Wow.  Big shocker.  No idea that was coming.  Not surprised they traded for a TE, but man, I wouldn't have expected Mankins to be moved.

I'll be back when I pick my jaw up from the floor.

Ben Volin:So to be clear, Mankins will count $4m this year and $4m next year
on the #Patriots cap. The move frees up some money

I knew a trade was coming, but I expected it to be Ridley.

Patriots will receive Bucs' fourth-round pick in 2014 in additon to TE Tim Wright in exchange for G Logan Mankins.

FitzyGFY
Tim Wright went for 54/500+ yds/5 TDs last year. With Pencil Neck Glennon at QB. Give him TFB? Sky could be the limit. #Patriots

@BenVolin Post June 1 so just this year proration will count. They should save $6.25M next year. Balance of $4M paid next year on cap

Wait...Tim Wright, the TE the Pats got for Logan Mankins, went to Rutgers? GTFOH! #Patriots

And I agree, MV, whatever mystical method BB has for knowing when "it's time" must have triggered on Mankins. Maybe it was being hurt every season. Maybe it was playing poorly in the clutch. Who knows. BB does some pretty wild things and they tend to work out more often than not.

the Hernandez replacement.  Back to a two headed TE gamplan. I'll bet it works out well

Have to admit I'm surprised - but shouldn't be. BB has run this play before. - Unfortunately for Mankins his chance at another ring disappeared and his career  just took one huge hit.

Lovie said he could have done better, but he was their #1 receiving TE and #2 receiver overall last year by far.

That's right MV he's as close to Hernandez as there is.

No idea what they are going to do about the OL though.

agreed, almost everytime he is right.  I think the only one I would still question is Richard Seymour just because he was such a class guy and I think he had alot left in the tank in the BB system.  But BB has a great track record for knowing when to "sell" on a player when the stock starts to drop

Re: Mankins traded

Seymour held out of camp every time his contract was up for renewal. Everyone in the FO that was coming the next season, and he wasn't the same player he was a few years before. I think in Seymour's case BB/RK knew the battle over money wouldn't be worth the return on investment, so may as well make a deal while he's got value.

Trading G Logan Mankins creates $5.755M for Patriots in cap space this year. Mankins will count $4M on the Patriots' 2015 cap.

Lovie Smith is now HC in TB there so at least Mankins has got a good coach to play for.

Brady must be shocked too.

On 98.5 Felger is speculating that Mankins was due too much($6M) and would have been dropped regardless.

Connolly is still around, but might slip into C.

Pats being Pats to get some value and be a viable contender for more years to come.
I do feel the Brady years tick tockin..
I Hope we get our 4th Championship with moves like this and being on the doorstep of another.

Re: Mankins traded

Lets Hope BB has something up his sleeve because without Mankins, Solder kinda sucks.  Now we have our future first ballot hall of famer getting smacked around all year long.  Its been the Pats Achilles Heal  for years.    If they can keep Brady upright they have a chance to win.  The fact is, now he will be kissing astro turf all season.

Big cap hit or not, Mankins was to the Oline what Wilfork is to the Dline.  If Big Vinny is worth it why not Logan?   Bad move on BB's part

I wish for the old days when football was more about winning games than it was the bottom line in the team owners pocket.

Pats now only have 4 guys over the age of 30
on the team. We have to be the youngest team in the
NFL or close to it

Re: Mankins traded

More on Tim Wright from the Globe.

And some more from his nfldraftcout page:

12/23/13 - TE Tim Wright has 49 receptions, the fifth-most by a tight end in franchise history.
12/18/13 - TE Tim Wright has 45 receptions, tied for the most of any rookie tight end this season. He has four touchdowns, which ranks second among rookie tight ends.
11/25/13 - TE Tim Wright is becoming a matchup problem for teams. The converted Rutgers receiver had a career-best eight catches Sunday. He has 34 catches for 366 yards and two touchdowns this season, ranking only behind Vincent Jackson on the team in receiving.
11/06/13 - --TE Tim Wright began the season fourth on the Bucs' depth chart. But Wright has 23 catches for 253 yards and two touchdowns.
10/16/13 - TE Tim Wright, who had a career-high 91 yards receiving against the Eagles, figures to be more involved in the passing game. Instead of a slot receiver, the Bucs may use Wright on third down.

I dunno a lot of people think they are very deep in G.  Granted Mankins was the best of the bunch. Connolly and Cannon are solid.  I'm more worried about C. Maybe Stork will finally play.

Mankins was slowing down. Like Howe said
"He allowed 10 sacks last year after only allowing
9 the previous 3 years combined"

People freaked out when Seymour left(me included)
and how did that work out?

Re: Mankins traded

Ever since the rookie wage restructuring, BB has shifted his roster-building approach. He now uses his early picks and is more willing to take chances on younger players.

I'm still kind of shocked by this.

Wright did very well in his rookie year in TB, so he could be the TE/WR hybrid kind of player that they lost when You-know-who defecated on the sleeping apparatus. They were desperately thin at TE.

There has to be things we don't know here. Either about how he was playing, or his knees, or how he got on with the new OL coach, or something.

@NEPD_Loyko: From week 8 on Logan Mankins gave
up 9 sacks. His decline as a pass blocker outweighed his ability as a run blocker in the #Patriots mind.

If I am correct we now have around 13.5 million
In cap space after trading Mankins and deferring
part of the cap hit

Re: Mankins traded

Due to high amount of drops and blocking issues, Bucs drafted Jenkins with a high pick. Also, Wright was having such a poor camp there was thoughts he was a long shot to make the team.

There has to be another move coming with the extra cap space, there has to be because this trade in no way make the Patriots better, but it does make them worse.

Re: Mankins traded

But Wright put up good numbers for Schiano. So there may be more to his decline than just him.

Also note that Wright is about the same size as LaFell - only an inch taller and 10# heavier. So if the plan is to drop LaFell when Tyms comes off suspension, this move makes it easier.

Still think they could have gotten more then a 4th rounder.
