Re: Pats - Carolina ...

He usually gets serious snaps in the 3rd game.

KT is looking good.

OL is struggling.

Gray is looking solid.

D is really doing some damage - Revis Island is nice to have.

I like that comment on the penalty on Amendola ... "What was that call for" ... "Blocking too well."

Friggin' Develin  loves destroying guys on run-blocking. Just brutal.

Looks like they're adapting to the "no TE offense" just fine.

LaFell has had too many drops. Lets see what Tyms can do.

WR Josh Boyce, the 2013 fourth-round from Texas Christian, has not played an offensive snap tonight.

Is Jerod Mayo becoming injury prone? With BB indicating his absence has been injury related.......idk, I love him as a player but just seems like hes always banged up. He usually finds away to play but he's also missed several games over the last few years.

I was pulling for Boyce too. But Tyms has made the plays and Boyce hasn't.

Who the frig is McCuller? Oh. A rookie LB playing TE. Of course.

How did butler look in man coverage? Is it likely he will make the team?

Re: Pats - Carolina ...

Butler did OK. He's always in position. He got beat on one play reaching in for an INT. Give him a little more experience and he'll either bat the pass or get the pick.

I really like what I see from Gray. He could be the short-yardage/clock-killer they need.

This kid McCuller is interesting. He's a LB, plays on ST, but BB had him also playing FB since they picked him up as a un-drafted rookie. His bio said he also lettered in track, so he's got speed for a big guy. Could be another of those guys BB likes to have who can contribute in all 3 phases of the game. He had 3 catches and a TD ... not bad for a LB. I really dig how BB finds these guys.

I know BB/TB keep saying LaFell is doing well, but Tyms makes more plays and doesn't have the drops. I have a feeling that when Tyms' suspension is up either Boyce or LaFell are gone.

TB clearly has confidence in KT - even after a drop he goes right back to him, and KT makes the play. So KT makes the squad.

Ninkovich is on fire already.

Gonna be an interesting season.

Re: Pats - Carolina ...

I hope they have room for Gray he could certainly be used when they need a bull. Whites looked better. Finch was barely seen last night

Both LaFell and Thompkins had drops and good catches.

Dennard played some and looked good.  Browner was in late and got burned.  If he can't be physical his coverage skills may be problematic.  Maybe they should consider him at S.  Butler was on and off last night.

Just an awesome kick. Maybe BB won't hesitate to use him in the SB now?

Cam Newton is hurting today after the Jamie Collins hit. Collins had the green dot on last night and did a great job directing the defense!!

Props to rookie Kelvin Benjamin, he beat Revis twice and Butler. He is physical as hell and no one has  contained him really this pre season

I wouldn't say he beat Revis on the throw right at the line.

Re: Pats - Carolina ...

With all the talk about how great Blake Bortles has looked thus far, Jimmy G has been better!

Jimmy G:  24-37, 334 yards, 4 TD's

Bortles: 28-44,  435 yards, 1 TD

They've both been way better than Manziel.  Jimmy has studied hard, worked hard and kept a low profile.  Pretty much the opposite of Ryan Leaf Jr. How soon before ESPN stops licking his nuts?

Re: Pats - Carolina ...

Via Erik Frenz of the Globe.  that's kind of see how this will go unless Browner gets switched to S:

— Press box discussion between colleague Zuri Berry and me: Patrick Chung seemed to play more often in running situations and on first and second down, while Duron Harmon came in on third down. This makes perfect sense, given that Chung's strength is in run defense while Harmon's strength is as a read-and-react defender against the pass. Harmon is much better at defending deep passes, with better first-step quickness and closing speed than Chung, while Chung is a better run defender and always seems to be a step behind in coverage.

also noted that Bolden did not play, which isn't good, they liked Butler's play and WR quartet of Edelman, Amandola, LaFell and Thompkins were Brady's favorite targets.

Re: Pats - Carolina ... Post Rating (1 vote)

.  I've seen enough of Garoppolo at this point to believe that he can handle the backup QB spot well, and has more upside than Mallet.  I see no reason to keep 3 QBs on the roster (they could move Mallet to the practice squad in case of an emergency).  Better to add depth somewhere else on their roster, where it will be needed and called upon.

. The game looked good for the Pats, but there are still some warning signs here.  Almost all of Brady's passing production was just to his crutch (J. Edelman - 8-for-8), and to running back Vereen (5 catches).   KT had an ugly drop of an easy pass right into his jersey numbers, and just 2 catches overall. Generally speaking, he couldn't get open. LaFell was also very inconsistent. And their highest paid receiver, D Amendola, always seems to have the lowest impact (just 1 catch, and he rarely gets open).  So there is your so-called "depth chart"  on receivers:  No:  2/3/4 are all basically just not good, or not big contributors, or reliable players.  This won't be a problem during the regular season, but when the Playoffs come.....a team like Seattle can just shut down Edleman and eat him up alive.....and then what?  We don't know if any other WR can emerge as another super reliable guy by that time.   The fact that Boyce didn't play, is probably good news for Brian Tyms.  He's still a little raw, but I like his upside as an X receiver more than either KT or Fells.  That may (eventually) be "the guy" here.

. The Patriots D is shaping up as we expected.  Good secondary play (Revis), allowed Chandler Jones the time to finish off and make a couple of sacks. I think this D will be able to hold some (less strong) teams to 10 points or less (something we haven't seen here in years).

.  The Patriots OLine is still inconsistent, and a work in progress.   A lot of strange people are playing TE too (LB Taylor McCuller, etc.).  I'm unsure if this group is really improved over the previous year or not just yet.

Re: Pats - Carolina ...

No way Mallett clears waivers and gets to the PS. But I agree that Jimmy has shown more progress in 3 weeks than Mallett has in 3 years. Mallett at least doesn't look as bad as he did 2 weeks ago.

KT's big drop was a mental error - let the ball get to his body - too easy a catch - it happens. KT fights for the catch usually and Brady likes him out there.

I'm more worried about LaFell - I'm just not seeing it. Tyms is a rookie and has more impact - Tyms and Dobson out there as bookends would be tough to cover. They'd stretch the field in ways that the Pats haven't done since Moss.

I think they've been limiting Amendola's reps in pre-season for the obvious reason. The word from camp is he looked awesome.

I'm stoked about what this D could be capable of this year. Still thin at LB, but BB will sort it out.

It's gonna take half a season to integrate all these new rookie OL guys.

BB had Taylor McCuller playing TE and FB from the start of camp. I think it was planned that way when they signed him, he's been in the meeting rooms for all 3 positions. I'm betting he makes the PS as just being able to absorb that much playbook and execute it pretty impressive for a rookie.

Re: Pats - Carolina ...

Mallet's all done this year (contract year) - he'll be traded before anything else. - There's ALWAYS a team that will pick up a Pats back-up ... Only question is what the trade will be.

I have my reservations when it comes to kenbrell thompkins. He likely will make the team. The question with him is can he separate from corners on a consistent basis. We need those type of playmakers on the outside. Our offense has become predictable at times.
