things that JG does makes me think he is the real deal. There aren't any nerves, he took control his first snap and he has a great work ethic. Maybe I am wrong and really reaching, but I think he is our guy once TB is done

Yup this kid was drafted for a reason and Mallett was traded because after 4 years with the team he showed no improvement..

Garoppolo obviously beat out Mallett in training camp to be the Patriots' top backup quarterback. Mallett finished 14 of 26 passing (53.8 percent) for 161 yards and one touchdown. He had an 85.6 quarterback rating. Meanwhile, Garoppolo was 46 of 79 passing (58.2 percent) for 618 yards, with five touchdowns and an interception. He had a 99.0 quarterback rating. And it was obvious despite being a rookie that Garoppolo had a comfort level that Mallett just didn't show on the field. He only improved over time, something Mallett did not do.
