Patriots-Lions preseason game 3

Patriots-Lions preseason game 3

I am really curious to see how much Brady plays. Suh and Fairley are dirty as they come, and I don't wanna risk a Brady injury(The OL has some question marks right now).  Mankins also has a history with Suh, so should be interesting

Things I wanna see:

How long will Mallet/ Tebow play: If Bill is serious about Tebow "improving" and is having him do new things, let him do it in practice.  I am confident with our inside and short passing game, lets get some work for the outside guys. Would love to see Mallet air it out a few times deep.

Camp battles: By my estimates we currently have 89 guys on the roster, by next Tuesday at 4 it needs to be down to 75. I don't think we will see any major cuts after tomorrows game(Bolden, Wilson, etc) but a lot of deep roster guys could be cut

Edelman: Brady has only played 4 snaps with Julian in the preseason. Amendola will probably not play(not sure why) so JE is gonna get some much needed work

Mccourty: He shed the red contact uniform this week, gonna be nice to see him come in and get some work with a group that has had a bad camp

Logan Ryan: Was awful the first week but made a few plays against Tampa. He played the most snaps of any Patriot last week. Could Bill be getting him reps in preparation of a Dennard suspension?

Possible FA signings:A few decent CB's have been cut this week, with 10 Million in cap space the Pats could make a move if the secondary looks bad. Same with the DT position, no word on Armstead and we are pretty light at the position. BB will probably see how the unit plays and decide if we may need to add depth

QB pressure: Yeah it is preseason but I want to see if the unit can get pressure against the Lions like last week. Was last weeks play for real or was the QB pressure a result of starters Nicks and Joseph absent? Stafford is a better QB than Freeman and will probably play the first 2 quarters

Talib: Calvin Johnson will play but not many snaps per coach Schwartz. There is not one person on the planet who can cover Megatron alone, so this should be a good challenge for him

Wanna see??? - A consistently good pass rush, ... sacks are "nice" - but aren't really necessary to break up a play.

One of the big battles is for the last 1 or 2 RB spots as well. Bolden, Blount and Develin are all trying to make it.

Re: Patriots-Lions preseason game 3

I don't expect to see Tebow much against DET. if he's still on the team in a week, he'll probably play half the last PS game.

I expect BB to dial up the D as well for this game to get an idea of just how far along his guys really are. He was mixing everything from 5-2 to 3-4 last week, so I expect that to continue and guys like Fletcher (who needs the reps to get back into the flow) to see more action.

I think Amendola got dinged against TB. So they're holding him out of practice to be safe. No one in Foxboro seems concerned, so it's probably a routine injury and he and TB seem to be clicking just fine. Edelman could use a few more reps.

The secondary play will be something to really watch. McC coming back and the new guys starting to catch on. BB will probably dial up the complexity for them as well to see who can handle the heat. So corner and safety blitzes should be in evidence.

Speaking of roster cuts, here's ESPN's projection for the final roster.

Interestingly, they both see James Develin sticking instead of Hooman. If so, that means the run game is going to be a bigger part of the O than we thought.

Re: Patriots-Lions preseason game 3

I usually like and agree with most of what Mike Reiss puts out but keeping Tebow is not one of them.

Whats the upside to keeping  Tebow.  Really none.

Whats the upside of keeping Hooman.  It gives you that third Tight End until the Gronk shows up.

I got to say.  Keeping Tebow seems like a wasted roster spot.

Re: Patriots-Lions preseason game 3

I'll be looking to see if Leon Washington is used much on "O" and if he will be returning more kickoffs this game. Vareen is playing a high risk injury role and with his importance to the "O" It would be nice to see what LW has left in the tank in some preseason action.

We were something like last (30th I think)..lol... in kickoff returns last year and Leon Washington's Seagull's team was second last year so there should be some improvement we hope.

Bill Belichick was asked about Washington. The Patriots’ coach has been happy with Washington, even if they opportunities so far have been scarce.“He hasn’t gotten a lot of opportunities but I think he’s done everything we’ve asked him to do,” Belichick said. “He’s been healthy, he’s been out there every day, he’s worked hard, he’s got a great attitude, he’s got great leadership for our team and for the running back group. I think he’s shown up positively in the return game even though he hasn’t really had a lot of opportunity. But we still have two more games here; we’ll see how it goes.

Re: Patriots-Lions preseason game 3

Just watching the few returns he did get it looks like he still has a motor. Seems to kind of glide until he sees a lane, and then accelerates. I don't want Vereen or Edelman getting hurt on KR/PR ... Washington seems pretty durable, played 16 games in 6 out of 7 seasons. The rest of the RB's have all said he's the veteran leader of the bunch now, so I'll be really surprised if he gets cut.

Re: Patriots-Lions preseason game 3

Me2...He would be a surprise cut that means BB feels secure in his scoring attack without him.

You guys stole all the good stuff so I'll also be looking to see if our receivers get separation and Brady doesn't have to be so perfect. You don't have to be physical to get separation, good timing and body movement on your cut can twist the DB's hips and gives you a quick advantage. A skill Troy Brown, Wes Welker, used on their routes here. If these tall receivers can go on button hook type routes at different depths and create that quick window of space for Brady this offense could be incredible. They would have the ability to open the run with the pass and the pass with the run hopefully.
Slant routes are great but they can get you killed quickly and need to be run at a precise depth while adjusting your speed so Brady can release the ball when he wants to.

David Givens was good at the find space exploit DB route.
I hope to see Josh incorporate some of that "O" for our young ones.

Re: Patriots-Lions preseason game 3

So now NE doesn't even make the playoffs? LOL

Almost as bad as Mike Silver's SB pick, Seattle beating the Bengals

At one point did the Bengals mediocre QB with one true receiving threat along with an average RB and coach become a SB or deep playoff threat?

The 'Phins beating the Pats out of the playoffs is bad enough ... but the 2-14 Chiefs making it?

3-0 Lions. So Fairley has already got an illegal hands to the face on Mankins and a 15 yard dirty hit in the back. Can't stand him and Suh
