Rodney Harrison - on McCourty, it's time, ....

Rodney Harrison says 'Devin McCourty has to step up and be that leader' in Patriots' secondary

Ever since Rodney Harrison retired in 2009, the New England Patriots have lacked leadership and toughness in their secondary, the two traits to best describe the former safety, and he believes Devin McCourty has to step up and be that guy.
.

During the off-season, the team went all in at the cornerback position, adding Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner, but didn't do much at the safety spot, leaving McCourty as the quarterback of the defense.
.

"Devin McCourty has to step up and be that leader," Harrison said, via Jarrett Bell of USA Today Sports.

"I know it's his contract year. - But instead of worrying about money, - he has to take over that secondary.
.

"Cornerbacks are relegated to one side of the field. The safety sees the entire field. Devin McCourty, I expect to come out and say, 'Hey, you guys are new, I know everybody's excited about you, but…this is my secondary. You guys have come here and I'm going to get everybody lined up and we're going to get it done.' "
.

"I'm an older guy who's been here," McCourty said. "This is now my fifth year. Revis and Browner, it's their first year here. Logan (Ryan), it's his second year. Duron (Harmon), second year. Tavon (Wilson), third year. So I'm that guy who's been here for a while. I do feel that leadership role. - I've been a captain before. - If I can make sure everybody is on the same page, we have a shot to be a very good secondary here. - This is a perfect year to go out and do it. - I don't make a big deal of it. - To me, it's just in my job description

Rodney was new and lead right off the bat. You got it or you don't. The reaction from teammates to your dedication and clutch play on the field makes you a season long leader.

Just be who you are Devin and hopefully the great play of others will allow you to be even more productive. I think he see's the field well and is great in run support but lacks finishing pass plays too much to be a highly respected leader yet...  Who knows.. His play is underrated by many fans imo.

McCourty is the leader of that secondary - he always speaks for them and takes the heat when things don't go well. He's just got a quiet style.

I agree with Harrison says. But I still think at the end of the day, McCourty will not be back with the Patriots. This will be his last season.
