Pats not about to put a 11.4 mil tag on Welker, ...

Report: Patriots will not franchise Wes Welker a second time

Found 9 hours ago on 60 Max Power O: Yardbarker Blogger Network
They put the franchise tag on receiver Wes Welker last season, earning him a cool $9.5 million for the year, but this time around, according to a source familiar with the team, who told the Boston Herald's Ron Borgess that they "are simply not going to put an $11.4 million franchise tag" on him. ... Which is what we all have expected anyway, but this may be yet another indication that it's either agree to what the Patriots are offering, or it's time to embark on the free agency meeting tour for the 31-year-old Welker. As NFL.com Mark Sessler noted, ' Players who carried contract demands to the brink in New England -- Richard Seymour, Asante Samuel, Vince Wilfork and Logan Mankins, for example -- were among those awarded open-market value by the team. ' Welker balked at what the Patriots had on the table for him in 2011, a fully guaranteed two-year, $16 million deal, and now that offer now is long gone. He's going to have to bend in order to stay wi...

Not surprising.11 million is alot for that one year.I think they will use it on Talib or Volmer. Is Welker looking for a 4 year deal?

This could mean anything or nothing. I'd be amazed if they just let WW walk and get nothing for him - he's worth at least a couple of top-100 draft picks.

I'd hate to see him go, but except for Edelman they don't have a WR under 30 years old. And Edelman isn't a pure WR to begin with. So it's clear that change has to come.

I would hate to see it but, I think he walks on the advise of  ?? Perhaps his agent. But then again, Mr. QB AND the system is what made him. So...they make another one.
Will be interesting to see what Talib(sp) wants.

I trust the pats will have a backup plan if he leaves.I thought this team gave him a fair offer.I wish Brady would restructure again.Time is running out on him to win another ring.

My money is that he signs a 3 year deal with Denver.

Teams that will want to pay him big bucks are the sucker organizations like the Raiders, Bills who really go for the hype and not what he can actually do for their specific offense. Will he want that?

It's such an unusual situation because his stats are phenomenal but his market value is simply "very good". I don't know of any good fits (great QB situations) that could pay him more.

Hadn't considered Denver but, yeah, that'd make sense. Elway is desperate for a title and Manning is good enough to maintain Welker's effectiveness.

Looks like the Bengals and Colts have CAP room - not great QB's, but good QB's on the rise and playoff contenders.

If he goes to Denver-he`ll catch 200 balls.

I think the Pats will tag him and come to an agreement.

Honestly I'm kind of over Welker.  I'm seeing a lot of fans say they want the Pats to just rebuild the WR roster with good young free agents and draft picks, and I find myself falling in with that group.  Add some young talent on the outside to Gronk and Hern and you won't be so dependent on Welker.  His hands are getting worse each year anyway.  Now I'm not saying I don't want him on the team.  If they can reach an agreement now that Brady has given them some cap room, then great.  But I won't be crushed if he leaves.. as long as they get some good replacements in.  And there are some good WR's in this draft, and I think even in FA although I haven't really looked that up.

If they could trade Welker for a 2nd and 3rd this year, I'd be tempted.

Yeah that would be tempting, but they'd have to franchise him and get him to sign it before they can trade him.

Damn. You're right - forgot about that.

Either they have a deal in the works, or they figure he won't find the money he wants elsewhere, or they already have his replacement in mind.

First shoe is the Brady extension.  He's coming back and not for outragous bucks, but he's Brady's binky.

They can rebuild by dumping Lloyd, Branch and other flotasm. They need someone who actually stretches the field to go with Welker and the TEs.

If there's a better supporting cast so WW doesn't need a bazillion catches, then odds are his number of drops will go down. He takes a hell of a beating every game. So as long as they fill the other 2 WR spots with guys who can get it done, then definitely keep Wes.

I thought Titus Young was with the rams but they let him go.I know he can be a cancer to a team but 24 years old.Maybe he can excel in this system. If he acts up then cut him.Nothing to lose.BB has had alot of these guys before.

The Rams desperately need WR's yet they cut him after only about a week.  That's not good.  There are plenty of other options out there.  I'd look elsewhere if I'm the Pats.

Pats did not like him pre draft, I was told he fell off their list early.

Not sure he's done anything to improve that situation since.  By the sounds of it, no way.

Kid needs a maturity check.   May never 'get it.'

If you're going to spend money, better to spend it on a chance for Welker next couple years and lose him to diminished skills creating dead money if released than to  sign a guy like Young and throw away money on a signing bonus like they did with Jonathan Fanane this past season $2.56 million in dead money.

I'm seeing reports through the feeds that the Pats and Welker have begun talking about a contract. No indication of how close they are to finalizing, probably not very, but at least they're talking.

I was hearing and reading some things yesterday about them talking with Welker about a long term deal, like 4 or 5 years.  I'm not sure if I should believe that.  Why would they be willing to offer him a deal that long when they weren't even willing to go three years a year ago?  Confusing.  Unless they are trying to do that so they can throw a bunch o money that he'll never see at the back end of it.

Weren't the Pats offering him 2 years for 16 million last year?  Looks like he should have taken that.
